In a 2026 study, researchers used a gold nanogap and machine learning to distinguish amino-acid mirror-image forms in meteorite and desert-soil extracts. It is a promising analytical approach, not a flight-ready sensor or a discovery of alien life.
What the new method detects
Amino acids—the building blocks used by life on Earth—can occur in two mirror-image forms, called L and D. The new method looks for those forms’ electrical signatures. It does not detect organisms directly; it measures amino acids and classifies their identity and handedness.

The peer-reviewed study, “Chiral discrimination of amino acids in meteorite and desert soil extracts via single-molecule nanogap conductance,” was published in Nature Communications, volume 17, article 10274, on October 5, 2026. How the sensor works
The device has an adjustable gap between gold nanowires. As molecules pass through that nanogap, they modulate an electron-tunneling current, creating current-versus-time waveforms. Machine-learning models then classify the waveforms by amino-acid identity and chirality. The reported method does not require optical measurements or chiral recognition molecules.

- Hach 2254069 Amino Acid F Reagent Powder Pillows, 10 mL, (Pack of 100):
The authors say the differences between waveforms are consistent with transient interactions between molecules and the junction. They have not established a single definitive explanation: local junction structure, molecular orientation, temporary adsorption or coordination, and electrostatic interactions may also affect the signals. Further experimental and theoretical work is needed.
What the accuracy figures mean
The study reports different performance figures for different analytical tasks. They should not be read as an overall probability of detecting life.

| Task | Reported result | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| Distinguishing L and D forms of individual amino acids | Over 80% accuracy | Classification of individual enantiomers under the study’s reported conditions. |
| Blind identification of amino-acid identity and chirality | Greater than 50% accuracy | A blind test involving 39 amino acids. |
| Quantifying mixed samples | Greater than 66% accuracy | Analysis of mixtures containing four amino acids with different chiral compositions. |
These figures apply to the specific classification or mixture task named in each row. None is a measure of how accurately the method finds extraterrestrial life.

What the meteorite and soil tests show
The team analyzed extracts from the Murchison meteorite and Atacama Desert soil, focusing on a targeted panel of 11 amino acids. For that panel, the resulting compositions captured major features also seen with liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS). The authors also discuss background effects and low-abundance signals.

This is evidence that the method can analyze prepared extracts from chemically complex samples in a laboratory. It does not show that the device can process an unprepared sample collected on another planet, or that it is generally superior to LC–MS. The comparison reported in the paper is limited to the samples and results studied.
Could it fit inside a future spacecraft?
Possibly, as a future application—but the available results do not establish a spacecraft instrument. The paper presents the method as a foundation for future astrobiology work. The sources do not give a flight-ready design or establish spacecraft mass and power requirements, radiation tolerance, mission selection, or flight qualification. A compact future implementation is a prospect, not a demonstrated capability.

Why amino-acid handedness matters—and what it cannot prove
Life on Earth uses amino acids with a strong preference for one handedness in proteins, so measuring chirality can contribute to the search for biological patterns. But an amino-acid measurement alone is not proof of life: the sensor identifies chemical signals, and interpreting their origin requires context and other evidence. The study tests an analytical technique; it does not report evidence that life exists beyond Earth.

- Accurate Arsenic Water Test Kit - Designed to detect arsenic levels in water with a testing range of 0–0.5 ppm (0–500 ppb). The reading scale includes 0.01, 0.025, 0.1, 0.25, and 0.5 ppm. To convert ppm to ppb, simply multiply by 1,000. The color on the chart changes from light to dark, allowing for clear and easy interpretation of results.
- Easy-to-Follow Testing Process - Please read the instructions carefully before use. To begin, pour 100ml of your water sample into the provided reaction bottle. Add the reagents as directed and mix well. Bend the test strip and secure it in the cap so that the reactive pad is exposed to the gas inside the bottle—do not submerge the strip in the liquid. After 30 minutes, compare the test strip to the color chart on the bottle to determine the arsenic level.
- Versatile Applications - This arsenic test kit is suitable for a variety of water sources. Whether you're testing home tap water, private well water, or water in outdoor, agricultural, or industrial settings, it offers reliable and convenient performance wherever you need it.
- What's Included - Arsenic test kit provides materials for five complete tests. It includes a reusable reaction bottle, one bottle of multi-use Reagent I, five single-use tubes of Reagent II and Reagent III, a vial with five arsenic test strips, and five pairs of disposable gloves.
- Safety Note - Always perform the test in a well-ventilated area. Do not touch the reactive pad on the test strips. Use the included gloves during testing, and be sure to read the full instructions before getting started.
