A bookmark can give someone a familiar way into smart-home controls without asking them to install another app—but only if it opens a page they can access and use. The title does not identify the bookmarked page or smart-home system, so the useful takeaway is the approach: choose one dependable entry point, then check what it actually lets your household do.
What a bookmark can—and cannot—solve
A bookmark is a shortcut to a web page, not a universal smart-home controller. Its usefulness depends on the destination: the page must show the relevant devices, work on the person’s phone or browser, and allow access to the controls they need. A saved link that leads to a login screen, an unfamiliar interface, or an inaccessible dashboard may be no improvement over installing an app.

A single dashboard can bring device status and controls together. Home Assistant describes a dashboard as what a household sees when it opens the Home Assistant app or website, and its documentation explains that dashboards can be customized for different contexts, such as a kitchen tablet or guests. Home Assistant’s dashboard documentation describes that option; it does not establish that Home Assistant is the system behind this particular bookmark.
Choose the shortcut by the action it needs to reach
There are a few distinct ways to reduce the effort of reaching a smart-home control. They are not interchangeable: a browser bookmark opens a page, a widget exposes selected controls, and automation or voice control may bypass the screen altogether. The right choice depends on the devices and platform already in use.

| Approach | What it opens | Best fit | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser bookmark | A saved web page, such as a household dashboard | A person who prefers a familiar link and a page that works well in the phone’s browser | The page must be reachable, authenticated as needed, and usable on that device; the title does not identify the actual destination. |
| Phone widget | Selected controls on a compatible phone | Quick access to a small set of frequently used devices | Tile behavior varies: some controls act directly, while others open the associated app. Compatibility and authentication requirements apply. |
| Automation or voice control | A routine or spoken command, where supported | Repeated actions that do not need a person to browse a dashboard each time | Availability depends on the household’s platform, device support, configuration, and preferences. |
Google documents a Favorites widget for selected smart-home controls on compatible phones. Its guidance distinguishes tiles that toggle devices from camera, Wi-Fi, thermostat, and command tiles that open the Google Home app; it also notes that sensitive actions can require authentication. See Google’s instructions for the Favorites widget for supported versions and behavior. A widget may shorten the route without eliminating the app.
Make a dashboard useful to more than one person
If the bookmarked page is a dashboard, keep its first view focused on the controls the person actually uses. A shared household page need not mirror the full configuration interface: clear labels, a small set of relevant devices, and a layout that works on the target screen matter more than exposing every possible control. Separate views can also suit different places or users, such as a kitchen screen and a guest-facing view.

Home Assistant supports multiple dashboards and lets users choose a default dashboard. Its documentation also describes a webpage dashboard that embeds another page, but browser security rules prevent some sites from being embedded. Details are in Home Assistant’s multiple-dashboard documentation. This is an option only when Home Assistant is actually part of the setup and the target page permits embedding.

In Home Assistant, taking control of the automatically generated Overview dashboard changes its maintenance behavior: it stops automatically adding newly discovered entities. The onboarding guide recommends creating a separate dashboard if you want to preserve the default’s automatic updates while building a tailored view. See Home Assistant’s dashboard introduction for the distinction between the default Overview and a dashboard you manage yourself.

Upgrade-friendly, it supports migrating Zigbee devices from older Aqara hubs.
- [Smart IR Blaster with Feedback and Learning] The 360°IR blaster not only sends commands but also provides accurate status updates by detecting traditional remote use. It connects IR air conditioning units to Matter, functioning as an AC thermostat when paired with an Aqara Temperature and Humidity Sensor. (Note: Only one AC device can be exposed to Matter. Functionality may vary based on the Matter integration app. For Apple Home exposure, use Matter integration instead of HomeKit.)

- [Privacy-Focused with Encrypted Storage, Easy Setup and Versatile Placement] The M3 prioritizes privacy by excluding microphone or camera components. It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.
Check access and safety before sharing the bookmark
- Open the link on the recipient’s own device and confirm it lands on the intended page rather than a setup or sign-in screen.
- Check whether the page remains available after the browser is closed and reopened, and whether authentication has to be repeated.
- Test the exact controls the person is expected to use. A dashboard that displays a device does not necessarily provide every action or status.
- Decide which actions should require authentication. Google specifically notes varying authentication requirements for sensitive controls such as locks, garage doors, and cameras in its Favorites widget guidance.
- For a Home Assistant dashboard link, the Companion app supports dashboard-path deep links through its URL handler; this is relevant when that app is already installed, not a replacement for confirming the actual bookmark destination. See the Home Assistant Companion URL Handler documentation.
Use the lightest shortcut that fits the household
If the need is simply to get to one web-based control page, a bookmark can be enough. If the person wants a handful of direct controls on a compatible phone, check whether a widget supports those specific devices and actions. For routine actions, automation or voice control may avoid opening a page or app, when the existing system supports them; Home Assistant discusses both options in its FAQ. None of these paths is universally easiest without knowing the platform, device, and person using it.
