A JSON Formatter’s Share Button Can Leak Data—Here’s How to Check

A formatter can process JSON locally and still send analytics or create an exposing share link. Here’s how to inspect each data path safely.

A “Share” click does not prove that pasted JSON went to analytics. A formatter may process the text in your browser, send a separate analytics event, and generate a share link through a third data path. Without the incident’s network trace or event record, the specific leak in the title remains an allegation to verify—not an established fact.

Was pasted JSON sent to analytics?

Possibly, but the button label alone cannot answer that. A formatter can handle JSON locally and still send analytics about page views or interactions. Conversely, an analytics event can record that someone clicked Share without containing the JSON itself.

For example, one vendor says its formatter processes data client-side while its analytics integration collects pages viewed, approximate location, and general device and browser details, and says it does not receive the JSON. That is the vendor’s disclosure, not independent verification of the implementation or of the incident described here: jsonformatter.org privacy policy.

Another formatter describes optional telemetry limited to tool, action, status, and coarse duration and size buckets, excluding editor input and output. This is an example of a constrained event design, not evidence about the unidentified formatter in the title: jsonformatters.org privacy disclosure.

To establish whether a particular event included content, inspect the request payload and the event as received by the analytics service. A privacy policy or a “client-side” label is not a substitute for checking deployed behavior.

Does client-side processing mean the data never leaves your browser?

No. It describes one operation: where the formatter processes the JSON. Analytics, error reporting, and sharing may be separate operations with separate destinations. Treat each as an independent data flow: the JSON-processing path, the analytics path, and the share-link path.

Google documents that Analytics traffic is encrypted in transit. Encryption protects data while it travels; it does not determine whether an event should include pasted JSON in the first place: Google Analytics data collection and security.

Can a share link expose JSON even if the server never receives it?

Yes. Some share links place encoded content in the URL fragment—the portion after #. A browser does not ordinarily include that fragment in the HTTP request to the URL’s server, but the URL itself can still be copied, saved in browser history or bookmarks, or sent to email and social platforms. A reviewed formatter policy specifically identifies those exposure paths: jsonformatter.org privacy policy and JSON Formatter.

A server-backed share link is different: creating or opening it may transmit content to a service that stores it. In either design, encoding is not encryption. Anyone who obtains an encoded URL may be able to recover its contents, so do not use a share link for secrets unless the implementation’s protection has been verified and is appropriate for that data.

How do you check what the Share button sends?

  1. Use synthetic input. Create harmless sample JSON with recognizable dummy text. Do not test with credentials, personal information, or production data.
  2. Open browser developer tools. In the browser’s Developer Tools, select the Network panel, enable preservation of the request log if available, then click Share.
  3. Inspect relevant requests. Check each request’s destination, method, event name, and payload or properties. Look for the sample text, encoded or transformed versions of it, and fields that could reveal it indirectly. Check URLs as well as request bodies.
  4. Trace the event in code. Find the code that constructs the Share analytics event and any shared analytics helpers. Check automatic page, exception, and logging instrumentation too: content can leak through an error message or logging context even if the explicit event is clean.
  5. Check the resulting link separately. Determine whether the JSON is sent to a server for storage or included in a URL fragment. Inspect the generated URL using only the synthetic sample.
  6. Verify what analytics receives. After changing the implementation, repeat the test and check the received event using synthetic input. Confirm the JSON does not appear in the event, diagnostics, or a link unless that behavior is intended.

Do not conclude that a payload is safe merely because a request is encrypted, the input is processed locally, or the text is encoded in a URL. Those facts answer different questions.

What should a safer Share implementation send?

Keep analytics separate from editor contents. If an event is necessary, use an allowlist of coarse fields that support a defined purpose—for example, action, tool, status, and broad size or duration buckets. Avoid exact text, secrets, and reversible derivatives of the input. The optional telemetry described by jsonformatters.org is one example of this approach, not a universal standard: jsonformatters.org privacy disclosure.

Review the share mechanism on its own merits. A server-backed link involves transmission and storage; a fragment-based link can avoid sending the fragment in the ordinary HTTP request, but it remains a shareable URL that may be stored or forwarded. Make the destination and behavior understandable to users, and do not treat encoded content as protected content.

Minimize collection before relying on safeguards around it. Google Chrome’s modern web privacy guidance puts the principle plainly: “If you don’t have the data, you can’t lose it.” Google Chrome privacy and security guidance.

Finally, document what is collected, who receives it, retention, and any consent or opt-out behavior accurately. Vendor disclosures differ, and policy statements can diverge from deployed code; verify the live implementation rather than generalizing from another formatter’s claims.
