Infineon’s 2024 Silicon Valley OktoberTech showcase brought 92 demonstrations and approximately 600 attendees to the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. Organized around mobility, energy and IoT, the October event presented Infineon’s technologies as connected application systems rather than as an isolated list of component launches. The accompanying discussion with Maher Matta, then president for the Americas, also put 8-inch gallium-nitride (GaN) manufacturing and the role of Infineon’s Americas organization in focus.

These figures and descriptions come from EE Times’ November 26, 2024 event recap. The recap does not provide a complete demo catalog, product specifications or independent performance measurements.

What OktoberTech is—and what it is not

“OktoberTech” is a technology-showcase name modeled on Oktoberfest, reflecting Infineon’s German roots. In the EE Times account, the Silicon Valley edition had been held for roughly eight years by 2024. It is best understood as an application-focused demonstration event: engineers, customers, partners and industry observers can see how power, control, sensing, connectivity and security technologies fit into working systems.

That makes it different from a conventional trade show, where many vendors exhibit side by side; a formal product-launch conference centered on release announcements; or an investor and earnings event. Despite the Oktoberfest reference, it is not a public beer festival or consumer entertainment event.

When and where the 2024 showcase took place

Infineon held the 2024 Silicon Valley OktoberTech showcase in October at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California, according to the event recap published on November 26, 2024. The source does not establish an exact day, so a more specific date would be unwarranted.

What was demonstrated

Reported element What the source establishes
Demonstrations EE Times reported 92 demos.
Attendance Approximately 600 people attended.
Market structure The demos were organized around mobility, energy and IoT.
Complete inventory Not stated; the recap does not publish all 92 demonstrations.

The count should be treated as a reported event figure, not an independently audited total. Without Infineon’s program or individual demo sheets, it would be misleading to name particular products, partners or customer deployments as confirmed OktoberTech exhibits.

Mobility

In a system-level reading, mobility includes vehicle electrification, automotive power management, motor control, sensing, connectivity and embedded computing. Those functions depend on one another: a traction or auxiliary power stage must work with control electronics, sensors, communications and safety mechanisms. The event’s mobility label therefore says more about the application domain than about any single part number.

Energy

Energy systems bring together power conversion, charging, renewable generation, storage, monitoring and efficiency. Semiconductor choices affect switching behavior, thermal design, protection and control across the complete power path. The event structure suggests that Infineon wanted visitors to evaluate those interactions rather than view a transistor or module in isolation.

IoT

IoT systems combine sensors, microcontrollers, connectivity, security and increasingly local or edge processing. Their requirements overlap with mobility and energy: secure communications, low-power operation, reliable control and the ability to manage data at the edge. This overlap is why the three themes are more useful as a map of application platforms than as three sealed product categories.

The 8-inch GaN discussion

The most prominent technical thread in the available coverage is Infineon’s 8-inch gallium-nitride technology. In the accompanying interview, Matta discussed where the company was seeing traction, why he viewed GaN as important in the United States and how the Americas organization supported the business. The interview is available from EE Times on YouTube.

Why wafer size matters

An 8-inch wafer is a manufacturing format, not a device specification. A larger wafer can potentially produce more dies per processed wafer and improve wafer-level economics or capacity. Whether it actually reduces unit cost depends on yield, equipment utilization, device layout, packaging, testing, qualification and sustained demand.

GaN is relevant to high-frequency power conversion because its material properties can support fast switching and compact power designs. That makes it an important technology context for chargers and adapters, data-center power supplies, automotive and industrial converters, and renewable-energy or storage equipment. These are industry applications, not a confirmed list of OktoberTech demonstrations.

What the recap does not establish

  • GaN voltage, current, switching-frequency, resistance or thermal ratings
  • Manufacturing yield, capacity, cost or equipment utilization
  • Customer names, production qualifications or shipping status
  • Specific end products using the 8-inch process
  • Measured efficiency, reliability or competitive benchmarks

Matta’s view that GaN has “a big play” in the U.S. is an executive assessment. It should not be treated as independent market-size data, and wafer diameter alone cannot establish performance or commercial readiness.

Infineon’s Americas organization

At the time of the event, Infineon’s Americas region covered the United States, Canada and Mexico. EE Times reported that the organization had grown to more than 5,000 employees through three acquisitions. That was a late-2024 figure and should not be read as Infineon’s current 2026 headcount.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Matta described the region as both an R&D hub and a source of insight into U.S. technology and customer trends. That positioning helps explain why a Silicon Valley showcase matters: it gives a globally oriented semiconductor company a venue close to software, systems, startups, automakers, energy companies and research communities. It also lets the company present regional engineering and customer engagement as part of its broader development effort.

Infineon’s current company information lists GaN within a wider power portfolio that also includes silicon carbide, MOSFETs, IGBTs, power modules, gate drivers and power-conversion products. That taxonomy is useful context, but it does not prove that every category appeared at the 2024 event. See Infineon’s company and product information for the current organization.

What the event says about semiconductor strategy

OktoberTech’s significance lies in its breadth. A portfolio spanning power semiconductors, automotive electronics, energy systems, connectivity and IoT is easiest to understand when shown as a complete application: power conversion feeding a load, sensors reporting conditions, controllers making decisions, connectivity moving data and security protecting the system.

That is an analysis of the event’s stated structure, not a claim that Infineon published a single formal thesis for all 92 demos. The structure nevertheless reflects a broader industry shift from selling standalone components toward helping customers design platforms and subsystems. For engineers, that framing can expose interface, thermal, control and security trade-offs that a component data sheet cannot show.

Questions the public recap leaves open

  • Which products, prototypes or partner systems made up the 92 demonstrations?
  • Which exhibits were shipping products, samples, development technology or research projects?
  • Were any performance results measured publicly, and under what conditions?
  • Which customers or deployments, if any, were associated with the demos?
  • What qualification, reliability and production milestones applied to the 8-inch GaN technology?
  • Which three acquisitions were included in the reported Americas headcount growth?

Answering those questions requires Infineon demo materials, product documentation or direct company confirmation. The event recap alone cannot support a product recommendation, a competitive ranking or a conclusion about mass-market availability.

Bottom line

Infineon’s 2024 OktoberTech event was a large, application-oriented Silicon Valley showcase: 92 reported demonstrations, about 600 attendees and three connected themes—mobility, energy and IoT. Its strategic message was the integration of power, sensing, control, connectivity and security at system level. The 8-inch GaN discussion made the event particularly relevant to power-semiconductor watchers, but the available coverage does not establish device performance, production scale or commercial readiness. The most defensible takeaway is therefore about breadth and direction, not a catalog of launched products.
