Make your portfolio link a quick route to proof: identify the kind of developer you are, show a few relevant projects, explain your contribution, and make it easy to inspect the work or contact you. There is no established universal project count. Choose enough examples to demonstrate your strengths without adding weaker or repetitive work.
What should a developer portfolio link show first?
Use the first screen to state your role or focus and the kind of work you do. A short introduction is more useful than a broad claim such as “passionate developer” because it helps a visitor decide whether to explore the projects. Make the next action obvious: readers should be able to find your work, code, and contact details without hunting through the page. CodeBegun’s portfolio guide and Waida Studio’s guide both emphasize a clear introduction and useful navigation.

How many projects should you include?
There is no source-supported number that applies to every developer or role. Recommendations vary: CodeBegun suggests two to four real projects, while Waida Studio suggests three to six. Treat those as different editorial ranges, not a hiring rule. A smaller set is stronger when each project demonstrates relevant ability and the next candidate would add little new evidence.
Choose projects against the opportunity you want the portfolio to support. A useful comparison asks whether each project is relevant, whether you can clearly explain your own contribution, whether a visitor can inspect it, and whether it adds distinct evidence rather than repeating another example. This is a practical selection framework, not a published scoring system.

What to explain for each project
A project card should help someone understand not only what you built, but how you think and what you did. For each featured project, cover:
- The problem: What need or task did the work address?
- Your role: What did you personally own? Be specific about your contribution to team projects.
- Key decisions or challenges: What meaningful choice did you make, and what constraint or technical problem shaped it?
- The result: What did the finished work achieve or demonstrate? Do not imply a measured outcome unless you can support it.
- Evidence: Link to a working demo and repository or code when available.
Connect technologies to that evidence rather than presenting an unexplained list of tools. For example, name a technology where it helps explain a design decision or feature you implemented. The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Career Center’s LinkedIn guidance recommends describing accomplishments, results, and skills in experience entries; the same evidence-led approach makes a portfolio more informative.

Which links belong on the page?
Keep the paths a visitor needs easy to find and relevant to the work:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- A demo link, if the project runs and shows the intended result.
- A repository or code link, if it is available and appropriate to share.
- A direct contact method.
- Relevant GitHub and LinkedIn profiles.
- A resume or CV download when it supports the reader’s next step.
Do not make a link look like evidence if it does not open or no longer represents the project. The readytodev-pro GitHub guide warns against broken demos and recommends checking project links before application waves. CodeBegun also stresses working live demos.

What should you leave out?
Work you cannot explain
Do not feature a project merely because it looks polished if you cannot discuss how it works or what you contributed. Tutorial-based work is not automatically unusable, but it should not be presented as independent evidence if you cannot explain its design and code. The readytodev-pro guide advises choosing projects you can explain.
Broken, empty, or misleading links
Remove a demo link that fails, leads to an empty page, or no longer shows the project as described. If the work remains useful but the demo is unavailable, link to the code instead and label the path accurately.

Padding and unrelated detail
Skip extra projects, personal information, or long skill inventories that do not help someone evaluate your fit. The goal is not to make the page longer; it is to make relevant evidence easier to assess.
Visual choices that get in the way
Do not let animation, unusual navigation, or decorative effects delay access to the work. If you also provide a resume, keep its constraints in mind: UIUC’s resume guidance cautions that unusual layouts and graphics may render poorly, be rejected by applicant tracking systems, or be inaccessible to screen readers. That warning is about resumes and should not be treated as a portfolio-specific technical standard.

Should it be one page or several?
A single page with anchored sections can work well for a small project collection. Waida Studio says this format can serve developers with fewer than four projects. If a project needs more room to explain its problem, your role, decisions, and result, give it a dedicated case-study page. Choose the simplest structure that lets a recruiter scan the work and an engineer inspect it.
Check the link before sharing it
- Open the portfolio on a phone and check that the first screen still identifies your focus and makes the work easy to reach.
- Open every project demo and confirm it shows the intended project.
- Open every repository or code link and confirm it is accessible and relevant.
- Try the contact and professional-profile links so visitors have a working next step.
Mobile review is practical advice, not a formal performance or accessibility threshold established by the sources. The essential check is that the pages and links work as a recipient will encounter them.
What the available guidance does—and does not—establish
Published guides offer differing project-count recommendations, but the available sources do not establish a universal count or quantify how a portfolio affects hiring outcomes. UIUC’s resume guidance includes an estimate for an initial resume review; that is a resume-specific figure, not evidence about how long someone spends on a portfolio. No universal requirement should be inferred from these recommendations.
