A database optimization can make an app faster while quietly making its answer wrong. In a case described by WhyRep author Arqam Waheed, limiting how many training-log rows the app read caused it to miss a plateau—the very kind of insight the app exists to provide. The screen still loaded, and no error appeared.
Why a faster history read changed the result
WhyRep analyzes strength-training logs to detect stalls and suggest changes, rather than only storing workouts. Its analysis derives verdicts from raw set logs when a result is requested, so each read traverses exercise history. Waheed wanted to avoid repeatedly loading all of that history.

The first optimization limited the read to the previous two weeks. That sounded like a practical way to bound work, but the plateau rules are based on consecutive missed sessions, not elapsed calendar days. The threshold also varies by lifter tier and movement type. Waheed says the widest rule in the signed methodology was 14 consecutive misses for an elite lifter on a small-joint movement. At one session a week, those misses can cover more than three months.

Why a row cap still missed a plateau
Waheed next derived a maximum row count from the widest miss window, allowing for a baseline and one spare row. That calculation assumed that only one row could be present without counting as a miss. But the progression logic skipped no-verdict sessions when counting misses without resetting the streak. Those sessions still took up space in the limited query result.
Examples of ordinary no-verdict paths included flagged deloads, weight changes without earned overload, rep-range changes, and variant changes. A sequence of such records could push older, relevant misses out of the result even though those records did not count toward the plateau threshold.
Waheed described a scenario involving an elite-tier lifter doing barbell curls: 40 weekly sessions stalled at 30 kg for 8 reps. In the control case, the plateau verdict appeared at session 15. With a deload at session 34, it did not appear at session 13. These are outcomes from the author’s described scenario, not population-level results. The screen rendered normally; the major severity indication and the documented rep-range fix were missing, with no crash, error, or log line.

Fixed row cap versus expanding read
| Approach | How it bounds the read | Correctness concern | Read-work trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed row cap | Always returns a preset number of recent rows. | No fixed relationship existed between rows consumed and misses counted. Neutral records could occupy the result and exclude history that still mattered. | Bounds the number of rows, but the case report gives no measured latency, memory, or database-cost comparison. |
| Expanding read | Starts with the nominal window and widens until a stopping condition establishes that older rows cannot change the result. | Uses the progression logic to determine when the available history is sufficient. | Ordinary progressing cases reportedly settle on the first query; a long uninterrupted stall may require a wider read. No quantitative cost comparison is reported. |
How the expanding read decides when to stop
The fix replaces the fixed budget with a read that grows until one of three conditions is met:
- The read reaches the beginning of the exercise history.
- It finds a PROGRESS verdict, which resets the miss streak.
- The consecutive-miss count reaches the widest plateau window.
Each condition supplies a reason older rows cannot change the current verdict: there is no older history, a progress result has broken the relevant streak, or the decision threshold has already been met. As Waheed puts it, “The loop is not a retry, it is a search for sufficiency.”
What the incident says about performance work
Review input bounds as behavior changes
Reducing the amount or changing the shape of data an algorithm sees can change its output, even when the interface still renders and execution succeeds. Treat a query-window change as a behavior change as well as a performance change. Waheed summarized the issue this way: “A performance change that preserves most behaviour is not a performance change.”

Distinguish counted events from consumed rows
The decision counted misses, while the query limit counted all returned rows. Whenever some records consume input without contributing to a decision—or can be skipped without resetting state—a bound based on the decision count alone may be unsafe. Enumerate the record types that can occupy the window before deriving a cap.

Waheed added a scenario-specific test named AnalysisWindowTest > a deload inside a long stall must not hide the plateau and says it failed against the old constant. Five earlier tests had passed, but they were built on the same incomplete reasoning. The additional test made the hidden assumption visible: a deload can consume a row without counting as a miss.
Useful tests should represent meaningful domain histories, especially records that occupy the algorithm’s input but do not count toward its decision. Naming a test for the failure scenario also keeps its purpose legible to later maintainers.

Do not rely on crash monitoring for wrong answers
Waheed says the app’s existing Sentry instrumentation would not have detected the missing verdict. Crash and latency telemetry can show that a request failed or slowed down; they do not necessarily show that a successful response omitted a correct result. Domain-level correctness checks and review of assumptions are needed alongside operational monitoring.

The account is Waheed’s description of a WhyRep implementation and test scenario, published on DEV Community on Aug 23; the page material does not show a year. It supplies no independently measured latency, memory use, or database-cost comparison between the two approaches, and it does not quantify how common silent correctness regressions are.
Waheed also says he had not built a general property-based testing approach for realistic generated training histories, noting that plausible histories require a domain model. That is an unresolved challenge in this case, not evidence that property-based testing cannot help. The central lesson is narrower: when an optimization bounds input, the bound must preserve the conditions that determine the result.
