In a 2016 study, the cells retained about 90% viability after 24 hours of reculture at one tested operating point. That is evidence the platform could nebulize cells while preserving measured laboratory characteristics—not evidence that sound waves or inhaled stem cells treat lung disease in people.
What does “sound” mean in this approach?
It does not mean listening to sound or applying sound therapy to a patient. The study used high-frequency surface acoustic waves (SAWs) generated on a microfluidic device. Those waves acted on a liquid containing cells and produced an aerosol that could, in principle, be inhaled.

The researchers tested mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), a cell type being investigated for potential therapeutic uses. The work was about how to aerosolize these cells and what happened to them during the process—not a trial of a treatment for a particular lung disease.

What did the study measure?
Alhasan and colleagues evaluated the platform in a paper published in Integrative Biology in 2016. They assessed cell viability, morphology, metabolic activity, proliferation, and genetic and phenotypic characteristics using laboratory staining and cellular and molecular assays. Their results supported the feasibility of producing an MSC-containing aerosol while preserving several measured cell characteristics relative to controls.

At the reported 1.5 W operating condition, the authors measured approximately 90% cell viability after 24-hour reculture and a nebulization rate of 100 μL/min. These figures describe a particular experimental platform and operating point; they are not patient outcome statistics. The study also found a trade-off: raising applied power increased nebulization rate but reduced cell viability.
How does the acoustic platform compare with other nebulization methods?
The paper places SAWs in the 10–100 MHz frequency order, while conventional bulk ultrasonic nebulizers operate at roughly 10 kHz to 1 MHz. The authors discuss potential stresses associated with existing approaches, including shear, cavitation, and heat from jet and ultrasonic nebulizers, and the high-voltage potentials required for electrospray. These are engineering considerations, not proof that the acoustic platform is clinically superior.

| Approach | Technical consideration described in the paper |
|---|---|
| Surface acoustic waves on a microfluidic device | Operates in the 10–100 MHz order. In the reported study, 1.5 W produced a measured nebulization rate of 100 μL/min and about 90% viability after 24-hour reculture. |
| Bulk ultrasonic nebulization | Operates at roughly 10 kHz to 1 MHz; the paper discusses cavitation and heat among possible stresses. |
| Jet nebulization | The paper discusses shear among possible stresses imposed on fragile cells. |
| Electrospray | The paper notes the need for high-voltage potentials. |
The authors caution that direct comparisons are difficult because inhaled stem-cell therapy is novel. The study does not establish comparative effectiveness in treating disease, and its discussion of portability and low cost is a description of the platform’s potential rather than evidence of a marketed or clinically validated device.
Does this show that inhaled stem cells can treat lung disease?
No. The experiments addressed aerosol production and measured cell properties after nebulization. They did not show that the cells reach diseased tissue in a person, improve lung function, are safe when inhaled, or produce a clinical benefit. The paper itself notes the novelty of inhaled stem-cell therapy and the difficulty of comparing delivery methods.

The distinction matters: preserving cells in a laboratory assay is an early technical milestone, not proof of safety or efficacy in patients. The available evidence does not support using a consumer nebulizer to deliver stem cells or treating lung disease with sound waves.
What remains to be established?
- Whether inhaled cells can be delivered to the intended parts of the lungs and remain viable and functional there.
- Whether this approach is safe and effective for any specific lung disease in people.
- How the device performs in clinical conditions and how it compares with other delivery methods for meaningful patient outcomes.
- Whether a clinically validated, patient-facing version of the platform becomes available.
