If pressing A types S—or pressing S types A—start by checking which keyboard input layout is selected. On Windows, an unexpected layout is a practical first check; if the intended layout is already active, inspect key-remapping software such as PowerToys. The symptom alone does not establish whether the cause is Windows, another utility, or the keyboard itself.
First, identify where the swap happens
Note whether you are using a built-in laptop keyboard or an external one, and whether the problem appears in more than one app. If another keyboard is available, check whether it produces the same result. These observations help distinguish a setting that affects the computer from behavior tied to one keyboard, but they do not by themselves identify the cause.

On Windows, check the selected keyboard layout
Windows can have more than one keyboard or input layout installed. The selected layout determines how key presses are interpreted, so check it before changing other settings.
- Look at the input-language indicator in the Windows taskbar and check which keyboard layout is selected.
- If it is not the layout you intend to use, select the correct one. You can also press Windows key + Space to cycle through installed layouts.
- Test A and S again in a text field.
The keyboard layout is separate from the Windows display language. Microsoft explains that “Changing the keyboard layout only changes the layout and doesn’t change the Windows display language.” See Microsoft’s instructions for managing language and keyboard/input layout settings.

If the layout is right, inspect key-remapping software
A remapping utility can assign a different output to a key. Microsoft’s PowerToys Keyboard Manager supports key-to-key remapping; to swap A and S, the configuration needs both assignments: A to S and S to A.
- Open PowerToys and go to Keyboard Manager.
- Review the key mappings for A and S. Remove or correct any assignments that redirect one key to the other.
- If you want the keys intentionally swapped, configure both reciprocal mappings rather than only one.
PowerToys must be running and Keyboard Manager enabled for its mappings to take effect. To stop its remapping, close PowerToys or disable Keyboard Manager. Microsoft’s PowerToys Keyboard Manager documentation describes the feature and its requirements.

If you use an Apple keyboard in Windows
For an Apple keyboard used in Windows through Boot Camp, Apple’s guidance covers Windows key equivalents and recommends installing the latest Apple software updates for Windows and Windows support software when the keyboard behaves unexpectedly. If A and S are still swapped
Do not assume the keyboard is damaged based on this symptom alone. The Windows layout and PowerToys checks address two documented software causes, but they cannot rule in or rule out other utilities or keyboard-specific configuration. For a more targeted diagnosis, record the operating system, keyboard model, whether it is built-in or external, which apps show the problem, and whether a second keyboard behaves the same. The available guidance does not establish a universal macOS, Linux, or hardware-specific fix for an A/S swap.
