What a circular seating puzzle is really asking
You are given a group of people, a circular set of seats, and verbal conditions such as who sits opposite whom, who is immediately to someone’s left, or who cannot be adjacent. Your task may be to construct the entire arrangement or answer one question about it, such as who sits opposite a named person.

A circle has rotational symmetry: unless a clue fixes a particular clock position, turning a complete arrangement does not change any relative relationship. That is why you can place one person anywhere as an anchor. The anchor is not a guess about the real answer; it simply gives your drawing a reference point.

Facing direction controls every directional clue. This guide uses the common convention that, for a person facing the center, their left points clockwise around the page and their right points anticlockwise. For a person facing outward, those directions reverse.

Write the convention at the top of your page and draw a clockwise arrow. Then imagine the seated person looking in their stated direction. Do not use the left side of your own page as a substitute for the person’s left.
Some practice material prints the inward-facing rule in the opposite way. The safest response is not to blend the two systems: follow the convention specified by the question or answer key, state it in your working, and apply it consistently. If no convention is supplied, state yours before solving.
| Person faces | Their left moves | Their right moves |
|---|---|---|
| Center | Clockwise | Anticlockwise |
| Outside | Anticlockwise | Clockwise |
In a mixed-facing puzzle, there is no single left/right rule for the whole circle. Apply the rule belonging to the person named in each clue.
Draw the circle and choose an anchor
- Count the seats. Draw that many evenly spaced positions. Number them clockwise if numbering will help.
- Show movement. Add a clockwise arrow and mark the centre of the circle.
- Mark orientation. Put an inward or outward arrow beside every named person as soon as their direction is known.
- Choose an anchor when needed. If no seat is fixed, place one person at the top. Every other placement is measured relative to that person.
For eight seats, the positions can be labelled 0 through 7. Moving one seat clockwise from position 0 reaches position 1; moving anticlockwise reaches position 7. Numbering prevents a common mistake: forgetting to wrap from the last position back to the first.

Translate the vocabulary into seat relationships
Rewrite each verbal clue as a short relation before placing anyone. This separates interpretation from drawing and makes contradictions easier to locate.
| Wording | What it means | Check before using it |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate neighbour | The adjacent seat on either side. | There are two neighbours; the clue must identify the side if only one is intended. |
| Immediate left/right | The next seat in the named person’s left or right direction. | Use that person’s facing direction, not another person’s. |
| One person between | Exactly one occupied seat lies along the stated arc. | Determine which direction the wording specifies; otherwise both arcs may be possible. |
| Second or third to a side | Count seat positions from the named person in that person’s direction. | Confirm whether the question counts the first seat as “first” and wraps around the circle. |
| Opposite | The seat directly across the centre. | It exists only when the number of seats is even. |
| Not adjacent | The two people cannot occupy neighbouring seats. | Eliminate only neighbouring positions; do not treat it as a fixed placement. |
“Second to the left” normally means move two seat positions in the named person’s left direction. If the question’s instructions define a different counting convention, use that definition and record it beside the clue.
A reliable solving order
- List every clue. Mark each as a fixed relationship, a directional relationship, a block, an adjacency condition, or a negative condition.
- Place the strongest facts first. Opposite positions, an explicitly fixed seat, and immediate-left or immediate-right clues usually restrict the diagram more than “not adjacent.”
- Build blocks. If two or three people have fixed consecutive relationships, treat them as one movable unit until another clue fixes the unit’s location.
- Apply orientation locally. For each directional clue, look at the facing arrow of the person named as the reference.
- Preserve branches. If a clue permits two locations, copy the diagram or label two candidates. Do not erase one merely because it looks less convenient.
- Use negative clues to prune. Once positive relationships are placed, remove candidates that violate “not adjacent,” “not opposite,” or exclusion statements.
- Read the original wording again. Test every clue against every surviving candidate, including clues that were not needed to construct the layout.
A candidate is a solution only when all conditions hold simultaneously. A diagram that satisfies the last clue you used is not enough.
Worked example: an eight-seat inward-facing circle
Assume eight people face the centre. Use the convention stated above: left is clockwise and right is anticlockwise. Place A at position 0 as the arbitrary anchor.

- B is immediately left of A.
- C sits opposite A.
- D is immediately right of C.
- E is second to the left of A.
- G sits opposite E.
- F is not adjacent to B.
Place the definite relationships
B goes to position 1 because A’s left is clockwise. C goes to position 4, half the circle away. E goes to position 2. Since C faces inward, its right is anticlockwise, so D goes one step back from C to position 3. E’s opposite seat is position 6, so G goes there.
| Clockwise position | 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Person | A | B | E | D | C | open | G | open |
Apply the negative clue
The seats adjacent to B at position 1 are positions 0 and 2, already occupied by A and E. Therefore F can occupy either open position 5 or open position 7; neither is adjacent to B. H takes the remaining open position. Two layouts survive:
- A, B, E, D, C, F, G, H clockwise.
- A, B, E, D, C, H, G, F clockwise.
Both satisfy the listed clues. If a later question asks who sits at position 5, the information given is insufficient to choose between F and H. Keep both candidates until another condition distinguishes them.

Opposite seats and seat counting
For n seats, an opposite position is n/2 steps away. That requires an even number of seats. In a six-seat circle, position 0 is opposite position 3; in an eight-seat circle, position 0 is opposite position 4. An odd-sized circle has no seat exactly across the centre, so a clue saying that two people are opposite is incompatible with that seat count unless the puzzle uses a nonstandard definition.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Do not confuse “opposite” with “three places away” in every puzzle. The correct distance depends on the total number of seats, and counting must wrap around the circle.
How mixed-facing puzzles change the method
Mixed-facing questions require an orientation mark for each person, not one rule for the entire diagram. Suppose B occupies position 3 and faces outward. B’s left is anticlockwise, so a clue saying “C is immediately left of B” places C at position 2. If B instead faced inward, the same clue would place C at position 4.
When a person’s facing direction is itself unknown, treat each possible orientation as a branch. Write the orientation beside the person and carry it through all of that person’s directional clues. A placement that works under one orientation cannot be reused under the other without recalculating every left/right relationship.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Use the reference person’s orientation, not the destination person’s orientation.
- Keep inward and outward arrows visible after a person has been placed.
- Recheck a person’s left/right clues together; one reversed arrow can invalidate an otherwise plausible layout.
Handling blocks, neighbours and ambiguous wording
Consecutive blocks
If A is immediately left of B and B is immediately left of C, draw the ordered block A–B–C. The block can be rotated around the circle, but its internal order stays fixed. If the circle is small, remember that the block may cross the top-to-bottom drawing boundary; the first and last seats are still adjacent.

“One person between”
There are two arcs between most pairs of people. If a clue does not say “to the left,” “clockwise,” or “to the right,” test both interpretations. A layout that uses the wrong arc can appear to satisfy the sentence while violating its intended direction.
Neighbour versus immediate side
“A is next to B” allows either side unless another clue fixes the side. “A is immediately left of B” allows only one seat, determined from B’s perspective. Preserve that distinction when converting prose into notes.
Negative conditions
“A is not adjacent to B” does not identify A’s seat. It simply removes the two seats next to B. Apply such conditions after placing stronger relationships, when they eliminate fewer possibilities and are less likely to be misused as positive evidence.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Using the reader’s left: Draw a person facing the centre and label their own left and right before placing anyone.
- Reversing clockwise and anticlockwise: Add an arrow and number seats in one direction. Never rely on a mental picture alone.
- Forgetting wraparound: Treat position 0 and the final numbered position as neighbours.
- Assuming a top seat is special: The top is only an anchor unless the clue fixes a clock position.
- Locking in an unproved choice: Maintain separate candidate diagrams whenever two positions remain possible.
- Using a negative clue too early: “Not adjacent” is an elimination rule, not a starting placement.
- Checking only the question asked: A candidate may give the requested name while violating another original clue. Validate the complete set.
- Mixing facing rules: In mixed puzzles, annotate every person and calculate each directional clue independently.
A final verification checklist
Before selecting an answer, run the completed diagram through this list:
- Is the seat count correct?
- Does every person appear exactly once?
- Are inward and outward orientations marked and used consistently?
- Does each immediate-left or immediate-right clue point to the correct adjacent seat?
- Are all opposite pairs exactly halfway around an even-sized circle?
- Does every “one person between” or “second/third to a side” count use the stated arc and wraparound?
- Are all forbidden adjacencies or opposites absent?
- Were alternative candidates retained wherever the clues did not force a choice?
If a contradiction appears, do not move random people. Return to the earliest directional translation, because a reversed left/right interpretation is often the source of the conflict. If the contradiction remains, inspect whether the wording permits two arcs or whether the assumed facing direction was actually unspecified.
Practise without guessing
Improvement comes from translating clues and checking diagrams, not from memorising a single pattern. Choose exercises that include circular seating questions, mixed orientations, opposite-seat relationships, and worked solutions. After solving, compare your written translation of each clue with the explanation, especially where the exercise uses a different left/right convention. Keeping a short error log—such as “forgot wraparound” or “used B’s orientation instead of A’s”—helps prevent the same mistake on the next puzzle.
