Minesweeper is a deduction game: reveal every safe cell without opening a mine. Each revealed number tells you how many mines touch that cell—including diagonally—so the key is to compare the clue with its covered neighbors, not to guess from the digits alone.
What does a number in Minesweeper mean?
A number counts mines in all eight neighboring cells: above, below, left, right, and the four diagonals. A 1 therefore means exactly one of those neighboring cells contains a mine; it does not say which one. A blank cell has no neighboring mines. Many versions automatically reveal safe cells around a blank, causing a larger area to open.

How to solve a board step by step
- Choose an active clue. Look for a revealed number next to covered cells, often along the boundary between revealed and unrevealed parts of the board.
- Count every covered neighbor. Include diagonals, and count only cells that are still covered.
- Subtract established mines. If confirmed mines already account for part of the clue, subtract them from its number. The result is the number of mines still among its covered neighbors.
- Apply the two direct deductions. If the remainder is zero, all its other covered neighbors are safe. If the remainder equals the number of covered neighbors left, every one of those cells is a mine.
- Compare clues that share covered cells. Two clues may constrain the same group without revealing which individual cell in that group is mined. Compare what each clue requires, then look for any extra neighbors one clue has.
- Update and repeat. After a deduction, reconsider all nearby clues. Keep a cell marked as uncertain until the clues actually establish it.
For example, if a 2 touches three covered cells and one neighboring mine is already confirmed, the two remaining covered cells must contain one more mine between them. Neither cell is individually identified yet. If a nearby clue later shows that one of those two is safe, the other must be the mine.

How do basic Minesweeper patterns work?
Patterns are shortcuts for comparing overlapping groups of neighbors; they are not rules that apply just because certain digits appear next to each other. Check which covered cells touch each clue before drawing a conclusion. Minesweeper.org’s strategy guide covers common pattern reasoning.
Comparing two neighboring 1 clues
Suppose one 1 touches two covered cells, and a second 1 touches those same two cells plus one extra covered cell. The shared pair must contain exactly one mine, satisfying both 1s. The extra cell is safe. This deduction depends on the second clue having no other covered neighbors that could change the comparison.

Comparing a 1 and a 2
If a 1 and a 2 touch the same two covered cells, and the 2 also touches exactly one extra covered cell, that extra cell must be a mine. The shared pair already contains the one mine required by the 1; the 2 needs one additional mine. Additional neighbors around either clue can invalidate this simple conclusion.
Reading 1-2-1 and 1-2-2-1 shapes
These familiar edge sequences are extensions of overlapping-constraint reasoning. The digits alone do not prove which cells are mined. Verify the edge layout, identify every covered neighbor of each clue, and check whether the clues share the groups the pattern assumes. A different board shape or an extra covered neighbor can change the result.

How do flags and chording work?
A flag is a marker you place on a cell you believe contains a mine. It helps you track deductions, but it is not proof: the game does not necessarily verify that a flagged cell is mined. A clue is often called satisfied when the number of adjacent flags matches its value. If those flags are correct, its other covered neighbors are safe.
Chording is a shortcut: when the number of flags around a revealed clue matches that clue’s number, a chord action opens the remaining unflagged neighbors. Controls vary across games and devices. Commonly, players reveal with a click or tap, flag with a right-click or long-press, and chord by clicking or tapping a satisfied clue. Check the controls for the specific version you are playing.

Chording is only as safe as the flags it relies on. If a flag is misplaced, the action can open a mine. Make deductions before using it. Some versions award a win when every safe cell is open, making flags unnecessary to the win condition; check the particular game’s rules.
Does every Minesweeper board start the same way?
No. First-click protection and board settings depend on the game. Minesweeper.org says its first click is safe. MinesweeperHQ says its version places mines after the first click and protects both the clicked cell and its immediate neighbors. Those are different protections, so do not assume one version’s opening behavior applies to another.
Board dimensions and mine counts also vary. Minesweeper.org lists a Beginner board of 9×9 cells with 10 mines—a common configuration, not a universal standard. When choosing a game or practice mode, check its first-click protection, board dimensions, mine density, controls, and whether its board generator permits guesses or seeks a logical solution.
What should you do when logic runs out?
Some ordinary random boards reach a genuine ambiguity. If a 1 touches two covered cells and no other clue or remaining-mine constraint distinguishes them, either cell could be the mine. Recheck the rest of the board and the total mines remaining; if neither resolves the choice, the available information does not determine a safe move.
No-guess modes aim to generate boards with a deduction-only path, but the exact rules and guarantee depend on the implementation. Minesweeper Coop reports measurements for its own no-guess generator on 20×16 boards: it says 17% of candidate boards were solvable at 18.8% mine density, 7% at 20.6%, 3% at 22%, and 0.3% at 24%. These are that service’s reported generator results, not general Minesweeper probabilities. Its page also reports that, at 300 generation attempts, 20.6% density did not fall through to an unchecked board across 200 games on each board size, while 22% did. A practical checklist for each move
- Count diagonals as well as side-adjacent cells.
- Separate confirmed mines from assumptions or unverified flags.
- Compare the number of mines a clue still needs with the number of covered neighbors remaining.
- Use shared-neighbor patterns only after checking every covered neighbor of each clue.
- Before chording, confirm that the adjacent flags are correct.
- If no clue or board-wide constraint distinguishes the remaining possibilities, recognize that the position may require a guess.
