You can build a simple AI assistant in Termux with a short Python script and a hosted AI API. Termux runs the program on your Android phone; the API does the model work remotely, so you need an internet connection and an API credential. Check your provider’s current account requirements, available models, and pricing before making requests.
What you are building
The first version is a terminal chatbot: it reads a message, sends it to an AI service through the official Python client, prints the reply, and waits for another message. This is not an offline assistant. A locally run model is a separate route with different storage, memory, performance, and setup constraints; the instructions below focus on the hosted API approach.

Install Termux from one distribution source
Install Termux from an official supported distribution source, and install any Termux add-ons from that same source. The Termux project explains that the app and plugins must use APKs signed with the same key to work together; mixing distribution sources can therefore break installation or plugin interoperability. The project README describes full app-and-package support for Android 7 and later, and notes that Android may terminate processes under some conditions, including on Android 12 and later. Install Python and prepare the project

Open Termux and refresh its package metadata, then install Python using the current Termux package-management instructions. Package names and command syntax can change; consult the Termux packages project rather than assuming desktop Linux commands apply.

Check the installed interpreter with

Install the OpenAI library using the Python packaging approach recommended by the current Termux guidance. A project-specific virtual environment can help isolate dependencies when supported by your setup; do not assume every desktop virtual-environment workflow behaves identically in every Termux installation.

Set the API key without putting it in your script
Create an API key through your chosen provider, then make it available to the program as an environment variable or through another suitable local secret store. The OpenAI client reads OPENAI_API_KEY from the environment by default.
In a Termux shell, you can set the variable for the current session with export OPENAI_API_KEY='your-key-here'. Replace the example text locally; never publish a real key in a script, repository, screenshot, or tutorial. A variable set interactively may need to be set again in a new session. If you choose persistent storage, avoid shared or world-readable locations and follow your device’s security practices.

Create the chatbot script
Save the following as assistant.py. The model value is deliberately a placeholder: use a model identifier currently available to your account, as listed in the provider’s model documentation. No real API key belongs in the file.

The broad exception handler keeps the loop from crashing on a request error, but it is intentionally basic: the printed message may contain technical details, and it does not distinguish network failures, rate limits, or other API errors. For a public or shared tool, handle those cases deliberately and avoid displaying sensitive diagnostic information.

Run it and diagnose common failures

Start the script from the directory where you saved it using
python assistant.py. -
Enter a message at the
You:prompt. The script sends it to the API and prints the returned text. Type/quit,quit, orexitto stop. -
If the program says the key is missing, set

If Termux closes or the process stops while unattended, Android may have terminated it. The Termux project documents this as a possibility; do not treat background execution as guaranteed.
Add Android features only when needed
A text-only chatbot does not require Termux:API. If you want scripts to access Android functions, Termux:API provides a bridge through a companion app and helper package. Install the app and package from the same distribution source as Termux, then check the current supported command list in the Termux:API README. It is an optional extension, not part of the minimal chatbot.
