How this guide defines “budget” and the market
This guide is written for buyers in the United States and uses a ceiling of $300 for the phone itself. Prices are compared on an unlocked basis unless a source states otherwise. Carrier-locked phones, prepaid bundles, and trade-in offers are covered separately below, because they can change the real cost of a phone by more than the sticker difference between models.

Check the exact model and carrier variant first
“5G” on a box or spec sheet does not tell you whether a phone will work on your carrier. The same model name can be sold in several versions, with different network bands and different sales channels. Before you compare prices, confirm the following.
- Find the model number on the phone under Settings > About phone, and compare it with the number printed on the box or the retailer listing.
- Check your carrier’s device compatibility page for that exact model number, not just the model name.
- Confirm which 5G bands the model supports. Low-band and mid-band 5G support differ by carrier, and a phone can connect to 5G on one network and fall back to LTE on another.
- Confirm the storage size. A 128GB unit and a 64GB unit of the same name can have different prices and different listings.
If you are buying the Galaxy A17 5G, do not assume the AT&T SKU and the unlocked 128GB SKU are interchangeable. They are separate listings, and the AT&T version may come with carrier conditions that the unlocked version does not have.

Unlocked price versus carrier offers
An unlocked phone is usually simpler to evaluate: you pay the device price once and choose any compatible carrier. Carrier offers can lower the upfront cost, but they often come with conditions. Read these before you buy.

- Required plan: Some device credits apply only to a specific monthly plan or to a plan of a certain size.
- Lock or credit period: Promotional credits are often spread over many months. Leaving early or cancelling service can mean paying the remaining balance.
- Activation and eligibility: New-line or switcher requirements can exclude existing customers.
- Total cost: Add up the device payments and the plan cost over the period you expect to keep the phone, and compare that with the unlocked price plus your current plan.
Software support is part of the price
A budget phone that receives only a short run of security and operating-system updates costs more per year of use than its sticker suggests. The sources used for this guide did not establish update commitments for these four models, so you need to check each manufacturer’s published update policy for the exact model number before buying. Look for the number of Android version upgrades promised and the date through which security updates are scheduled. If the manufacturer does not publish a date, treat the support period as unknown.

Match the phone to how you will use it
Four factors separate budget phones in practice: the screen, performance and storage, battery life, and camera. Weigh them against your own use rather than choosing the phone with the best single spec.
Screen
Check screen type, size, brightness, and refresh rate on the manufacturer’s spec page for your exact model. The sources here did not establish these values for each model, so compare them directly on the official listing. A higher refresh rate matters most for scrolling and gaming; brightness matters most if you use the phone outdoors.

Performance and storage
Everyday tasks such as messaging, navigation, and web browsing run on nearly any current budget chipset. Heavier use, such as large games or many apps kept open, shows the difference. Storage is a separate question: confirm how much space is free after the operating system is installed, and whether the phone supports a memory card if you need more.

If battery life is your main concern, the two Motorola results are the only battery figures in this guide, and they come from one publication’s test. Tom’s Guide reports 18 hours 30 minutes for the Moto G Power (2026) and more than 19 hours for the Moto G (2026). Use those as an indication of the models’ relative standing in that test, not as a guaranteed result on your own use.

Camera
Budget cameras are usually weakest in low light. If you take many photos indoors or at night, look for sample photos taken in dim conditions in reviews that show full-resolution images, and judge the results by noise and detail rather than by the megapixel count. The sources used here did not provide camera comparisons for these models.
