Forwarding an entire text conversation on Android is not always as simple as tapping one button. Some messaging apps let you select and forward mulle messages, while others only support forwarding one message at a time or require a workaround such as copying text, taking screenshots, exporting an SMS backup, or using a third-party tool.
The best method depends on the app you use, whether the conversation is SMS/MMS, RCS, WhatsApp, Messenger, Signal, or another platform, and whether you need the thread to stay readable with timestamps, sender names, images, and attachments. It also matters whether you are sharing the conversation for personal reference, legal documentation, customer support, or transferring it to another device.

This guide walks through the practical options Android users can use to share a full text thread, along with the common limitations, privacy concerns, formatting issues, and troubleshooting steps that can affect the final result.
What to Know Before Forwarding a Full Text Conversation on Android
Before you try to forward an entire text conversation on Android, it helps to understand that “text conversation” can mean different things depending on the app. Standard SMS and MMS messages are usually handled by apps like Google Messages, Samsung Messages, or a carrier messaging app. Chat conversations may live in apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Facebook Messenger, or Google Chat. Each app stores, formats, and shares messages differently, so the best method depends on where the thread is located and who you need to send it to.

Android does not offer one universal button that forwards a complete conversation from every messaging app. In many SMS apps, you can select and forward mulle individual messages, but the recipient may receive them as separate texts rather than as one clean thread. Some apps also limit how many messages you can select at once, exclude images or attachments, or remove timestamps and sender names. If you need the conversation for legal, work, support, or record-keeping purposes, preserving context matters just as much as sending the words.
Check these details before choosing a method
- Messaging app: Google Messages, Samsung Messages, WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram all have different forwarding and export options.
- Message type: SMS, MMS, and RCS chats may not behave the same way. RCS conversations can include read receipts, reactions, high-resolution media, and typing indicators that may not transfer when forwarded.
- Attachments: Photos, videos, voice notes, contact cards, GIFs, and documents may need to be saved or shared separately.
- Thread length: Very long conversations are often easier to share as screenshots, PDFs, exported files, or backups rather than forwarded message by message.
- Recipient needs: A friend may only need readable screenshots, while a company, technician, lawyer, or support team may prefer a dated export or PDF.
You should also consider privacy before sharing a full thread. A conversation can include phone numbers, addresses, verification codes, personal photos, financial details, location links, or messages from other people who did not agree to be included. If you only need to share part of the thread, crop screenshots, redact sensitive details, or copy only the relevant messages. Be careful with one-time passcodes, account recovery links, medical details, and workplace information, especially if you plan to send the conversation through email or a cloud link.
Formatting is another common issue. Forwarded texts may lose timestamps, contact names, emoji styling, message bubbles, or the distinction between sent and received messages. Screenshots preserve the original look but can be hard to search. Copying and pasting is searchable but may require manual labels such as “Me:” and “Alex:” to make the exchange understandable. Export tools can create cleaner records, but they may require storage permissions, backup access, or a paid upgrade for PDF or full-thread export features.

Once you know the app, message type, privacy needs, and desired format, you can choose the method that fits best.
Method 1: Forward Multiple Messages from Your Messaging App
The simplest place to start is the messaging app you already use. Many Android SMS and RCS apps let you select more than one message inside a thread and forward them to another contact, email-to-SMS address, or group chat. This works best when you only need to share part of a conversation rather than a full thread with hundreds of messages.
Forward multiple messages in Google Messages
- Open Messages by Google on your Android phone.
- Tap the conversation you want to share.
- Press and hold the first message you want to forward.
- Tap any additional messages you want to include. Selected messages are usually highlighted or checked.
- Tap the three-dot menu or the forward/share icon, depending on your app version.
- Choose Forward or Share.
- Select the recipient, then send the forwarded messages.
Google Messages may forward selected texts as separate message bubbles rather than as one perfectly preserved conversation. Sender names, timestamps, emojis, images, and reactions may not transfer exactly as they appeared in the original thread. If the conversation uses RCS features such as read receipts, typing indicators, high-resolution media, or message reactions, those details may be simplified or omitted when forwarded.
Forward messages in Samsung Messages
- Open Samsung Messages.
- Open the conversation you want to forward.
- Touch and hold a message until selection mode appears.
- Select the other messages you want to include.
- Tap Forward, Share, or the three-dot menu if the option is hidden.
- Pick the recipient and send.
On some Samsung phones, the app may limit forwarding to one message at a time, especially on older versions or carrier-customized builds. If you do not see a multi-select option, update the app, check whether Google Messages is your default SMS app, or try the manual copy, screenshot, or export methods later in this guide.

What changes when forwarding from chat apps
Apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram handle forwarding differently from SMS apps. WhatsApp lets you select mulle messages and forward them, but forwarded labels may appear, and some media may be grouped separately. Telegram usually handles multi-select forwarding well, with options to show or hide sender names in some cases. Signal is more restrictive by design and may not preserve every original detail. Facebook Messenger and Instagram often make it easier to forward individual messages than entire conversation segments.

| App type | Best for | Common limitation |
|---|---|---|
| SMS/MMS apps | Short sections of text messages | Timestamps and sender labels may not carry over |
| RCS chats | Recent Android-to-Android conversations | Reactions, read receipts, and rich media may change |
| Encrypted chat apps | Sharing selected messages securely within the same app | Exporting or forwarding may be restricted |
Before sending, review the forwarded content in the compose box. Remove anything unrelated, confirm the recipient, and check whether private details such as phone numbers, addresses, verification codes, photos, or account information are included. If you need the conversation to look exactly like it did on your screen, screenshots or an SMS export will usually preserve context better than the built-in forward button.
Method 2: Copy and Paste the Conversation Manually
If your messaging app does not let you forward several messages at once, the simplest workaround is to copy the conversation text manually and paste it into another app, such as Gmail, Google Docs, Samsung s, WhatsApp, or a new SMS/MMS thread. This method works best for shorter conversations, specific parts of a thread, or messages you want to clean up before sharing.
How to copy messages from an Android text thread
- Open your messaging app, such as Google Messages, Samsung Messages, or your carrier’s SMS app.
- Open the conversation you want to share.
- Press and hold the first message you want to copy.
- Look for a Copy option in the pop-up menu or top toolbar. In some apps, you may need to tap the three-dot menu first.
- Open the app where you want to send or save the conversation.
- Press and hold in the text field, then tap Paste.
- Repeat the process for additional messages until you have copied the full conversation or the section you need.
Some Android messaging apps allow you to select mulle messages, but still only copy the message bodies without names, phone numbers, dates, or timestamps. Others copy one message at a time only. If you need context, add labels manually as you paste, such as Me:, Alex:, or the date and time shown in the thread. This makes the pasted version easier to understand, especially if the conversation will be sent by email or saved as a document.
How to make the copied conversation readable
Manual copying can quickly become messy, so it helps to format the text as you go. Paste the messages into a or document first instead of sending them immediately. Then add line breaks between messages, remove repeated content, and include missing details like dates, contact names, and any relevant attachment descriptions. For example, if a message included a photo, you can write [Photo attached in original conversation] and then send the image separately.
- For email: paste the thread into the email body, then add a short introduction explaining what the conversation contains.
- For documents: use Google Docs or Microsoft Word so you can edit spacing, headings, and dates before sharing.
- For another text message: keep the pasted content short, since long SMS messages may be split into multiple texts or converted to MMS.
- For legal, HR, or support use: preserve timestamps as accurately as possible and avoid editing message wording.
Be aware that copy and paste may not include emojis, reactions, stickers, images, videos, voice s, or read receipts in the same way they appeared in the original app. RCS chats in Google Messages, WhatsApp conversations, Telegram chats, and Facebook Messenger threads can each handle copied content differently. If the exact appearance of the thread matters, screenshots or an export method may be more reliable than plain text copying.
If copying does not work, update the messaging app, restart your phone, or try copying from a different screen, such as the message details view if your app provides one. On some devices, a work profile, security policy, or protected messaging app may block clipboard access. In that case, you may need to use screenshots, a backup tool, or the app’s built-in export feature instead.
Method 3: Take Screenshots or Screen Record the Conversation
If your messaging app does not let you select and forward many messages at once, screenshots are often the quickest way to share an entire text conversation while preserving its original layout. This works well for SMS/MMS apps, Google Messages, Samsung Messages, WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, Instagram DMs, and most other chat apps. The tradeoff is that screenshots create images rather than editable text, so the recipient cannot easily search, copy, or quote individual messages unless they use OCR.

On Samsung devices, you may also be able to swipe the edge of your palm across the screen, or use the Screenshot button from the Quick Settings panel. After each screenshot, scroll down slightly and capture the next portion of the conversation. Keep a small overlap between screenshots so the recipient can follow the order without missing any messages.

Some Android phones offer a scrolling screenshot feature, which is useful for long text threads. After taking a screenshot, look for an option such as Capture more, Scroll, Scrollshot, or a downward arrow icon. Tap it until the full section of the conversation is included, then save the image. This feature is available on many Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and Motorola models, but it may not appear in every messaging app. If the app blocks scrolling screenshots or only captures the visible screen, use mulle standard screenshots instead.
How to share the screenshots
- Open your Photos, Gallery, or Google Photos app.
- Select the screenshots in the correct order.
- Tap Share.
- Choose the destination, such as email, Google Drive, WhatsApp, Messages, or another app.
- Add context in the message, such as the contact name, date range, or what the recipient should look for.
For longer conversations, screen recording can be easier than sending dozens of images. Swipe down from the top of the screen twice to open Quick Settings, then tap Screen Record or Screen Recorder. Choose whether to record device audio, microphone audio, or no audio, then start recording. Slowly scroll through the conversation from beginning to end, pausing briefly at messages so they are readable. Stop the recording from the notification shade when finished, then share the saved video from your Gallery or Photos app.
Before sending screenshots or recordings, review them carefully for private information. Crop out phone numbers, addresses, verification codes, bank details, photos, and unrelated notifications. If your phone shows message previews, calendar alerts, or email notifications while recording, turn on Do Not Disturb first. You can also use the built-in markup tool in Photos or Gallery to blur, cover, or crop sensitive areas before sharing.

If images are blurry, increase screen brightness, avoid heavy compression by sending through email or cloud storage, and do not zoom too far before capturing. If screen recording is missing from Quick Settings, tap the pencil or edit icon and add it, or search Settings for “screen recorder.” Keep in mind that some privacy-focused apps may block screenshots or show a blank screen; in that case, you may need to use the app’s export feature, copy text manually, or ask the other participant for a shareable copy.
Method 4: Export or Back Up SMS Conversations
If you need to share or preserve an entire SMS conversation, exporting or backing up the thread is usually cleaner than forwarding messages one by one. This method works best for standard SMS and MMS conversations handled by apps such as Google Messages, Samsung Messages, or another default texting app. It is less useful for internet-based chats in WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Facebook Messenger, or Instagram, because those apps store conversations separately and have their own export or backup tools.
Android does not include one universal “export this entire text thread” button in every messaging app, but you can still create a usable copy through device backup, SMS export apps, or manufacturer tools. The result may be a file such as XML, CSV, TXT, PDF, or HTML, depending on the tool you use. Some formats are better for restoring messages to another phone, while others are better for reading, printing, emailing, or saving as evidence.
Export SMS messages with a backup app
- Open the Google Play Store and search for a reputable SMS backup app, such as SMS Backup & Restore.
- Install the app, then open it and grant the requested SMS, contacts, call log, and storage permissions only if you are comfortable doing so.
- Choose Set Up a Backup or a similar option.
- Select Messages. If you also need photos, group texts, audio clips, or other media, enable MMS backup if the app supports it.
- Choose where to save the backup, such as Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or local phone storage.
- Run the backup, then locate the exported file and share it by email, cloud link, USB transfer, or another secure method.
For restoring messages to another Android phone, an XML backup is often the most reliable choice. For sending a readable conversation to another person, look for an export option that creates a PDF, TXT, CSV, or HTML file. If the app only creates XML, the recipient may need the same app or a viewer tool to read it comfortably. Before sharing, open the file yourself and confirm that message order, timestamps, sender names, and attachments are included correctly.

You can also back up SMS messages through Android’s system backup. Go to Settings, then look for Google, Backup, or System > Backup, depending on your phone. Turn on backup and confirm that SMS messages are included. Samsung users may also have Samsung Cloud or Smart Switch, which can transfer text messages to another Samsung phone or create a backup on a computer. These options are useful for moving conversations between devices, but they usually do not create a simple file you can casually forward to someone.

| Export method | Best for | Common limitation |
|---|---|---|
| SMS backup app | Saving or sharing full SMS threads | May require permissions and may not include every MMS attachment |
| Google Android backup | Restoring messages to a new Android phone | Not designed for readable file sharing |
| Samsung Smart Switch | Transferring messages between Samsung devices or to a computer | Works best within Samsung’s ecosystem |
| PDF or HTML export | Printing, emailing, or archiving a readable conversation | Formatting depends on the export app |
When exporting SMS conversations, check the privacy settings carefully. A full thread can contain phone numbers, addresses, verification codes, photos, payment details, medical information, or private comments from other people. If you only need part of the conversation, use an app that lets you filter by contact, date range, or message type. For sensitive files, avoid public sharing links, use password-protected cloud folders when available, and delete temporary exports from your Downloads folder after sending or storing them securely.
Using Third-Party Apps to Share Full Text Threads
If your built-in Messages app cannot forward an entire conversation in a usable format, a third-party SMS backup or export app can help. These apps are most useful for standard SMS and MMS conversations because they can read your device’s local message database, then convert threads into shareable files such as PDF, TXT, HTML, CSV, or XML. They are less useful for encrypted chat apps like WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, or Google Messages RCS chats, which usually require their own export, backup, or screenshot method.
Common options include SMS Backup & Restore, SMS Backup+, and dedicated “SMS to PDF” or “SMS export” apps available from Google Play. The exact steps vary by app, but the general process is similar: install the app, grant SMS permissions, choose the conversation you want to export, select a file format, then save or share the exported file through Gmail, Google Drive, Dropbox, Nearby Share, or another app. If you need the conversation for records, a PDF or HTML export is often easier to read than a plain text file. If you need to search, filter, or import the data elsewhere, CSV or XML may be better.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Basic steps for exporting a thread with a third-party app
- Open the Google Play Store and search for a reputable SMS export or backup app.
- Check the app’s reviews, update history, permissions, and privacy policy before installing it.
- Open the app and allow only the permissions required to read and export SMS or MMS.
- Select the specific conversation thread instead of exporting all messages, if the app supports it.
- Choose the output format, such as PDF, TXT, HTML, CSV, or XML.
- Preview the export when available to confirm names, phone numbers, timestamps, and attachments are included correctly.
- Save the file locally or share it through a secure service such as encrypted email, a private cloud folder, or a password-protected archive.
Before relying on an export, check how the app handles multimedia messages. Some tools include images, videos, audio clips, and group-message details in the same file, while others export only the text and timestamps. Group texts can also be messy because senders may appear by phone number instead of contact name. If the conversation includes legal, financial, medical, or workplace information, export a small test thread first so you know exactly what the recipient will see.
Be cautious with apps that request broad access to contacts, storage, cloud accounts, or notifications when those permissions are not necessary. Avoid uploading sensitive conversations to unknown servers, and prefer apps that create local exports on your phone. After sending the thread, consider deleting temporary files from your Downloads folder, file manager, cloud trash, and email outbox if you no longer need them. If the export fails, try disabling battery optimization for the export app, freeing storage space, shortening the selected date range, or switching to a simpler format like TXT before attempting a larger PDF export.

Before sending a full text thread, review it as if it will be forwarded again or stored permanently. Text conversations can include phone numbers, addresses, verification codes, medical details, payment information, photos, and names of people who did not agree to be included. If you are sharing the conversation for work, legal, support, or personal reasons, remove anything unrelated to the purpose. On Android, you can use the built-in photo editor or Markup tools in Google Photos, Samsung Gallery, or similar apps to blur or cover sensitive parts of screenshots before sending them.
Formatting matters because forwarded conversations can become confusing once they leave the messaging app. If you copy and paste messages into Gmail, Google Docs, WhatsApp, or another app, add clear labels such as Me: and Alex:, and keep dates and times where possible. For long conversations, divide the thread by day or topic so the recipient can follow it easily. If you are exporting SMS to a PDF, TXT, CSV, or XML file, open the file first and confirm that sender names, timestamps, emojis, attachments, and line breaks are readable before you share it.
Privacy checks before sending
- Redact private data: Hide addresses, account numbers, one-time passcodes, email addresses, and unrelated phone numbers.
- Check attachments: Images, voice notes, stickers, PDFs, and videos may contain extra personal information or location details.
- Use secure sharing: For sensitive threads, avoid public links. Send through encrypted apps, password-protected files, or trusted cloud folders with restricted access.
- Confirm consent: If the thread includes another person’s private information, consider asking before sharing it, especially in workplace or group-chat situations.
If the conversation does not forward correctly, the issue is usually caused by app limits, RCS features, file size, or missing permissions. Google Messages may let you select and forward mulle messages, but it usually does not preserve the thread exactly as it appeared on your screen. Samsung Messages and carrier messaging apps may behave differently. Apps such as WhatsApp, Messenger, Signal, and Telegram also have their own forwarding rules, and some limit how many messages, photos, or files can be forwarded at once. When formatting is lost, try exporting to PDF, taking scrolling screenshots if your phone supports them, or copying the thread into a document and cleaning it up manually.

Common problems and quick fixes
- Messages are out of order: Sort the conversation by date, include timestamps, or export again using a tool that preserves chronological order.
- Only one message forwards: Long-press each message and select multiple items if your app supports it, or use copy, screenshots, or export instead.
- Photos or videos are missing: Download attachments to your device first, then send them separately or include them in a PDF/document.
- The file is too large: Compress the PDF, split screenshots into batches, upload to cloud storage, or share a ZIP file if appropriate.
- Export app cannot find messages: Check SMS permission, default messaging app settings, Android storage access, and whether the thread is SMS/MMS or an internet-based chat.
- Recipient cannot open the file: Use common formats such as PDF, TXT, JPG, or MP4 instead of app-specific backup files.
For the cleanest result, match the method to the situation: screenshots are best when appearance matters, copy and paste works for short excerpts, and exports are better for long SMS histories. After sending, ask the recipient to confirm that they can open the file and read the conversation in the intended order.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I forward an entire text thread at once on Android?
Most Android messaging apps do not offer a true “forward entire conversation” button. In Google Messages and Samsung Messages, you can usually select and forward mulle individual SMS or MMS messages, but the recipient may receive them as separate texts rather than one organized thread. For a complete conversation with timestamps and contact details, exporting, backing up, screenshots, or copying into a document is usually more reliable.
How do I forward multiple messages in Google Messages?
Open the conversation, press and hold one message, then tap any additional messages you want to include if multi-select is available on your device. Tap the forward or share icon, choose the recipient or app, and send. If you do not see multi-select, your version of Google Messages may only allow forwarding one message at a time, so copying, screenshots, or an SMS backup app may work better.
What is the best way to send a text conversation for legal, work, or documentation purposes?
Use screenshots or an SMS export tool that preserves sender names, phone numbers, dates, and times. Screenshots are easy for short threads, while export apps are better for long conversations because they can create searchable PDF, TXT, CSV, or XML files. Avoid editing the content, and keep the original messages on your phone in case you need to verify them later.
Can I export RCS chats, WhatsApp chats, or Facebook Messenger conversations the same way as SMS?
No, SMS/MMS, RCS, WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, and Messenger each handle forwarding and exporting differently. SMS backup apps usually work only with standard SMS and MMS, not encrypted app-based chats or all RCS content. For apps like WhatsApp or Telegram, use the built-in export or share options inside that specific app when available.
What should I check before sharing a full text conversation with someone else?
Review the thread for private details such as phone numbers, addresses, passwords, payment information, medical details, and photos. If needed, crop screenshots or redact sensitive sections before sending. Also confirm that attachments, emojis, reactions, and timestamps are included if they are relevant, because some forwarding methods remove formatting or split messages out of order.
Bottom Line
Forwarding an entire text conversation on Android usually takes a little creativity, because most messaging apps only let you forward individual messages or selected parts of a thread. Start with the built-in share, copy, screenshot, or export options in your specific app, then use a trusted backup/export tool if you need a cleaner file for records, legal use, or long conversations.
Recommended Free Tools
Before sending anything, review the thread for private details, confirm the formatting is readable, and test the file or screenshots on another device if accuracy matters. If one method does not work, switch to copying, exporting, or creating a PDF-style record so the recipient gets the full conversation clearly.
