For straightforward desktop work with documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, LibreOffice is a practical open-source alternative to Microsoft 365. Its appeal is deliberately ordinary: install a conventional office suite, work with files locally, and export to common Microsoft formats. That is not the same as replacing Microsoft 365’s broader mix of online collaboration and services, and Microsoft-format export alone does not guarantee that complex files will look or behave exactly as they do in Microsoft Office.
What “stays boring” means in practice
Here, “boring” is a useful editorial description, not a claim that LibreOffice is objectively more reliable than every alternative. It means choosing a familiar desktop workflow for everyday office tasks rather than adopting a larger collaboration platform when you do not need one.

LibreOffice is actively maintained. The Document Foundation’s comparison page describes regular releases with security updates and lists version 26.8 as its latest major release, dated August 26, 2026. The same page says the suite exports to DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX. Those are project-published statements, not independent measurements of reliability or compatibility. LibreOffice vs OpenOffice

Can LibreOffice replace Microsoft Office?
It can be a fit if your main need is creating and editing documents, spreadsheets, and presentations on a desktop. The key question is not simply whether a file opens; it is whether the file you exchange retains the layout, formulas, features, and presentation behavior you need.
#1 Best Overall
- Ready To Boot: Linux Mint 22.3 'Zena' Cinnamon edition (64-bit), written to a 16GB USB flash drive and ready to use. Plug in, pick the drive from your boot menu, and you are running Linux in under a minute - no downloading or building your own installer.
- Live Or Install: Run Mint in Live mode to try it with no changes to your computer, or install it permanently in a few minutes. A practical way to move off Windows, bring an older laptop back to life, or learn Linux with no risk to your files.
- Wide Compatibility: Boots on modern UEFI and older Legacy BIOS systems with a 64-bit Intel or AMD processor, and works alongside Windows for dual-boot. Not compatible with Apple M-series Macs, Chromebooks, or tablets.
- Everything Included: Comes with LibreOffice, Firefox, Thunderbird, and media players out of the box, plus one-click access to thousands of free applications through the built-in Software Manager. The 16GB drive can also be erased and reused as an ordinary flash drive once you are done.
- Ready To Use: Each drive is written and checked so it boots the first time, with no configuration and no extra software to install - just plug it in and go.
Check your own files before switching
- Make copies of the documents you rely on, especially complex spreadsheets, heavily formatted reports, and presentations.
- Open and edit the copies in LibreOffice, then export them to the Microsoft formats your colleagues or clients use.
- Open the exported copies in the software and workflow used by the recipients. Check formatting and functionality, not just whether the files open.
- Keep the originals until you have confirmed that the round trip works for your actual documents.
The project’s stated export support establishes that those formats are available; it does not establish perfect fidelity for every file. A real-file test is the sensible basis for a migration decision.
When a desktop suite is not enough
Microsoft 365 is broader than desktop office applications. If your requirement includes browser-based co-editing, shared files, mail, calendar, or other team services, LibreOffice alone does not provide that complete service bundle.

Nextcloud’s Server 35 administration manual documents two collaborative office options: Nextcloud Office, powered by Euro-Office, and Collabora Online. It says both support common Microsoft Office and OpenDocument formats. These options make office editing part of a collaboration platform; they also introduce a platform and deployment choice beyond installing a desktop suite. Nextcloud Office documentation

Online editing can address shared-workflow needs, but it brings operational and file-format questions that a local desktop installation does not. For example, the ONLYOFFICE guide to integrating with Nextcloud requires a Document Server. It also describes converting non-OOXML files for editing and warns that converting them back may lose data or formatting. Keep source files and test important documents before relying on a conversion-based workflow. ONLYOFFICE Nextcloud integration guide

Choose by workflow, not by a universal ranking
| What you need | Practical direction | Trade-off to assess |
|---|---|---|
| Local document, spreadsheet, and presentation work | Try LibreOffice as a desktop suite. | Test your own Microsoft-format files for round-trip fidelity. |
| Browser-based co-editing and shared files | Evaluate a collaboration platform with an office editor, such as the options documented by Nextcloud. | Account for platform deployment and administration, not just the editor. |
| Editing through a Nextcloud integration | Review the selected editor’s integration requirements; the ONLYOFFICE guide requires a Document Server. | Conversion between formats may affect data or formatting. |
These are workflow distinctions, not independently tested rankings. The cited material is official product documentation; it does not establish comparative reliability rates, compatibility percentages, or migration savings.
