A real randomized trial found that blocking mobile internet on smartphones for two weeks was associated with better subjective well-being, mental-health measures and sustained attention. The phones were not confiscated: calls and SMS remained available, and participants could use the internet on computers and other devices. The result suggests that constant mobile connectivity may displace beneficial offline activities, but it does not prove that smartphones are universally harmful or that everyone will experience a dramatic change.
The study, published in PNAS Nexus on February 18, 2025, included 467 participants. Its headline-grabbing findings need to be read alongside low adherence, a short follow-up and a sample recruited through an online labor platform.
What the study actually blocked
The intervention blocked internet access on participants’ iPhones, including both Wi-Fi and cellular data. Calls and SMS texting continued to work, while laptops, tablets and desktop computers could still connect to the internet. In practical terms, the smartphone functioned more like a basic phone for online access; this was not a complete technology fast, a ban on all screens or a deletion of social-media accounts.
Participants installed the Freedom app, the same tool used to enforce the block in the trial. The peer-reviewed methods are available from PNAS Nexus.

How researchers tested the idea
Randomized, delayed-intervention design
The month-long, preregistered experiment measured participants at baseline, after two weeks and after four weeks. One group blocked mobile internet during the first two weeks; a delayed group initially served as the comparison and received the block during the second two weeks. This let researchers compare changes during blocked and unblocked periods and examine what happened after access returned.
Participants were recruited through Prolific. Of the 467 people retained for analysis, 327 completed the first two surveys and 313 completed all three. The study and its preregistration are linked from the article at OSF.
What was measured
- Subjective well-being: life satisfaction, positive affect and negative affect.
- Mental health: symptoms of depression, anxiety and related psychological distress.
- Sustained attention: self-reported attentional awareness plus an objective gradual-onset continuous performance task (gradCPT). In that task, participants responded to city images and withheld responses to mountain images; performance was summarized with the signal-detection measure d-prime.
What changed after mobile internet was blocked?
| Outcome | Finding |
|---|---|
| Subjective well-being | Improved during the intervention. In the initial phase, the composite mean rose from 4.65 to 5.05; the reported mood effect was about d = 0.33. |
| Mental health | Improved in both groups when they received the intervention; the delayed group’s reported effect was about d = 0.52. |
| Objective sustained attention | Improved on the gradCPT; the delayed group’s reported effect was about d = 0.28. |
| Participants improving on at least one main outcome | 91% improved on at least one of well-being, mental health or attention—not necessarily all three. |
| Strict compliance | 119 participants, or 25.5% of those who initially agreed to the intervention, met the preregistered threshold. |
The well-being and mental-health gains appeared to persist for at least part of the two-week period after mobile internet access returned. Attention persistence was more modest. The authors’ abstract and publication record are available through PubMed, with full text at PMC.
What “ten years younger” means
Study summaries compared the attention improvement with the age-related difference expected over roughly ten years. That is a statistical comparison based on the relationship between age and task performance. It does not mean participants’ brains became ten years younger, that biological aging was reversed or that cognitive decline was cured.

Why might a phone-internet break help?
Mediation analyses suggest that participants changed how they spent time, reporting more in-person socializing, exercise, nature and other offline activities. The paper also discusses possible roles for sleep, social connection and a greater sense of control. These are plausible pathways, not proof that one mechanism explains the entire result.
The likely benefit may have come less from removing one particular app than from what replaced constant mobile browsing. Because the intervention removed all mobile internet, the trial cannot identify whether social media, news, shopping, video, messaging or general browsing mattered most.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
| Claim | Evidence |
|---|---|
| Constant mobile internet can affect well-being and attention | Supported by this randomized trial. |
| Smartphones are inherently harmful | Not established. |
| Social media alone caused the benefits | Not tested. |
| Internet access on every device is harmful | Not tested; other devices remained available. |
| Two weeks works for everyone | Not established. |
| The intervention treats depression or anxiety | Not established and not a substitute for clinical care. |
Important limitations behind the headline
- Adherence was low: compliance required the block to be active on at least 10 of 14 intervention days with limited disabling. Only 119 participants met that definition. The main intention-to-treat analysis included people whether or not they followed the instructions, which improves real-world relevance but means 467 people did not all complete a clean two-week block.
- The sample was selective: Prolific participants, iPhone users and people able to install the study app may not represent all ages, countries, operating systems or usage patterns.
- The intervention was short: four weeks of measurements cannot establish long-term benefits, harms or whether habits rebound.
- Expectations could matter: participants knew whether their internet access was blocked, and self-reported outcomes are susceptible to expectation effects.
- The comparison was not a perfect placebo: the delayed-intervention design did not match every aspect of attention and expectation.
- Attrition occurred: fewer participants completed later surveys than entered the study.
- Clinical comparisons are indirect: any comparison with antidepressants or cognitive-behavioral therapy is cross-study, not a head-to-head treatment trial. Populations, measures, duration and clinical context differ.
Is a two-week block practical?
A strict replication is demanding because it removes both Wi-Fi and cellular data while preserving only calls and SMS. Before attempting it, make a safety and access plan.
Check these dependencies first
- Emergency calling and a way for trusted contacts to reach you.
- Two-factor authentication, account recovery and work systems that require internet.
- Offline maps or another navigation option for travel.
- Caregiving, medical, accessibility and telehealth needs.
- Ride-hailing, public-transit, weather-alert and location-sharing requirements.
- Whether essential contacts use internet messaging rather than SMS.
Three levels of experiment
- Strict research-style block: disable mobile internet over both Wi-Fi and cellular networks for 14 days, while retaining calls and SMS. This most closely matches the trial, but it is the hardest to sustain.
- Category block: remove browsers, feeds, news, video and other high-distraction apps while retaining maps, banking, authentication and work tools. This is easier, but the study did not test it.
- Scheduled no-internet windows: create recurring periods such as evenings or weekends. This is the lowest-friction option and also an untested adaptation.
Internet access on another computer can become a substitute habit, so track what you do instead of assuming a phone block produces the same result for everyone.

What tools can and cannot promise
Freedom was the intervention tool in the published trial; its official site is freedom.to. A current product’s device support, Wi-Fi and cellular controls, locked sessions and bypass resistance should be checked before purchase. The study does not show that Freedom is uniquely responsible for the outcomes, nor that any app marketed as treating depression, anxiety, ADHD or cognitive decline is medically effective.
Apple Screen Time, Android Digital Wellbeing and other blockers may help with partial restrictions, but they should not be described as equivalent to the experiment unless they can block both cellular and Wi-Fi internet and prevent easy bypass.
The accurate takeaway
This trial supports a focused conclusion: constant mobile internet access—not necessarily the smartphone itself—may displace activities linked to well-being and sustained attention. A two-week mobile-internet break produced average improvements in this study, but low adherence, short duration and indirect measurements limit what can be claimed. Treat it as an experiment in changing your environment, not a universal prescription or a replacement for mental-health treatment.
