It is not one standardized conversion method, and results depend on the feedstock, chemistry, equipment, and operating conditions. In a 2025 birch-sawdust study, ultrasound changed the solid material but did not increase furfural yield over matched silent acid treatment.
What “transforming sawdust with ultrasound” means
Ultrasound is being tested as a way to intensify several different biomass processes, rather than as a single route to a finished product. Studies have used it to pretreat birch sawdust before examining hemicellulose conversion, assist alkaline lignin removal before enzymatic hydrolysis, and complement fungal treatment. The output being measured therefore varies: particle size, crystallinity, lignin removal, reducing sugars, or furfural yield.

Those outcomes should not be treated as interchangeable. A higher delignification percentage in one process does not establish higher furfural yield in another, especially when the feedstock, reactor, chemistry, and control differ.

What ultrasound did to birch sawdust in a 2025 study
Kälkäjä and colleagues tested birch sawdust in a laboratory batch reactor fitted with a 20 kHz ultrasonic processor. They preheated the reactor to 150 °C, then sonicated for 30 minutes as the temperature rose toward 180 °C. Their tests varied pulse mode, pressure, sawdust loading, and whether the liquid was water or diluted formic acid. Silent, stirred reactor treatments served as controls, and experiments were duplicated. Read the full study.

Structural changes were the clearest result
In hot-water tests, the strongest reported structural changes were associated with a 70:30 pulse mode and added pressure of 3 bar. Under formic-acid conditions, ultrasound-treated solids appeared finer and more disrupted than the starting sawdust or silent-treated solids. With 2.5% formic acid, ultrasound produced 23 percentage points more particles smaller than 150 μm than the corresponding silent experiment.
In a reported comparison using 2.5% formic acid, crystallinity fell from 56% with silent treatment to 50% with ultrasound—a reduction of 6 percentage points. These measurements describe specific conditions in this experiment, not a general performance guarantee for sawdust or other equipment.

Furfural yield did not improve over silent treatment
In extended runs, the researchers followed the initial treatment with a 30-minute hold at 180 °C. With ultrasound, furfural yields were 25%, 36%, and 43% at formic-acid concentrations of 1%, 2.5%, and 5%, respectively. The matched silent treatments yielded 29%, 36%, and 44%. In this comparison, higher acid concentration and the hold period mattered to yield; ultrasound did not produce a measured increase over silent treatment.
The study’s conclusion is therefore narrower than “ultrasound makes more furfural”: its clearest contribution was pretreatment of the solid fraction. The 43% ultrasound result at 5% formic acid was slightly below the 44% silent result.

How ultrasound-assisted alkaline pretreatment performed
Other studies have focused on removing lignin so that cellulose is more accessible to enzymes. Their results concern distinct feedstocks and process setups, so their percentages should not be ranked directly against one another.
Ultrasonic horn and bath
Gavrila and colleagues studied sawdust from furniture manufacturing using ultrasound-assisted alkaline pretreatment. They reported delignification of 68% with an ultrasonic horn and 57% with an ultrasonic bath. The goal was to improve access to cellulose for enzymatic hydrolysis and increase reducing-sugar production. These are results under that study’s optimized conditions, not universal removal rates. Delignification followed by enzymatic hydrolysis
Patil, Joshi, and Gogate examined ultrasound-assisted alkaline delignification followed by enzymatic hydrolysis. Their abstract reports about 1.25 times the delignification yield of the conventional process under optimized ultrasound-assisted conditions, with treatment time reduced by about four hours.
Recommended Free Tools
For the hydrolysis stage, they reported 7.46 mg/mL of reducing sugars after one hour at 4% substrate loading, 50 W ultrasound power, a 50% duty cycle, and 50 °C. A conventional stirring condition at 6% loading and 50 °C produced approximately the same concentration in three hours. Because substrate loading and process conditions differed, this is not a controlled, like-for-like comparison of ultrasound and stirring. Read the abstract.

What changes when ultrasound is combined with fungal treatment
A 2017 study paired ultrasound with the fungus Myrothecium verrucaria to degrade lignin in birch sawdust. The reported optimum used a material-to-liquid ratio of 1:20, 30 °C, four days, and pH 7. Lignin degradation was 67.95 ± 2.14% for the combined treatment, compared with 45.50 ± 2.12% for fungal treatment alone and 13.75 ± 0.66% for ultrasound alone. The result belongs to a biological-plus-ultrasound process; it is not evidence that ultrasound alone achieved the combined treatment’s performance. See the publisher record.
Why results vary between processes
Ultrasound’s effects depend on more than whether a reactor is switched on. Relevant variables include the sawdust feedstock and particle preparation, the process objective, the probe or bath design, power and pulse settings, temperature, pressure, treatment time, and any chemical or biological additions. The appropriate control matters too: comparisons are meaningful only when the non-ultrasound treatment is sufficiently matched.
The 2025 authors note that acoustic intensity is not uniform throughout a reactor: localized fields and dead zones can create uneven treatment. They also report that pressure affected delivered acoustic power and that measured acoustic power was lower at higher starting temperature. Under some conditions, lignin may condense or repolymerize, which can work against the intended outcome. These factors make settings process-specific rather than plug-and-play.
Can this be used at industrial scale?
The cited results are from laboratory studies. They do not establish commercial-scale throughput, costs, lifecycle benefits, or reproducibility across industrial equipment and sawdust sources. A laboratory probe sonifier in a heated, pressurized batch reactor is also not equivalent to a consumer ultrasonic cleaner.
The 2025 study identifies further questions about the degree of polymerization of soluble hemicellulose and possible uses for the residual solid. Those questions, alongside scale-up and process economics, remain open in the cited work.
