A Simpler Way to Generate Hydrogen Radicals Uses Hydrazine, a Sulfur Catalyst and Violet Light

A reported UCL technique uses hydrazine, a sulfur-based organocatalyst and violet LED irradiation at about 30°C to generate hydrogen radicals for chemical reactions.

A method reported by a University College London team generates hydrogen radicals from hydrazine and a sulfur-based organocatalyst using violet LED light at about 30°C. The approach avoids hydrogen gas, pressure equipment and precious or toxic metals, and the team reported applications including alkene hydrogenation and dehalogenation. The findings were described by Chemistry World on 15 September 2026; the underlying paper and experimental protocol have not been independently checked here.

What the technique uses

The reported reaction combines hydrazine with a sulfur-based organocatalyst and irradiates the mixture with a violet LED at approximately 30°C. In contrast to some earlier ways of producing hydrogen radicals—which, the report says, could involve white-hot filaments, electrical discharges, mercury lamps or ionising radiation—the described approach uses comparatively mild conditions and a simple light source. That is the report’s comparison, not a comprehensive review of every radical-generation method.

“Any chemist could run it,” project leader Roopender Kumar of University College London said, as quoted by Chemistry World. That remark should not be read as a validated, ready-to-use procedure: the report does not establish the exact catalyst identity, lamp wavelength or intensity, or a detailed safety protocol.

How light is said to release the hydrogen radical

In the mechanism described by Chemistry World, hydrazine and the sulfur catalyst first form an intermediate. Ultraviolet irradiation then produces an unusual, neutral Rydberg radical—described as protonated hydrazine carrying an extra electron. This unstable species rapidly splits into hydrazine and a hydrogen radical. This is the report’s account of the proposed mechanism; the primary paper was not available for verification.

Hydrogen radicals are highly reactive, which makes them useful for chemical transformations but difficult to generate under practical laboratory conditions. A light-triggered route is therefore notable because it aims to produce the reactive species without relying on the harsher or more specialized sources mentioned in the report.

What reactions the team reported

Alkene hydrogenation

The team reported using the method to hydrogenate alkenes, with yields of up to 96% on a gram scale. Chemistry World also reported that the reactions tolerated aryl chlorides, aryl bromides and carbamates—functional groups that can be vulnerable under some conventional palladium-catalysed hydrogenation conditions. This is a reported comparison, not an independent head-to-head test. The maximum yield is not tied in the report to a fully specified substrate and set of conditions, so it should not be treated as a general expected yield.

Dehalogenation

Dehalogenation was another reported application. The news account does not give enough detail to infer a general substrate scope, typical yield or exact operating conditions for that reaction.

What is—and is not—established

Maxie Roessler, a radical chemistry and electron paramagnetic resonance expert at Imperial College London who was not involved in the study, called the work “a big breakthrough,” pointing to the generation of hydrogen radicals under mild conditions with simple near-UV light sources. That is an external expert’s assessment, not evidence of independent replication.
