Gold catalysts can help produce hydrogen, but there is no single “gold catalyst” process. Research has tested gold nanoclusters in light-driven assemblies, gold co-catalysts on titanium dioxide, gold catalysts in the water–gas shift reaction, and gold nanoparticle composites in hydrogen-evolution tests. Each route uses different materials and reaction conditions, so their results cannot be treated as one technology or compared without context.
Why gold can be part of a hydrogen catalyst
Gold is not automatically an effective hydrogen catalyst simply because it is a noble metal. Its behavior depends on the form of the gold, the material supporting it, the surrounding molecules, and the reaction being driven. A 2024 review notes that how hydrogen activates and reacts on gold is still not fully understood. Researchers investigate ways to tune gold particle size and examine gold cations and gold–ligand interfaces, among other approaches. The review in Nature Reviews Chemistry therefore supports a qualified conclusion: catalyst architecture matters, but no single mechanism or performance claim applies to all gold-based systems.

What different gold-based hydrogen routes do
Gold nanoclusters assembled with polydopamine
Bera and co-authors reported a light-driven photocatalyst called AuSCs@PDA, made by assembling gold superclusters with polydopamine through in-situ dopamine polymerization. The gold superclusters were approximately 100 nm before polymerization, rather than the approximately 2 nm ultra-small gold nanoclusters used in some comparisons. The resulting nanodisk-like structures contained uniformly embedded clusters.

The authors describe the thin polydopamine layers between adjacent gold clusters as electron-transport pathways: excited electrons move toward the surface, where they can contribute to hydrogen evolution, while recombination is reduced. In the study’s comparisons, AuSCs@PDA also showed higher photocurrent density, better photostability, and lower charge-transfer resistance than PDA nanoparticles, gold superclusters, and gold nanoclusters assembled with polydopamine. Its highest reported hydrogen evolution rate was 3.20 mmol g−1 h−1. This is a laboratory result for the tested photocatalyst, not a commercial production rate. Bera et al., Small, first published 19 November 2024.
Gold-based co-catalysts on titanium dioxide
Agrelo-Lestón and co-authors studied thiocoumarin-based gold(I) complexes and gold(0) systems supported on P90 titanium dioxide (TiO2). Their experiment used UV–visible light to drive ethanol photodehydrogenation in a gas-phase setup. This produces hydrogen from an ethanol-based process; it is not overall water splitting.
At equal gold loading of 0.25 wt%, AuL1a/TiO2 reached 2.7 times and AuL1NPs/TiO2 2.6 times the hydrogen production rate of the study’s conventional Au-0.25/TiO2 reference. These are within-study ratios, not a direct comparison with the 3.20 mmol g−1 h−1 result above. The study found that ligand choice, the arrangement of gold and coumarin, and the distance between them affected performance. It also reported that the Au(I)-based AuL1a system formed approximately 3 nm gold nanoparticles during reaction, and discussed plasmonic gold species as a possible contributor to improved light absorption. Gold–titania catalysts in the water–gas shift reaction
A separate study examined ceria-doped Au/TiO2 catalysts for hydrogen production through the water–gas shift reaction. It considered ceria loading and the preparation method. This is chemically distinct from light-driven ethanol photodehydrogenation or water-splitting systems. The available article information establishes the study’s subject, but not enough detail to give a reliable activity ranking. The study’s abstract and publication information.

A 2024 study deposited gold nanoparticles on mesoporous carbon and evaluated the material for the hydrogen evolution reaction while varying sodium borohydride concentration, pH, and temperature. It reported an activation energy of 30.0 kJ mol−1 under its experimental conditions. Activation energy describes a reaction’s temperature dependence; it is not a hydrogen production rate and should not be compared with rates or relative improvements reported for the photocatalysts above. The 2024 Molecules study.

How to compare claims about gold catalysts
A headline rate is meaningful only alongside the experiment that produced it. When reading a paper or comparing two claims, check these details:
- Gold form and architecture: for example, clusters, nanoparticles, a gold(I) complex, or a gold–ligand interface.
- Support: the material holding or interacting with the gold, such as polydopamine, TiO2, or mesoporous carbon.
- Reaction and feedstock: identify whether the experiment uses water splitting, ethanol photodehydrogenation, the water–gas shift reaction, or another hydrogen-evolution test.
- Operating conditions: note illumination, temperature, pH, reactant concentrations, and whether the setup is gas-phase or uses another configuration.
- Loading and comparison baseline: a relative improvement applies only to its stated reference and loading. For instance, the 2.7-times and 2.6-times TiO2 results were measured against a conventional Au/TiO2 reference at equal 0.25 wt% gold loading.
- Metric and units: a rate normalized per gram of catalyst is not interchangeable with a percentage or multiple relative to a study-specific control. An activation energy is a different kind of measurement altogether.
What laboratory results do—and do not—establish
The reported figures show that particular gold-containing materials performed under particular laboratory conditions. They do not establish a common production rate across gold catalysts, prove that the reactions can be deployed commercially, or provide an industry-wide measure of hydrogen output or emissions. In discussing photocatalytic hydrogen, the Advanced Science authors note a substantial gap between laboratory research and industry and describe the field as being at low technology readiness levels. A laboratory improvement over a control is evidence about that experiment, not proof of commercial-scale performance.
