The service sets its audience, permissions and any expiration; some links work for anyone who receives or is forwarded the URL, while others require an organizational account or a named recipient. Check both who can open the link and what they can do, then use the service’s controls to set an expiration or revoke the link where available.
What a share link actually grants
A share link is a permission route to a file or folder. Its scope depends on the service and the settings chosen by the owner or administrator:

- Audience: whether access is open to anyone with the link, limited to an organization, or restricted to specific people.
- Actions: whether recipients can view, comment, edit or perform another permitted action.
- Duration: whether the link has an expiration date, and whether that option is available for the account and link type.
Microsoft Learn describes its SharePoint Anyone link as “a transferable, revocable secret key.” That description applies to Microsoft’s Anyone-link model: possession of the link can be enough to open the item, and the link can be passed to someone else. Can anyone with the link open your file?
It depends on the audience setting. An Anyone link can be used by whoever receives it, including someone it is forwarded to, and Microsoft says this link type does not require recipient authentication. It does not verify each recipient’s identity. Organization links generally restrict access to people in the relevant organization, while specific-people links are intended for named recipients. Google Drive offers a general-access choice as well as restricted sharing, and owners can assign Viewer, Commenter or Editor roles. Before sending a link, check the audience and role in the sharing controls rather than assuming the URL itself is private. Google Drive: Share files from Google Drive.
Does a share link expire?
There is no universal expiration rule. Some services support expiration for certain links or accounts; others may expose the option only under particular plan or administrator settings. Microsoft Graph supports an optional expirationDateTime for a link permission. Google says expiration dates are available to eligible work or school accounts. Dropbox says access through a shared link ends on its expiration date. Check the current sharing controls for the specific file and account before relying on an expiration.

How to limit or end access
Use the provider’s sharing or access-management controls to change the audience or role, set an expiration if offered, or remove the link. The precise interface differs, so look for the file’s sharing settings or manage-access view rather than relying on a generic menu path.

Removing a link revokes access through that link; it does not necessarily remove every other permission to the file. A person may still have direct access, another share link, or access inherited from a folder or organization. Microsoft specifically notes that users may retain other permissions after an Anyone link is deleted. Review all listed access routes if the goal is to remove a person’s access completely.
