A 200 OK response means a request received a successful HTTP response; it does not prove that a web page contains the right content, renders correctly, or works for visitors. A blank document, an error message, or content that appears only after JavaScript runs can all sit behind a green status. Check the response, the rendered page, and whether the URL is supposed to exist.
What does 200 OK actually tell you?
200 OK is an HTTP success status, but its precise meaning depends partly on the request method. It describes the response to a particular request—not the overall health or usefulness of a web page. See MDN’s reference for HTTP 200.

For Google Search, a 2xx response makes a URL eligible for further processing, but does not guarantee indexing. Google states, “For Google Search, an HTTP 2xx (success) status code doesn’t guarantee indexing.” Google’s HTTP status guidance explains how status codes affect crawling.
How can a page return 200 but still be broken?
The status and the page content are different things. A server can successfully return an HTML document even if that document is empty, displays an error, or fails to include the requested information. Google may treat a URL like this as a soft 404: the response is successful, but the page signals that the content does not exist.

- ONE MONITOR, TWO ROOMS — Place one camera by the bed and another in the living room, then switch between Camera 1 and Camera 2 views on the same handheld monitor. This 2-camera elderly monitor setup helps caregivers check the places a loved one uses most without carrying separate screens. Each view is selected individually on the monitor; it does not show both camera feeds at the same time.
- NO WI-FI SETUP, PRIVATE IN-HOME CONNECTION — This CallToU elderly monitor works as a dedicated adult monitor and senior monitor, using a direct 2.4GHz FHSS link instead of Wi-Fi. No router, app, internet, cloud account, or monthly service required. Plug in the camera, power on the monitor, and place the call remote within reach for easy local monitoring at home.
- EXPRESS NEEDS WITHOUT SPEAKING — More than a basic call button, this caregiver call button works as a wireless caregiver pager and call bell for elderly at home. Four icon-marked, tactile buttons identify General Help, Help Turning Over, Bathroom Help, and Water Request; the matching icon appears on the monitor. Every front button and the rear SOS trigger a continuous alert until acknowledged. No fall detection—manual press required.
- SEE, HEAR & RESPOND FROM ANOTHER ROOM — This baby monitor for elderly care uses live 720P video and two-way audio to check whether a loved one is resting comfortably, then speak without entering the room. Infrared night vision and 2×/4× zoom help with quiet nighttime check-ins. Its portable 2.8-inch screen is a room monitor for elderly care, designed to view status—not high-definition detail surveillance.
- MOVE AROUND THE HOME WHILE STAYING CONNECTED — Carry the monitor to another room, downstairs, or while doing everyday chores; camera-to-monitor range reaches up to 660 ft / 200 m in open areas. Indoor range varies with walls, metal, appliances, aquariums, and other wireless devices. Right after unboxing and powering on, test coverage throughout your home. Keep the rear camera antenna unfolded and upright, and keep the call remote within 32 ft / 10 m of the camera.
Google lists several situations that can lead to a soft 404, including an empty page, an error message, a broken database connection, an internal search with no results, or missing JavaScript. These are examples, not a claim that every 200 response is defective or that every soft 404 has the same cause. Google notes that returning success while showing or suggesting an error can create a poor user experience. Google’s crawl troubleshooting guidance describes soft 404s and their causes.
Why JavaScript can hide the problem
Some sites initially send an app shell: HTML that provides the structure for the application but does not yet contain the page’s actual content. JavaScript must run in the browser to populate the page. In that situation, a successful response for the initial HTML does not establish that the intended content appeared after rendering.

Check both the response body and the rendered page. If the body is only a shell, look at the page after its scripts have run; if the expected content is still missing, the issue may be in the rendering path, a data request, or the application’s handling of an error. The Google guidance relevant here is about crawling and rendering, not a universal test for every browser interaction.

- Confirm the response status. Check the request for the page URL and note the HTTP status. A 200 tells you that request received a successful response, not that the page is correct.
- Inspect the response body. Look for the intended page content, an empty document, an error message, or a generic fallback. A body that says the requested page is missing can conflict with a 200 status.
- Check the rendered page. Load the page in a browser with JavaScript enabled and see whether the expected content appears. This matters for JavaScript-driven sites whose initial HTML is an app shell.
- If the concern is Google crawling or indexing, use Search Console diagnostics. Check how Google classifies the URL and distinguish a real 404 from a soft 404. Google’s crawl troubleshooting documentation supports this workflow; it does not establish a universal test for all site features.
- Decide whether the URL should exist. If the content is available at that URL, fix the empty or erroneous response or the rendering problem. If the page was permanently removed and has no replacement or equivalent, return a proper 404 instead.
When should a missing page return 404?
If a URL genuinely no longer exists and there is no replacement or equivalent page, Google recommends returning a proper 404 response. That accurately signals that the requested resource is unavailable. Do not send every missing URL to the homepage or serve fake content as though the requested page still exists; those approaches obscure what happened to the URL. See Google Search Console Help on invalid and deleted URLs.
