ADJ is unusually large: its project description lists more than 500 mods, five chapters, six dimensions including the Overworld, and a progression campaign centered on restoring the Architect’s Prism. That scale explains the long first startup and makes version pinning, backups, and careful troubleshooting more important than they are for a small mod list.

What you are setting up
A Distant Journey is an adventure and RPG-oriented modpack that also combines building, magic, technology, farming, combat, and roleplay. The project aims to make Minecraft feel substantially different while retaining the familiar modded-Minecraft style. Its campaign is divided into five chapters and spans six dimensions, with progression leading toward restoration of the Architect’s Prism.
The current official target in the project information supplied for this guide is Minecraft 1.20.1 using Forge. CurseForge lists ADJ release 1.4.3, dated July 10, 2026, and a distinct server download named “1.4.3 – Server Pack.” A client export is not automatically a runnable dedicated server, so download the server pack specifically.

The project page showed 124,044 downloads on October 15, 2026. That indicates substantial use, but it is not a promise of a particular player count or tick rate. No independent benchmark establishes guaranteed players, CPU requirements, storage performance, or public-server capacity; those depend on the world, view distance, exploration, and hardware.

Reserve the stated memory while leaving enough RAM for the operating system and other services. Giving the Java process every gigabyte can make the machine less stable, especially when a host is also running a desktop, backup job, or monitoring tools.
Choose a connection method first
E4MC for a temporary cooperative world
The pack author describes E4MC as a way to open a world to remote friends in two clicks. This is convenient for a short session when one person is already playing locally and nobody needs a continuously available world. The host’s computer must remain running, and the group still needs matching client versions.
E4MC is not a replacement for the dedicated server pack when you want scheduled restarts, independent backups, a world that stays online while the owner is away, or fine control over server files. Treat it as the low-administration option for a small, temporary group.
Dedicated server for a persistent world
A dedicated server runs separately from a player’s single-player session. It is the better fit when friends should be able to return without the owner opening a world, when you need repeatable backups, or when you want to control configuration and update timing. You can run it on your own computer or place it with a managed host.

Dedicated-server setup: step by step
1. Pin the release before downloading anything
- Open the official A Distant Journey project page on CurseForge.
- Select the Minecraft 1.20 server-pack area and choose 1.4.3 – Server Pack.
- Record the release number in a small text file or your server notes. Give the same number to every player.
- Do not mix files from another ADJ release, a different Minecraft version, or an unrelated Forge profile.
If the project page has published a newer release by the time you deploy, verify that a matching server pack exists and that the pack documentation identifies it as compatible with Minecraft 1.20.1. A newer client download without a corresponding server pack is not a reason to update a live world.

Use a new folder dedicated to this server rather than unpacking over another modpack. A clear directory makes backups and rollback possible. Keep the downloaded archive, the extracted server files, world folders, configuration files, logs, and start script together unless the pack documentation says otherwise.
Do not copy a random collection of mods into the folder to “complete” the pack. The server pack should supply the intended mod set, configurations, and datapacks. Adding or removing one mod can change registry data and prevent existing clients from joining.
3. Prepare Java and Forge
The server pack’s included files or documentation should identify the Java runtime expected by its Forge/Minecraft 1.20.1 installation. Install that runtime before launching. If the archive includes a Forge installer or a prepared launch script, use the supplied files rather than constructing a different command from memory.
The available project information does not publish a single authoritative command line that applies to every operating system. Consequently, the exact command must be taken from the included start script and the Forge installer documentation for that pack. On Windows this is commonly a supplied batch script; on Linux or another Unix-like system it may be a shell script. The important checks are that the script points to the intended Java executable, uses the server’s Forge files, and starts in the server directory.

4. Launch once and accept the EULA
- Run the included start script from the server directory.
- Allow the first launch to create its files. A large pack can take noticeably longer than a vanilla server because Forge must load hundreds of mods and the world may begin generating many data structures.
- If the process stops and creates an EULA file, open that file, read the Minecraft terms, and change the acceptance entry only if you agree to them.
- Start the script again and wait for the console to report that the server has finished loading. Do not connect while Forge is still registering mods or generating the spawn area.
- Stop the server cleanly from its console before editing configuration. Closing the window or killing Java can leave region and player data in an inconsistent state.
Keep the first-run log. It provides the baseline if a later update introduces a missing dependency, a Java error, or a memory failure.
5. Set memory deliberately
The author states that 8 GB is the minimum and 10–12 GB is recommended. Set the Java heap in the supplied start script or launcher configuration, using the script’s existing options rather than deleting other Forge arguments. Allocate enough physical RAM for the heap plus the operating system and any other applications.
Start with the recommended range for a normal group, then watch the first world-generation boot. A server that repeatedly reaches its heap limit, pauses for long garbage-collection cycles, or exits with an out-of-memory message needs more available memory or a smaller workload. Increasing the heap cannot fix a wrong Java version, a corrupt download, or a mod conflict.
6. Check the console and logs before inviting anyone
Let the server reach its ready state without errors. Review the latest log for:
- Java or Forge version errors;
- missing mod, dependency, or library messages;
- file-permission failures when creating the world;
- repeated out-of-memory or watchdog messages; and
- a clean server-ready message after the final loading stage.
Do not “solve” a startup stop by deleting random mods. First compare the folder with the untouched server-pack archive, confirm the Java runtime, and verify that the script is being run from the correct directory.

7. Configure the server only while it is stopped
After the first successful boot, stop the process cleanly. This is the safe point to adjust the ordinary server settings supplied by the pack, such as the server name, difficulty, player list, or network port. Change one setting at a time and retain a copy of the original file so you can identify which edit caused a problem.
Because ADJ contains more than 500 mods, its important gameplay settings may live in mod-specific configuration files as well as the standard server properties. Avoid changing progression, world-generation, or dimension settings on an established world unless the relevant mod documentation says the change is safe. Such edits can create missing blocks, broken quests, or irreversible world differences.
8. Make the server reachable
For players outside your home network, a self-hosted dedicated server normally requires the server port to be allowed through the host computer’s firewall and, when the server is behind a router, forwarded to the host machine. The exact menu names differ by router and operating system. Give the host computer a stable local address so a forwarding rule does not point to a different device after a reboot.
Only expose the port you actually use, keep the operating system and Java runtime updated, and use an allowlist if the server will be reachable from the public internet. Do not publish the machine’s administrative credentials or share files containing them.
9. Install the matching client on every player’s computer
- Have each player install ADJ release 1.4.3 through the same launcher or project distribution used to select the server release.
- Confirm that the client is configured for Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge, not vanilla Minecraft or another loader.
- Do not let a launcher update one player to a different ADJ release while the server remains on 1.4.3.
- Send the server address and port only after the server has completed loading.
FadeHost’s published guidance for this pack also stresses that joining players need the matching client pack. Server-side installation does not automatically install client mods. If one player receives a mod-list mismatch, compare the release number, Minecraft version, Forge profile, and configuration files before changing the server.

FadeHost states that it can install the full Forge pack, including mods, configurations, and datapacks, and advertises a 4 GB trial. That trial is below ADJ’s stated 8 GB minimum, so it should not be treated as evidence that the complete pack will run reliably at that allocation. The provider also states that its service is independent of the ADJ authors. Confirm the current memory allocation, backup retention, update behavior, and restore process directly before migrating a valuable world.
When the server fails to start

Backups and updates
ADJ is still actively developed, and the pack information warns that stability or performance issues may occur. Treat every pack update as a change to the game and potentially to the world format.
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the complete world directory, server configuration, mod configuration, datapacks, and the current start-script settings to storage separate from the live folder.
- Record the old ADJ release, Minecraft version, Forge version, Java version, and date.
- Install the new server pack in a separate test directory instead of overwriting the live server.
- Test a copy of the world and have at least one client install the matching new pack.
- Only switch the live server after the test starts cleanly and the group accepts the changes.
- Keep the old backup until the new version has survived normal play and a restore test.
A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption. Periodically copy a backup to another disk or machine and verify that the archive opens and contains the expected region and player files.
Capacity and performance expectations
The author’s 8 GB minimum and 10–12 GB recommendation are the only published memory guidance supplied for this pack. There is no established guarantee for player count, CPU model, storage type, or tick-rate performance. A lightly explored world with a few players can behave very differently from a group generating several dimensions, loading automation, and exploring in different directions.
For a private group, begin with the recommended memory range, keep the server process and operating system on fast, reliable storage, and observe the console during exploration. If performance degrades, note what the players were doing and which dimensions or machines were active before changing settings. That evidence is more useful than blindly increasing RAM.
Practical launch checklist
- Server and clients are pinned to ADJ 1.4.3, Minecraft 1.20.1, and Forge.
- The download is the dedicated “1.4.3 – Server Pack.”
- The Java runtime matches the Forge/Minecraft installation documented with the pack.
- The first boot completed, the EULA was accepted, and the server was stopped cleanly before configuration edits.
- At least 8 GB is reserved for the server process, with 10–12 GB preferred and additional RAM left for the operating system.
- Logs show no unresolved dependency, Java, or memory errors.
- Every player has the identical client pack and Forge profile.
- Firewall and router rules are configured only if remote players need access.
- A clean world and configuration backup exists before the first update or major settings change.
Bottom line
Use the official 1.4.3 server pack for Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge, allocate 8 GB at minimum (10–12 GB recommended), and make client installations identical. E4MC is appropriate for a quick shared session; a dedicated server—self-hosted or managed—is the dependable choice for a persistent ADJ world. Because the pack is large and evolving, clean installs, conservative memory settings, complete backups, and pinned versions will prevent most avoidable failures.
