A valid-looking HTTP 402 payment challenge does not guarantee that a payment can be completed. In x402, the client must select an offered payment option it supports, send a matching signed payload, and pass verification and settlement before the protected resource is delivered. To diagnose a failure, first establish that the endpoint uses x402, then inspect the challenge and the results of each payment stage.
What an HTTP 402 does—and does not—tell you
HTTP 402 is not a universally standardized payment format. MDN describes it as a nonstandard status code reserved for future use, with no standard convention for how it should be used; implementations apply it in different contexts. Some payment APIs use it as a catch-all for failed payment requests. A 402 by itself therefore does not prove that the response contains an x402 challenge, that your request was malformed, or even that a payment was attempted. MDN’s 402 reference explains the status’s varied use.

How the x402 payment flow works
For x402 v2 over HTTP, the server returns 402 with a PAYMENT-REQUIRED header containing Base64-encoded JSON payment requirements. The client selects an option it can meet, creates a payment payload for that option’s scheme and network, and retries with a PAYMENT-SIGNATURE header. The server verifies the payment locally or through a facilitator, serves the resource, and settles the payment directly or through a facilitator. The documented successful response is HTTP 200 with a PAYMENT-RESPONSE settlement header. See the x402 HTTP transport specification and the x402 documentation.

Its JSON can parse correctly while offering no option the client can satisfy; the retry can omit or mismatch the required signed payload; or verification or settlement can fail. A well-formed challenge is evidence that requirements were communicated, not proof that payment completed. The exact cause in a particular incident depends on the request, response headers, and verification or settlement result.

Read x402 status codes in context
The x402 HTTP transport maps malformed payment payloads or requirements to 400, verification or settlement failures to 402, server errors during payment processing to 500, and successful delivery to 200. These are x402 transport mappings, not universal rules for every HTTP 402 response. MDN’s description of 402 is a useful reminder to identify the protocol before interpreting the status.
Debug the failure one stage at a time
- Confirm the protocol. Check that the endpoint implements the x402 version and HTTP transport your client expects. If it is another payment API, its 402 may have a different meaning.
- Decode the requirements. Base64-decode
PAYMENT-REQUIREDand inspect the resource, accepted options, scheme, network, asset, amount, receiving address (payTo), and timeout fields. Determine whether the client can support at least one offered option. - Check the retry and payload. Confirm that the retry includes
PAYMENT-SIGNATUREand that a compatible x402 client library generated the payload from the selected requirement. Cloudflare recommends using a client library rather than constructing the signed payload manually; see its Monetization Gateway documentation. - Separate verification from settlement. Inspect the outcome of each stage rather than treating a valid-looking payload as proof of success. The x402 flow can reject a payment during verification or fail later during settlement. The x402 documentation describes the flow.
- Check origin-side context when using Cloudflare’s gateway. The origin should validate the signed
PAYMENT-CONTEXTJWT before serving the resource. For variable-price origins, the actual charge is reported inPAYMENT-SETTLEMENT. These are gateway-to-origin headers, not x402 client headers. See Cloudflare’s gateway documentation. - Verify production facilitator and network support. Confirm that the facilitator supports the target network in production. The x402 Foundation says operators can choose a production facilitator, run one, or self-facilitate; do not assume the public x402.org facilitator is the default production route for mainnet EVM. See the x402 Foundation documentation.
For a specific failure, collect the actual request and response, decoded payment requirements, client and server versions, network, and facilitator response. Without those details, the protocol flow identifies plausible failure stages but cannot establish which one caused an incident.

Cloudflare Monetization Gateway: a current x402 example
Cloudflare documents Monetization Gateway as an x402 v2 implementation: it returns payment requirements, receives a signed authorization and retry, verifies the payment, lets the origin produce its response, settles through the Coinbase x402 Facilitator, and returns the resource. Cloudflare describes the gateway as being in closed beta and says buyers and sellers must be based in the United States.
