AI image editing produces usable results when you treat it as one stage in a controlled process rather than a single prompt. Start by writing down where the image will appear and what it must communicate, then state explicitly what must stay unchanged. Make one scoped change at a time, inspect the output against the original, and finish any text, layout, or color problems in a conventional design or photo-editing tool. The sequence below applies whether you work in ChatGPT’s image features, Adobe Photoshop, or another editor, with the tool-specific details noted where they differ.
Set the brief before you write a prompt
Most weak AI edits trace back to a vague request. Before you type anything, write a short brief with four parts: the destination (a website hero, a product listing, a social post, a slide), the message the image has to carry, the elements that may change, and the elements that must stay fixed.

OpenAI’s guidance for image creation in ChatGPT, published in its OpenAI Academy material on April 10, 2026, says clear, descriptive prompts work well and that explicit preservation instructions help steer an edit. In practice, that means describing the subject, the action, the setting, the visual style, the framing, and any relevant light or material details, then naming the things that should not move.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Keep the bottle’s label, its exact shape, the reflections on its cap, and the camera angle unchanged. Lighting should stay soft from the upper left.” The second sentence does more work than the first, because it tells the tool what counts as failure.

Use reference images in a controlled way
When an edit combines several visual inputs, keep the set small. OpenAI’s guidance notes that a few reference images are easier to manage than a large collection, and that each reference should have a clearly stated role.
- Source photo: the image being edited. Its composition is the baseline.
- Style reference: supplies color, texture, or mood only. It should not contribute objects.
- Object reference: supplies one item to insert or match. Name that item precisely.
When you combine content, describe spatial relationships in plain terms, such as “the mug sits to the left of the laptop, on the same desk surface.” Vague placement is a common source of objects that float, overlap, or sit at the wrong scale.
Make one focused change at a time
The more elements you alter in one request, the harder it becomes to tell which change caused a problem. OpenAI recommends getting the core idea right first, then asking for a specific adjustment such as brighter exposure, a simpler background, or softer colors. Small, targeted revisions are easier to evaluate than broad, repeated rewrites of the entire request.

OpenAI also says that repeating key constraints across turns can help prevent visual drift, where a subject’s face, clothing, or proportions gradually change over successive edits. A practical habit is to restate the preservation sentence from your brief at the start of each revision request.
Constrain the edit region when the tool allows it
Whole-image prompting is the least controlled option. When a change is local, the better approach is to limit the area the tool can alter. Adobe’s documentation for Photoshop describes selection-based Generative Fill, in which a selected area focuses the generated change, and generative layers, which hold generated variants separately from the original pixels. Adobe’s help material says generated content on generative layers can be revisited and reversed without affecting the underlying image.
Adobe also documents the AI Assisted Editor in Photoshop on desktop as a beta mode. According to Adobe’s Photoshop Help FAQ, last updated September 29, 2026, this mode produces a flattened copy for prompt-based edits. That makes it a different workflow from generative layers, and the difference matters if you need to go back and adjust the result later.

| Approach | Scope of change | Editable after the edit? | Best used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whole-image prompt editing (for example, in ChatGPT) | Entire image is regenerated or modified from the request | Depends on the tool and export format; treat the output as a new image | Overall style shifts, concept images, simple replacements with clear preservation instructions |
| Selection-based Generative Fill in Photoshop | Only the selected area | Generated content is on the layer or area you created, so it can be adjusted or reversed | Adding, removing, or extending a specific object or background section |
| Generative layer in Photoshop | Generated variants held on a separate layer | Yes; variants can be revisited, and the original image is not affected | Exploring several options without committing to one |
| AI Assisted Editor in Photoshop desktop (beta) | Prompt-based edit to the image | No; the workflow produces a flattened copy | Quick edits where a flattened output is acceptable |
Availability of Firefly-powered features varies by region. Adobe’s FAQ states that these features are unavailable in certain territories, so confirm access for your account and location before you plan a project around them.
Inspect the output instead of trusting the prompt
A well-written prompt does not guarantee an accurate result. Review every AI edit against the original at full size, not only as a thumbnail. The checks below are editorial guidance based on the kinds of errors generated edits commonly show; neither OpenAI nor Adobe publishes an error rate for these checks, so treat them as a review routine rather than a measured standard.
- Edges: look for halos, smeared outlines, or hair and fabric boundaries that no longer match the original.
- Object geometry: confirm that handles, buttons, logos, and joints connect correctly and keep their proportions.
- Shadows and light direction: the new area should receive light from the same direction as the untouched areas, with shadows falling the same way.
- Perspective: check that horizon lines, tabletop planes, and receding edges agree across the seam between edited and original pixels.
- Repeated patterns: tiled textures, fences, and rows of objects often change count or spacing.
- Faces, skin, and product details: check eyes, teeth, hands, labels, and any printed text or packaging detail against the source.
- Seams: compare the boundary of the edited region with the untouched image at 100 percent zoom.
If a check fails, revise the scoped request once with the specific defect named, rather than regenerating from a new, longer prompt. Repeated full-image regeneration tends to introduce new problems in areas that were already correct.

Finish in a precision tool when the job requires it
AI generation is a poor final stage for dense layouts and for images that carry heavy text. OpenAI’s guidance recommends polishing in design tools in those cases. Text rendered inside a generated image may be misspelled, misaligned, or inconsistent in size, and layouts with tight margins or grid systems need manual control.
Use conventional tools for final corrections: levels and curves for exposure and contrast, selective color or color balance for palette matching, healing or clone tools for small artifacts, and your design application’s type and layout controls for any words that must be exact. Adobe’s documentation presents these conventional Photoshop tools alongside its generative features, which is consistent with treating AI as one step among several.
Choose a workflow by comparing five axes
When you compare options, the useful questions are not about which vendor produces the best images in general. Compare each workflow on these five axes:

Left-handed friendly, and you just need to flip the tablet and adjust the settings in the driver. Please note: H640P does NOT support iPhone/iPad.
- Move Beyond the Mouse: Huion Inspiroy H640P is a pen tablet that replaces your mouse for more natural, precise control. Freehand draw, take notes, or even play OSU—everything you do with a mouse, you can do better with a pen. The precise tip makes it ideal for detailed photo editing, graphic design, or signing PDF. Meanwhile, the ergonomic pen grip helps you avoid the strain that comes from hours of using a mouse.
| Axis | What to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Whole-image versus local region | Can the edit be confined to one area? | Local edits protect composition and untouched details. |
| Editable layers versus flattened output | Can you revisit or reverse the change later? | Flattened output makes later corrections harder. |
| Control over composition and untouched details | How precisely can you keep fixed elements unchanged? | Fixed elements are where most unwanted changes appear. |
| Text-heavy layout or production finishing | Does the project need exact type or print-ready layout? | Those tasks usually need a conventional design tool at the end. |
| Regional access | Is the feature available in your territory and plan? | Feature availability can differ by region and by product tier. |
Vendor documentation describes how each feature works; it does not establish that one tool outperforms another. If you are choosing between options, run the same brief through each and apply the same inspection checklist.
Check permissions and disclosure before you publish
Before an AI-edited image goes live, confirm the rules that apply to that specific image and use. OpenAI states that attribution is optional for images generated with its service, and that usage should follow your organization’s guidelines and its usage policies. That statement does not answer client contract terms, platform labeling rules, licensing for any source photo you started from, or the legal requirements of your jurisdiction. Source-photo rights still apply to the original image even when the edit is generated, and a client or platform may require disclosure regardless of what the vendor allows.
Before publishing, confirm the following:
- You hold the rights to the source photo and any reference image you used.
- The image does not misrepresent a real product, person, place, or event in a way your audience would consider material.
- Any text inside the image is correct, legible at the size it will be displayed, and matches your brand or copy.
- The version you publish is the one you inspected, at the resolution and file format it will be delivered in.
- Your client, platform, or employer has no disclosure requirement that applies to this image.
Feature names, beta status, and availability in Adobe’s and OpenAI’s products change over time. Check the current help page for the product version and region you use before you rely on a specific mode or setting.
