These steps reduce memory demands; they cannot make a phone’s RAM unlimited. If the model still will not load or runs too slowly, try a smaller model or use hosted inference.
Why a model’s file size does not tell you whether it will run
A model file is stored on disk, but running the model requires working memory. The runtime must load model data into RAM, and the context—the conversation or other text the model is processing—also uses memory. Other apps and system activity compete for the phone’s available RAM.

The llama.cpp quantization documentation illustrates the difference with an 8B Llama 3.1 model: it lists 32.1 GB for the original model and 4.9 GB for a Q4_K_M quantized version. Those are model-size figures, not a guarantee that the quantized file will fit in available RAM or that 4.9 GB is the total memory needed to run it.
There is no single phone-RAM minimum established for every model and setup. The answer depends on the model, its quantization, runtime, context length, device, and what else is using memory.

Choose the right combination of model and runtime
Before downloading anything, identify the exact model you want, the quantized build available for it, the runtime that supports it, and your phone’s platform. A model file is useful only if the runtime can load that format on your device.
- Android: llama.cpp’s Android guidance documents a deployment route for compatible models. Google’s Android AICore is a separate platform service for supported on-device generative features, including Gemini Nano; it is not a general-purpose substitute for loading any model you choose.
- iPhone: Apple’s Core AI documentation describes on-device models, while its Core ML guidance on reducing model size covers size-reduction techniques. Check that the specific model and runtime support your device and software version.
These platform routes are not interchangeable. Confirm compatibility in the runtime or platform documentation before downloading a large file.

Use quantization to reduce the model footprint
Quantization represents model values at reduced precision, which can make a model smaller than its original form. The llama.cpp documentation lists different quantization methods with different sizes and performance characteristics. Smaller does not mean identical: output quality and speed can vary with the method, model, runtime, and phone.
Choose a quantized build that the selected runtime supports, and get it from a source you trust. Treat its listed file size as a useful first filter, not proof that the phone has enough working memory.

Set a modest context length first
Context length controls how much text the model can consider at once. A longer context can be useful for extended conversations or lengthy documents, but it adds to memory demands. Start with a modest setting, then increase it only if the phone remains stable and you need the extra capacity.
For its Android setup, llama.cpp suggests starting with a reasonable context such as 4096 and warns that memory can spike enough to kill the process. That is an example from the project’s guidance, not a universal best setting or a guarantee that a particular phone will handle it.

Install, test, and adjust on the phone you will use
- Check the model, runtime, and device combination. Confirm that the model format and quantization are supported by the runtime on your phone’s platform.
- Download a compatible quantized build. Check the model file size and leave storage space for the file; remember that storage does not replace RAM.
- Follow the runtime’s mobile setup instructions. On Android with llama.cpp, use the project’s documented Android deployment guidance. For platform services or other runtimes, follow their own instructions.
- Begin with a modest context length. Use the runtime’s setting for context and start low enough to test stability before trying longer conversations or documents.
- Try the tasks you actually care about. Check whether the model loads, responds at an acceptable pace, and stays stable during continued use. Results on another phone or a model’s file-size listing cannot establish how it will behave on yours.
- If it fails, reduce the demand before giving up. Lower the context length first; if the model still crashes or is too slow, try a smaller quantization or a smaller model.
Google’s AI Edge Portal describes benchmarking across more than 120 representative Android device types and identifies memory use and initialization as possible causes of freezes or crashes. That fleet figure is not a measure of every phone on the market; it reinforces why testing the intended model and settings on your own device matters.

Decide when local inference is not the right fit
If a suitable quantized model remains unstable or unacceptably slow after reducing context, use a smaller model or consider hosted inference. A cloud service can provide access to models too large for a phone, but it requires connectivity and its privacy terms, costs, and availability depend on the provider. Review those terms for the service you choose.

On-device inference can reduce reliance on server inference for supported workloads. Whether it works offline, and what data stays on the device, depends on the particular platform feature and runtime; check their documentation rather than assuming all mobile AI works the same way.

What will not solve a RAM limit
- More storage space: It can hold model files, but it does not provide the working memory needed to load and run them.
