A routing rule that only checks current conditions will keep sending work down a path that just failed, as long as the conditions still look the same. The fix described by Ilya Mozerov in a September 9, 2026 DEV Community post is small: record a real local text-to-speech (TTS) failure, and let that record change how the next qualifying delivery is routed for a short, fixed window. The “next call” in the title is not a telephone call. It is the next event that matches the same delivery predicates for the --deliver path.
What the old rule got wrong
The previous rule handled one case: a proven event arrived while the workstation was occupied, so it was spoken locally. When local TTS failed, the failure was logged for that attempt and then forgotten. The next event with the same predicates, OCCUPIED + PROVEN, followed the same rule and tried the same failed local path again.

Nothing in that design was wrong on its own terms. The rule was correct for the state it could see. The problem was that the state it evaluated did not include the most recent evidence that the local path was not working. The author’s summary of the problem is the line worth keeping: “Otherwise the system is not adapting; it is merely repeating a correct rule against a changed world.”

The change adds a memory of one kind of failure: a local TTS failure that actually happened. The memory is a small state file. By default it lives at $HOME/.mesh/mesh-say-coupling. If the MESH_SAY_COUPLING_FILE environment variable is set, the file is read from that path instead.

Step 1: a real local TTS failure is recorded
When local speech fails during a delivery attempt, the failure is written to the coupling file. Only a real failure creates the marker. A successful attempt does not.
Step 2: the next qualifying event is diverted
For the next 300 seconds, a later OCCUPIED + PROVEN event is sent through mesh-voice-tx instead of the local path. The decision line includes coupling=quarantined, so the diversion is visible in output rather than inferred from behavior. The 300-second figure is the configured window in the author’s implementation. It was chosen as a working value, not derived from measurements of how long local TTS failures last.

- How it Fits: On-ear compact design may feel snug initially—adjust properly and wear 30-60 minutes daily for the first week. Optimal comfort achieved after 1-2 weeks as ear cups conform to your ears. Take 10-minute breaks during extended use.
- Wired computer headset with foldable design; ideal for calls, meetings, online learning, and more. Compact headset measures 6.1" W x 7.2" H with 2.8" ear cups and 4.4" boom mic. Ideal fit for small to medium head sizes
- Flexible, adjustable boom mic can be positioned at any angle; unidirectional mic reduces the background noise to ensure crisp, bright conversations (Provided that your conversation is under the correct direction of the microphone)
- 32mm speaker drivers offer an immersive listening experience with clear sound quality
- One-touch mute/unmute with intuitive in-line control box; Using microphone, slide the button upward to unmute and enabled audio settings in your device. For USB connection, ensure the 3.5mm jack (4-pin) is fully inserted into the USB adapter. For direct 3.5mm connection, first remove the USB adapter from your device
Step 3: the marker is released by proof, not by time alone
The marker is cleared only after a later local delivery is proven. A window that expires without a proven local success is treated as stale, and routing returns to the normal rule. Expired or unreadable state is handled as no memory at all, so a corrupt coupling file does not block delivery; it simply means the system falls back to the current-state rule.
What stays the same
The change is scoped to the --deliver path. Ambient speech that does not use --deliver is unchanged, and the quarantine does not alter how local delivery is decided when no marker is active.

Current-state routing versus history-aware routing
The table below compares the two behaviors on the axes the author’s description makes explicit. It describes how the rules behave; it does not report any benchmark comparing them.
| Behavior axis | Previous rule (current state only) | Quarantine change (history-aware) |
|---|---|---|
| Memory of a local TTS failure | None; the failure does not affect later decisions | Recorded in the coupling file ($HOME/.mesh/mesh-say-coupling or MESH_SAY_COUPLING_FILE) |
| Route for a later OCCUPIED + PROVEN event | Local TTS again | mesh-voice-tx for 300 seconds |
| Duration of the diversion | Not applicable; no diversion exists | Fixed 300-second window as configured by the author |
| Visibility of the decision | Route shown without history context | Output includes coupling=quarantined |
| Release | Not applicable | Cleared after a later local delivery is proven; expired or unreadable state is ignored |
Effect on non---deliver speech |
Unchanged | Unchanged |
The trade-off is straightforward. A bounded window limits how long a transient fault can divert work, but it also means a persistent local fault will be retried once the window closes. A persistent quarantine would avoid that retry, but it would need its own recovery rule, which the described change does not provide. Making decisions visible in output lets an operator see when the diversion is active; it does not by itself tell them why the local path failed.

The author reports reviewing and testing the change on September 9, 2026. The checks described are a shell syntax check, a self-test, and a smoke test that exercises the history-dependent behavior: quarantine when a failure is recorded, and release after a proven local delivery.

Applying the pattern elsewhere
The underlying idea does not depend on speech output. Any router that retries a failing route on identical predicates can use the same shape. If you adapt it, these points from the described implementation matter most:
- Record only observed failures, not guesses about failures.
- Keep the memory scoped to the path that failed and the class of events it affects.
- Use a bounded window, and choose its length from your own failure data rather than copying 300 seconds.
- Release the memory on proof of recovery, and treat stale or unreadable state as absent.
- Expose the diversion in the decision output so it can be seen and audited.
The pattern is a software routing and state-handling choice. It does not require any particular hardware, and the source does not establish how it performs under load, across multiple machines, or with concurrent writers to the coupling file.
Bottom line
A failed route should leave a record that the next decision can read. Ilya Mozerov’s change does that in the narrowest useful way: one recorded local TTS failure, a 300-second diversion to mesh-voice-tx for matching --deliver events, release on a later proven local delivery, and a visible coupling=quarantined marker in the output. Its value is the pattern, not the specific numbers, and the numbers should be checked against your own failure history before you rely on them.

The author’s write-up also frames the behavior with reference to learning and resilience literature, including Wong et al., “A Biological Learning Theory,” and Heylighen and Busseniers, “Modeling autopoiesis and cognition with reaction networks.” Those theoretical references are the author’s framing; this article does not rely on them for any claim about the routing behavior.
