A PDF Reader Where Every Note Remembers Its Page

A PDF note is only useful if you can return to the passage it describes. Here is how page-linked notes work, where comments, sticky notes, and copied annotations differ, and what breaks when pages change.

A PDF note is only useful if you can find the passage it describes. A reader where every note keeps a path back to its page lets you return to the context of a note instead of scrolling through the document to rediscover it. Whether that works in practice depends on how a given app models a note: as a comment drawn onto a page, as a sticky object placed on it, or as an annotation copied into a separate note with a page link attached. Those models behave differently when you search, export, or edit the file, so it helps to separate them before judging any reader.

What “remembering the page” has to cover

A note that truly keeps its page needs four things to hold together:

  • A page identity. The app has to know which page a note belongs to, not just where it appears on screen.
  • A position on that page. Some notes are tied to a rectangle or point, so the app must also store where the note sits.
  • A return path. From the note, you should be able to jump to the page and see the surrounding text or annotation.
  • Survival. The page link should still be valid after you export, move the file, or change its pages.

Most PDF features that look similar only satisfy some of these. The sections below use three official sources to show how.

Three kinds of PDF notes

“PDF note” is used for three different things, and they are easy to confuse.

Comments placed directly on the page

Adobe’s help article “Add comments with sticky notes in Acrobat” (last updated 23 September 2025) describes a text-box comment created by drawing on the page. The instruction is: “Drag a rectangle where you want to add the text box on the page.” The comment is therefore anchored to a location on a specific page, and it is part of the page view rather than a separate document. The same article is about sticky-note-style comments, so what you see on the page is the comment itself.

Sticky notes as movable objects

Goodnotes’ support article “Add sticky notes to your notes” (publication date not shown) describes sticky notes that can be placed, moved, resized, collapsed, and expanded. This is a different model from a comment: the note is an object you position, and its state (expanded or collapsed) changes how it appears. It is useful for marking a spot, but the note’s relationship to the underlying page depends on where you place it.

Annotations copied into a note with a page link

Zotero’s documentation, “Zotero PDF Reader and Note Editor” (last updated 5 May 2026), describes a third model. “When you add an annotation to a note, it will add both an annotation and a citation by default.” The annotation is copied into a note, and the citation includes a link back to the PDF page. This is the closest match to a note that “remembers its page,” because the note carries the reference with it, independent of the reader window.

How do I get back to the page where I made this note?

For notes that carry a page link, the return path is the link itself. Zotero’s documentation describes a “Show on Page” action for returning to context when the reader supports it. Treat “when supported” as a real condition: the action is not described as universal across every PDF reader, so check the feature in the app you use before relying on it.

For comments and sticky notes placed directly on a page, the note already sits on the page, so returning to it means scrolling to that page. The risk is that a note on a dense page is easy to lose. A reader that remembers the page should also let you see the note’s page number from the note itself, not only from the page it appears on.

Can I see my PDF notes with their page numbers?

The official sources reviewed here do not establish that every app provides a single overview of all notes with page numbers attached. Zotero’s documented model, in which annotations are copied into notes with page links, is the one most likely to support a list-style view, because the note is a text object. Adobe’s and Goodnotes’ sticky-note descriptions focus on placing and formatting notes on the page, and their help articles do not describe a page-numbered overview. If you need an overview, confirm it in the specific app’s help before assuming it exists.

What exports keep your notes

Export is where many note systems lose context. Goodnotes’ documentation says expanded sticky notes appear in PDF or image exports, while collapsed notes export as icons. A collapsed note therefore carries less text into an exported file than an expanded one, and a reader who receives the export may see only an icon. If the note’s content matters outside the app, expand it before exporting.

Zotero takes a different path. Its documentation says annotations are stored in its database and can be exported into PDFs with embedded annotations. The export is an action you take, so an annotation that has not been exported is not in the PDF file. See Zotero’s explanation of why annotations are stored in its database for the storage model behind this.

What happens when the document changes

A page link is only as reliable as the page it points to. Zotero’s reader documentation warns that deleting, reordering, or rotating pages outside the reader can cause annotations to show up at the wrong page or at the wrong position in its built-in reader. Zotero’s PDF reader documentation presents this as a limitation of its own reader, and it does not say how other readers behave under the same edits.

For any reader that claims notes remember their page, this is the test that matters most. Ask what happens when a page is inserted before the note, when a page is rotated, and when a page is removed. A design that stores only a page number is more fragile than one that also stores the note’s position and surrounding text.

Where the notes are stored

Storage determines whether notes travel with the file. Zotero stores its own annotations in its database rather than writing them into the PDF, and exports them when you ask. Zotero’s sync documentation, “Do annotations sync?” (date not shown), also explains that annotations from third-party software sync when that software saves them to the PDF file. Those are two separate paths: Zotero-created annotations live in Zotero’s database, while third-party annotations depend on what the other program writes into the file. If you move between tools, check which path your notes take.

Checklist for judging any PDF reader’s notes

  • Does a note store its page and its position, or only one of them?
  • Can you jump from the note to the page, and is that action available in every view you use?
  • Can you find notes by text, and can you see their page numbers in one place?
  • Do notes survive export, and is a collapsed or hidden note exported with its content?
  • Where is the note stored: inside the PDF, in an app database, or in a separate note?
  • What happens to note links after you insert, delete, rotate, or reorder pages?

A reader that answers these questions in its documentation, with the page link intact after edits, gives notes the context they need. The three sources above show that the answers vary by model, so the right choice depends on whether you need notes that stay inside the file, notes that live in a library, or notes you can review on the page.

  • Dark, gray, or wrongfully believed low resolution screen : All Eink products used Kaleido 3 color e-ink technology, which currently has inherent limitations and share the same darker or grayer screen than LCD/LED ones. This is a characteristic of all e-ink products, not a defect. If it doesn't meet your expectations, you may return the product under our return policy. However, please note this is not considered a product fault.
  • Over 99% of mobile apps are optimized for LCD/OLED screens with: High refresh rate expectations; Color-rich interfaces; Animation-heavy designs; These design choices conflict with E Ink's natural strengths in static content display.Energy Efficiency Trade-off‌: E Ink relies on electrophoretic particles that physically move to form images, resulting in slower refresh rates, makes it inherently unsuitable for conventional app interfaces designed for always-powered displays.
