Why Indoor Air Can Be Worse Than You Expect—and What to Do About It

Indoor air can contain higher levels of some pollutants than outdoor air, but that does not mean every home is polluted or that indoor air is always worse. The main reasons are everyday sources inside the home, pollutants that enter from outdoors or the ground, and ventilation that may not remove emissions quickly enough. Start by reducing sources and improving ventilation where appropriate; use filtration as a supplement, and address hazards such as radon and carbon monoxide with their own safety measures.

What does “dirtier” indoor air mean?

There is no single measure of whether air is “dirty.” Indoor air contains a mix of possible pollutants, and levels vary by home and over time. A room may have more of one pollutant and less of another than outdoor air; a broad comparison cannot establish what is in your home.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says people spend 90 percent of their time indoors on average, and that indoor levels of some pollutants are often several times higher than outdoor levels. Those statements describe broad patterns, not every pollutant or household. EPA’s July 2025 indoor air quality factsheet provides that overview.

Where indoor pollutants come from

EPA groups potential sources across the home and its surroundings: combustion, consumer products, building materials and furnishings, moisture, soil gases such as radon, building systems, and outdoor air. Some sources release gases; others produce particles. Whether a pollutant builds up depends in part on the source, how it is used or maintained, and how much fresh air enters and indoor air is removed.

  • GENUINE REPLACEMENT FILTERS: For the best performance and longest lifespan, use official Levoit filters designed specifically for Levoit air purifiers. • FIND COMFORT: Our filter has strong filtration performance of fine particles. 99.97% filtration efficiency for 0.1 to 0.3μm airborne particulates, including pollen, dust, and animal dander allergens. Tested by an independent lab
  • Combustion: Gas stoves, furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces, and unvented space heaters can emit carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide, or particles. Emissions depend on factors such as installation, adjustment, maintenance, venting, fuel, and use.
  • Products and activities: Cleaning, maintenance, personal-care, and hobby products can release gases or particles. Tobacco smoke and other aerosols are additional sources.
  • Materials and furnishings: Some building materials and household furnishings emit pollutants. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are gases emitted by some solids and liquids, including many household products.
  • Moisture: Damp conditions can support mold and other biological contaminants. Temperature and humidity can also affect some pollutant concentrations.
  • Ground and outdoor air: Radon can enter from soil or rock below a home. Outdoor pollution can enter through openings or ventilation systems.

EPA’s pollutant and source catalog also discusses particulate matter, smoke, pesticides, asbestos, lead, and other pollutants. This list identifies possible concerns; it does not mean every item is present or airborne in every home.

Why VOCs get attention

EPA says concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors; for some, indoor concentrations can be up to ten times higher than outdoors. “Many” and “up to” matter: this is not a claim about every VOC or every home. The agency’s VOCs guidance also reports a historical finding: its TEAM study, completed in 1985, found levels of about a dozen common organic pollutants were two to five times higher inside homes than outside. That is evidence from that study, not a current universal measurement.

What to do first

EPA describes three broad approaches: source control, ventilation, and air cleaners or filtration. In its guidance, the agency says, “In most cases, source control is the most effective solution to indoor air quality problems.” Filtration can help, but it supplements rather than replaces source control and ventilation.

1. Reduce sources

  • Consider whether smoke, combustion appliances, or product use and storage could be contributing to indoor emissions.
  • Use and maintain fuel-burning appliances as directed, and make sure they are properly installed and vented.
  • Follow product instructions, including directions for use and storage; avoid unnecessary sources of smoke or aerosols indoors.
  • Address leaks and dampness promptly to reduce moisture-related problems.

2. Ventilate when conditions make it appropriate

Ventilation can dilute indoor pollutants by bringing in outdoor air and exhausting indoor air. Whether opening windows or using a ventilation system makes sense depends on outdoor conditions and the pollutant involved; bringing outdoor pollution indoors may not help. EPA’s home guidance covers ventilation and other practical actions.

3. Deal with moisture

Preventing mold starts with controlling moisture. Look for sources such as leaks or persistent dampness and address them rather than relying on an air cleaner to solve the underlying problem. EPA’s cited guidance does not establish one humidity target suitable for every home.

4. Test for radon

EPA recommends testing homes for radon, a soil gas that can enter from below. A DIY kit is one option described in its consumer guidance. Follow the test instructions and local guidance; if results are high, use the test guidance and seek qualified advice about mitigation.

5. Use CO alarms and maintain combustion appliances

EPA recommends CO alarms and proper maintenance and venting of combustion appliances. CO is colorless and odorless, so smell cannot tell you whether it is present. A CO alarm is a dedicated safety device, not a general indoor-air monitor.

6. Consider filtration for pollutants it can address

Portable air cleaners and HVAC filters can remove some airborne particles, depending on the device and its use. Some technologies are designed to address gases, but filtration does not solve every source or pollutant. A portable HEPA air cleaner is an option for supplemental particle filtration, not a universal purifier; it does not substitute for radon testing, a CO alarm, source control, ventilation, or moisture repair.

Before choosing a cleaner, match its intended pollutant and clean-air capacity to the room, and consider filter type, noise, maintenance, and replacement-filter availability. For a furnace or HVAC filter, check the system’s required dimensions and the maker’s recommendations rather than assuming the highest-efficiency filter is compatible. EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home explains portable cleaners and HVAC filters.

When to seek more specific guidance

General indoor-air advice cannot identify a pollutant or explain an individual’s symptoms. If you suspect a particular hazard, use the appropriate targeted step: test for radon, use CO alarms, or investigate a specific combustion, smoke, or moisture source. EPA’s indoor air quality overview and Care for Your Air guide provide further U.S.-focused information. Local building and radon guidance may differ.
