To set up a Samsung Galaxy Tab, charge it with the correct charger and cable, connect it to Wi-Fi, choose whether to transfer data, sign in to your Google account, and set a screen lock. Then configure typing and DeX only if your exact model supports them, and confirm cellular service with your carrier before relying on it while traveling.
Before you turn on the tablet
- Charge the tablet using the charger and cable intended for that model. There is no single wattage or accessory specification established for every Galaxy Tab.
- If yours is a cellular model, have the carrier’s SIM or eSIM instructions handy. A physical SIM may need to be inserted; eSIM setup may be offered during setup or completed later, depending on the device and carrier.
- Insert a microSD card now only if your exact tablet model has a slot and you plan to use one.
- Keep your old phone or tablet charged and available if you intend to copy data.
Samsung notes that setup screens and steps can differ between Wi-Fi-only and LTE/5G models. Samsung’s Galaxy tablet setup guide covers the general flow.

Complete first-time setup
- Power on the tablet and choose your language.
- Review the terms and privacy or diagnostic choices presented on screen.
- Connect to Wi-Fi. Google recommends Wi-Fi for Android data copy or restore. If cellular setup appears, follow the carrier’s instructions for SIM or eSIM activation rather than assuming every model or carrier supports the same options.
- When asked about copying apps and data, choose whether to transfer from an old device or set up the tablet as new. See the next section before deciding.
- Sign in to or create a Google account. It provides access to the Play Store and Google features.
- Create a screen lock. Samsung says biometric unlocking also requires a standard lock method.
- Complete the remaining prompts, then choose a light or dark appearance and review the home screen.
A Samsung account is an additional sign-in, not the same as a Google account. Samsung describes it as enabling Galaxy services, syncing with other Galaxy devices, and device-location features; the documented setup flow treats it as optional.

If you want to bring information from another Galaxy or Android device, or from an iPhone or iPad, use the Smart Switch option offered during setup. Samsung lists contacts, messages, photos, videos, documents, settings, and applications among supported transfer categories. Available routes include wireless transfer, cable, iCloud, or external storage, depending on the source device and the options shown.

- Use a cable or wireless transfer when the devices and prompts support that route. Keep both devices nearby and powered while the copy runs.
- Use iCloud if you are moving from an Apple device and that option is offered.
- Use external storage only if you have a compatible drive or card and the relevant transfer option is available.
Smart Switch does not move every item. Google also cautions that Android transfer may not copy some app data or accounts and calendars synced through non-Google services. Before relying on the tablet for work or school, check important apps individually and confirm their files, logins, and cloud sync are working. Data already synced through Google, Microsoft Office, or another service generally becomes available after you add the relevant account.
Finish configuring accounts, apps, and updates
Install the apps you need from the Play Store and add any work, school, or other service accounts those apps use. Check that important files and calendars appear rather than assuming they were included in device transfer.

Review the available Settings and Play Store update options for system software and apps. Menu names and update availability can vary by model and software, so follow the labels on your tablet rather than relying on a single path or a promised update schedule.

Set up typing and handwriting for work or school
Choose an input method
Samsung Keyboard settings can include keyboard mode, size, layout, voice input, handwriting, and S Pen-to-text options. The available controls and their location can vary by software version and wireless provider. If you cannot find them, search Settings for “Samsung Keyboard.”

Add a keyboard only if it fits your tablet
A compatible Samsung Book Cover Keyboard is an option for frequent typing, not a requirement. Confirm the accessory’s compatibility with the exact Galaxy Tab model before buying; keyboard covers are not universal. Samsung describes using a compatible keyboard cover with DeX for a laptop-mode experience.
An S Pen replacement is also model-specific. Check the tablet’s compatibility before choosing a pen rather than assuming one Galaxy Tab pen works with every model.

Check DeX and external-display support on your exact model
Samsung DeX is available on selected tablets, not every Galaxy Tab. Samsung’s live support information lists various Tab S generations and some Tab A models; consult the current Samsung DeX support page for your model and software. On supported tablets, DeX can be started from Quick Settings and used with the tablet screen, S Pen, USB or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, or a compatible keyboard cover.

Compatibility details depend on both model and software version. Samsung’s current US support page says DeX for PC is not supported on models running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later, excludes Tab S9 FE and Tab S10 FE series from Wireless DeX, and describes newer standalone DeX behavior on supported Android 16/One UI 8 tablets. Treat these as specific, changeable compatibility notes—not as features shared by all tablets.

Samsung documents wired HDMI and wireless display options for compatible devices. A USB-C connector alone does not establish video-output support, so check your tablet’s model documentation and the display’s compatibility before buying an adapter or planning a presentation.
Prepare the Galaxy Tab for travel
If you have a Wi-Fi-only model
Plan to use Wi-Fi and make essential files available offline before leaving. Offline availability depends on the apps and services you use; the steps are not the same for every app.
If you have an LTE or 5G model
Before relying on mobile data, confirm with your carrier that the exact tablet model, supported bands, plan, and destination-country service are compatible. Ask the carrier how to activate a physical SIM or eSIM and whether your plan covers the trip. Samsung’s setup guidance does not establish international roaming terms or destination-specific eSIM availability.

Do a practical pre-trip check
- Open essential documents and confirm they are available offline where needed.
- Make sure you can access your Google, Samsung, and work or school accounts, including any recovery method you may need.
- Confirm that a screen lock is enabled.
- Check the exact model’s SIM/eSIM, storage, charging, keyboard, and DeX compatibility if your trip or workflow depends on any of them.
