In a laboratory test on spruce wood, a mixture of 90% suberinic acids and 10% polyphenols absorbed 100 g/m2 of water after 72 hours and outperformed an alkyd emulsion in that test. The result is promising, but it does not establish outdoor service life, decay protection, certification or a product you can buy.
What the bark-based coating is
The formulation pairs two kinds of compounds recovered from tree bark. Suberinic acids, taken from birch outer bark, are wax-like and water-insoluble. Polyphenols from spruce bark are more compatible with water and can help stabilize those acids in a waterborne suspension.

The idea draws on bark’s role as a natural barrier, but the coating is a designed material rather than a simple layer of ground bark. In the reported process, the researchers used solvent exchange to form a dispersion, applied it to wood and thermally cured it. The resulting coating is described as fully bio-based and waterborne. Wang and colleagues’ 2024 study reports the formulation and experiments.

Suberinic acids provide the water-repellent component
Suberinic acids are hydrophobic, but their viscous, wax-like character and insolubility in water make them difficult to spread evenly on their own. A waterborne coating needs a way to disperse these compounds so they can cover the wood surface.

Polyphenols help form the dispersion and cured film
Spruce-bark polyphenols help stabilize the suberinic acids as hybrid particles in water. During thermal curing, the polyphenols become embedded in the coating network and act as nanofillers. Their proportion can be varied to adjust mechanical and other properties. The polyphenols themselves are complex mixtures that include lignin and tannins, and can be brittle, so their role is not simply to add a second protective layer.
What the 72-hour water test found
For the highlighted formulation—90% suberinic acids and 10% polyphenols—the study reports water absorption of 100 g/m2 after 72 hours on spruce wood. The authors say this result was better than that of an alkyd emulsion in the reported exposure test. It is a result for that formulation, substrate and test duration, not a general performance rating for bark-based finishes.

The study’s figure of 23 million metric tonnes of bark produced annually in the European Union is also an estimate quoted by the 2024 article, which cites an underlying source. It should not be treated as an independently verified current production figure.

A 72-hour water-absorption measurement can help compare coatings under a stated laboratory exposure. It cannot by itself show how a finish will perform through years of rain, sun, temperature changes or wet-and-dry cycles. The reported study does not establish long-term outdoor weathering, UV performance, fungal or insect resistance, field service life, product certification or commercial availability.

Those are separate tests and practical questions. For context, a 2024 USDA Forest Products Laboratory review of natural wood protectants notes that wood-extractive composition, distribution and efficacy vary, and that natural durability mechanisms are not fully understood. That review covers wood extractives broadly; it is not an evaluation of this particular coating.
Is it available as a timber finish?
The cited sources do not identify a marketed product or verified retail supplier for this exact formulation. The work describes an experimental material and process, not a consumer-ready finish or a DIY recipe. In particular, calling the waterborne suspension easy or safe to apply in a research context is not a consumer safety endorsement. The formulation includes solvent exchange and thermal curing, and the available evidence does not provide consumer application instructions or establish safe use outside the research process.

How to assess future bark-based coating claims
If a commercial or later-stage coating is presented as based on this research, look for evidence beyond a short water-absorption test. Useful questions include:
- What wood species and coating formulation were tested, and how much water did the wood absorb under a stated exposure duration?
- Was adhesion and film integrity measured, and what thermal curing conditions were used?
- Were outdoor weathering and UV exposure tested over a stated period?
- Were fungal or insect protection claims tested directly?
- Are the bark ingredients consistently sourced and formulated at production scale?
- Is there a named product, certification and documented route to purchase?
These measures address different performance claims; one water-resistance result cannot substitute for the others.
