No: “Plus 5.6” is not established as an official ChatGPT product. In a campaign reported by TechRadar Pro on September 30, 2026, a custom GPT on the genuine ChatGPT domain claimed the service was unavailable, sent visitors to a Google Sites page, then used a fake Cloudflare CAPTCHA to tell them to paste code into Windows Run. That last step can install malware. Don’t run it: close the page and verify any ChatGPT issue through the official app or website.
How the “Plus 5.6” scam works
The trap begins on a real domain, which can make it look more credible. Attackers configured a custom GPT named “Plus 5.6” to display a single message saying the main service had limited availability and directing visitors to a supposed backup. That backup was on Google Sites, not an OpenAI domain.

The backup page displayed a fake Cloudflare CAPTCHA. Instead of simply asking the visitor to complete a normal verification, it instructed them to copy and paste code into Windows Run. This is a form of ClickFix: the victim is persuaded to execute the attacker’s command themselves, which can install malware.

In this case, the claimed outage and the redirect to an unrelated host were warning signs, not a legitimate workaround.

How to recognize the trap
- A ChatGPT link claims the main service is unavailable and sends you to another site for access or a fix.
- The supposed backup is on an unrelated domain. Google Sites, or another familiar hosting service, is not an official OpenAI address just because it hosts a page about ChatGPT.
- A CAPTCHA asks you to run code. Treat any “verify you are human” instruction to copy text into Windows Run, PowerShell, or Terminal as dangerous. Don’t execute it.
- A page offers an installer, browser extension, or update outside the official OpenAI app or website. Don’t download or install it from a link in a suspicious GPT, message, or page.
- A message applies pressure or asks for payment or credentials. Urgency, unexpected billing demands, and lookalike sign-in pages are common ways to push people into acting before checking.
A separate fake billing campaign reported by ITPro in September 2026 demanded $23.80 within 48 hours. It used a sender domain that was not OpenAI’s and a lookalike sign-in page. The amount and deadline are details of that reported email, not proof that a message is genuine or a standard ChatGPT charge.
What to do if you see the page
- Stop interacting with it. Don’t paste or run the command, download anything, enter account details, or pay a demand.
- Close the tab. Don’t use the page’s “backup” or contact details to investigate the claim.
- Check independently. Open the official OpenAI app or type the official website address yourself, rather than following the suspicious link. OpenAI Academy advises: “Never click a suspicious link or call a number included in the message. Verify the claim independently through an official app, website, phone number, or someone you trust.”
ChatGPT can help identify possible warning signs, but it cannot certify a message as safe. OpenAI Academy puts it plainly: “ChatGPT can help you notice warning signs, but it cannot guarantee that a message is safe.”

If you already pasted or ran the command
Act promptly, especially if you also entered a password or payment information. A pasted command is not proof that malware installed, but it is a reason to treat the device as potentially compromised until checked.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Limit exposure. Where practical, disconnect the affected device from sensitive accounts and avoid using it to sign in to banking, email, or other important services.
- Run a reputable malware scan and follow the scanner’s instructions for anything it finds.
- Update Windows and your browser so they have current security fixes.
- If you entered credentials, change those passwords from a clean device. Enable multifactor authentication on the affected accounts.
- Watch for signs of continued activity: unfamiliar browser extensions, unexpected processes, camera or microphone activity, and unusual account alerts.
- Get professional incident-response help if the device remains suspicious or you cannot remove the threat confidently.
Which protections help—and what each one can do
No single protection replaces checking where a link leads or refusing to run a command supplied by a webpage. Think in layers: stop dangerous content before execution where possible, scan after a mistake, verify claims independently, and protect accounts in case credentials were exposed.

| Protection layer | What it helps with | Limit to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Browser protection before execution | Browsers that support Microsoft Defender SmartScreen can identify and block malicious, phishing, and scam sites, as well as sites hosting malware. | A warning or block is not guaranteed for every new or changing scam. Don’t override a warning to follow a suspicious page’s instructions. |
| Malware scanning after a download or command | A reputable scanner can check for and help remove malicious software that may have been installed. | Scanning is a response measure, not a reason to run an unknown command or install an unofficial update. |
| Independent verification and reporting | Checking a claim through an official app or website helps avoid relying on a link or phone number supplied by a suspicious message. Malwarebytes documents Scam Guard in ChatGPT as a tool to assess risk, spot scams faster, and report suspicious content. | Risk-assessment tools can assist, but they cannot guarantee that a message or link is safe. |
| Account protection | Changing exposed passwords from a clean device and enabling multifactor authentication can help protect accounts if credentials were captured. | Account safeguards do not clean an infected computer; handle device security separately. |
Why familiar AI brands keep appearing in scams
The fake custom GPT fits a wider pattern of using trusted AI names as bait. Microsoft’s June 2026 research describes attackers rotating popular AI brands into phishing pages and malware-download experiences, and recommends browsers that support Defender SmartScreen.
OpenAI’s October 1, 2025 report says it disrupted scam networks that used ChatGPT to create scripts, impersonate others, and engage victims. An OpenAI case study published July 31, 2026 describes a Cambodia-based operation using ChatGPT in investment, romance, gambling, and impersonation scams, including urgent requests and promises of guaranteed or risk-free returns. Those reports provide broader context; they do not establish the scale or number of victims in the specific “Plus 5.6” incident.
