A Social Layer for a Game Nobody Plays at the Same Time

A social game does not need simultaneous sessions. A persistent record and thoughtful touchpoints can help players follow activity across separate visits.

A game can feel social without putting its players online together. For a game built around separate visits, a social layer can make other people’s actions visible through an ongoing activity record, pending turns, and results—then give players ways to participate before, during, or after their own play.

Those are design options, not proven features of a particular game. The right choices depend on what “social” should mean for its players: interaction, a sense of other people’s presence, community, or some other outcome.

What makes asynchronous play social?

Social gaming is broader than live multiplayer. It can include people playing at different times, as well as spectators who follow without taking an active turn. A systematic review by David Gonçalves, Pedro Pais, Kathrin Gerling, Tiago Guerreiro, and André Rodrigues gathered 263 publications for its corpus in February 2021 and describes social gaming across different roles and forms of interaction. In an asynchronous game, players may never share a session and still affect—or observe—an ongoing shared experience. The design problem is therefore not simply how to add chat. It is how to help each person understand what others have done, what is waiting for them, and how their own actions fit into the activity.

Give the game a persistent social record

A player who returns after hours or days needs context. A persistent history can show ongoing games, whose turn is pending, and what the outcomes have been. The paper Principles for Engineering Social Interaction in Asynchronous Mobile Games identifies game history as useful for tracking these things. Read the paper.

For a hypothetical game, that record might combine recent actions, outstanding turns, and resolved results in one place. The key is that a player should be able to tell what changed since their last visit without relying on memory or searching through disconnected screens. A record of activity is a design foundation; it does not, by itself, prove that players feel connected.

Design the whole cycle around play

Social interaction need not begin when a player makes a move or end when a round is resolved. The asynchronous-game principles call attention to engagement before play, during gameplay, and after play.

  • Before play: Make it clear whether anything is waiting, what has happened since the last visit, and what action is available.
  • During play: Let players understand how their contribution relates to other people’s actions, even when those actions happened earlier or will happen later.
  • After play: Make outcomes legible and leave room for follow-up interaction, rather than treating the result screen as the end of the social experience.

These are points to consider, not a validated recipe. The cited principles do not establish that one particular sequence or interface works best for every game.

Choose the social outcome before choosing features

“Social” can mean several different things: more interaction, a stronger sense that others are present, better perceptions of co-players or a community, or effects on relationships and well-being. These are distinct outcomes. A feature being available—such as a history feed or a message option—does not demonstrate that it achieved any of them.

Decide which outcome matters for the game, then evaluate that outcome directly. The systematic review notes methodological limitations in the field, including a lack of in-the-wild studies and established constructs for assessing social outcomes. That is a reason to be careful with claims that an asynchronous feature improves retention, relationships, or well-being without evidence from the relevant game and audience.

What industry surveys say—and do not say

Two Unity reports show that asynchronous multiplayer has appeared in developer surveys, but their figures are not a direct year-to-year comparison:

Report Reported finding How to read it
Unity’s 2025 report 72% of surveyed respondents said they were building asynchronous multiplayer games; the report cites a Cint survey of 300 respondents conducted in 2024. A finding from that survey and wording, not the percentage of games or players using asynchronous play.
Unity’s 2026 report 39% of respondents reported creating asynchronous multiplayer games; the report cites a Cint survey of 300 respondents conducted in 2025. A separate survey finding with different report wording; it should not be presented as a trend directly comparable to the 2025 report.

Player survey findings offer context, not proof about a proposed design. Google for Games’ 2022 PC and Console Insights Report said nearly 40% of surveyed players cited the opportunity to interact with family and friends as what kept them playing. The report also said 41% communicated by text and 32% by voice chat. Those are findings from that report’s survey, not measurements of an asynchronous social layer. Read the report.

Questions to settle for a specific game

Without a defined game, audience, platform, or core loop, no implementation can be recommended as the winner. These questions help turn the concept into a design brief:

  • Will players act asynchronously, observe other players, or do both?
  • How will someone discover pending activity and understand what changed since their last visit?
  • Which information persists between visits—activity history, messages, results, or some combination?
  • Which social outcome is the design meant to support, and how will that outcome be assessed?

These questions help distinguish the experience being designed; they do not establish that any particular option performs better.
