A .git Folder Is Not Just Data: Forgejo Template RCE (CVE-2026-89094) and How to Audit Your Instance

CVE-2026-89094 arose because Forgejo template expansion could recreate .git after an earlier deletion. Check your release line, upgrade, and investigate exposed hosts carefully.

If your Forgejo instance is running an affected release, upgrade to a current supported patched version. CVE-2026-89094 affects Forgejo versions before 16.0.4; the September 10, 2026 release reporting also identifies 15.0.8 as the fix for the 15.x line. The flaw let template expansion recreate a .git directory after Forgejo had removed one, allowing a later Git initialization to treat attacker-controlled files as repository metadata.

What CVE-2026-89094 does

The GitHub Advisory Database classifies CVE-2026-89094 as a critical remote-code-execution vulnerability in Forgejo versions before 16.0.4. It assigns a CVSS 3.1 score of 9.9, with a network attack vector, low attack complexity, low privileges required, no user interaction, changed scope, and high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact. “Low privileges required” does not mean unauthenticated: the advisory does not establish that an attacker needs no account. The vulnerable workflow involved a template repository. Forgejo cloned it, removed its .git directory, expanded variables in files listed by .forgejo/template, and then initialized a new Git repository. Expansion could create another .git directory. Git initialization could then adopt the directory and act on attacker-controlled repository metadata. The Forgejo release explanation, reproduced in LWN’s September 10, 2026 report, says a malicious template could be used to read arbitrary data from the host and execute arbitrary processes there. Why the operation order mattered

Deleting a directory before an operation that can recreate it does not ensure that the directory is absent when a later tool uses it. Here, the security boundary was crossed because template expansion wrote to a path that Git subsequently interpreted as control metadata. A .git directory is not merely generated file content when Git is about to initialize or operate in that location.

The release explanation quoted by LWN describes the correction: after variable expansion, Forgejo removes any existing .git directory before initializing the repository. This addresses the specific ordering failure; it does not make template content generally trustworthy.

Which Forgejo versions need attention?

The advisory’s affected boundary is versions before 16.0.4. LWN’s September 10, 2026 reporting on Forgejo release information identifies 16.0.4 and 15.0.8 as releases addressing the flaw. Treat those as reported minimum fix versions for their respective release lines—not as a statement that either is the newest currently supported release. Identify your branch and upgrade to a current supported patched release for it. GitHub Advisory Database; LWN.net report.

How to check and patch your instance

  1. Find the running version and branch. Check the version shown in the Forgejo admin panel or page footer, or query your instance’s /api/v1/version endpoint. The endpoint and these checking suggestions are reported by a secondary article; confirm them against current Forgejo documentation for your deployment. DEV article.
  2. Compare it with current release information. Versions below 16.0.4 need upgrading; for a 15.x instance, the reported fix is 15.0.8. Check the current official release information for your branch rather than treating these September 2026 fix floors as the latest available versions.
  3. Upgrade using your deployment’s supported path. The correct procedure depends on whether you use a package, container, or another deployment method, as well as the release branch. Do not assume one command applies to every installation.
  4. Verify the running instance after the upgrade. Recheck the admin panel, footer, or version endpoint and confirm that the active service—not only the downloaded package or image—reports the intended patched version.

If an immediate upgrade is not possible

A secondary article suggests disabling repository generation from templates as a temporary mitigation. This reduces functionality and should be used only after confirming the setting and procedure against current Forgejo documentation. It is not a substitute for upgrading. Disabling account registration, limiting repository creation, or isolating Actions runners may reduce other risks, but none is established as a fix for this template-generation vulnerability. Audit exposure and investigate cautiously

Determine who could use template generation

Assess whether the affected instance was reachable by untrusted or lower-trust users and whether those users could generate repositories from templates. The advisory describes a network attack requiring low privileges; it does not establish that all deployments had the same exposure. Forgejo’s general security guidance discusses account-registration and repository-creation controls, but those controls should be treated as exposure reduction rather than remediation for CVE-2026-89094. Preserve evidence before cleanup

If an affected instance was exposed during the vulnerable period and may have been targeted, preserve application, reverse-proxy, container, and host logs before removing files or rebuilding systems. Review repository-generation activity, unexpected host-side processes, and unusual file changes around relevant events. The sources available do not establish a CVE-specific log signature or validated detection rule, so absence of an obvious match is not proof that the instance was untouched.

Scope the Forgejo runtime’s reach

Because the reported impact includes arbitrary host data reads and process execution, investigate what files, credentials, processes, and services were accessible to the Forgejo runtime identity. This is an impact-based incident-response step; it is not evidence that any particular credential was stolen or that a specific deployment was compromised.

Keep related Forgejo controls in context

Historical template symlink issue

Forgejo had a separate earlier template-repository symlink vulnerability involving destinations outside the repository. The cited reporting says it was fixed before 13.0.2 and in the 11 LTS line at 11.0.7 and later. That is a distinct historical issue, not CVE-2026-89094 or its fix version. Actions runner security

Forgejo’s Actions guidance covers measures such as limiting unexpected registration or repository creation and narrowing runner registration scope. Those controls address broader risks from untrusted code running in Actions; they do not repair the template workflow that caused this CVE. Apply them as a separate layer of deployment security.
