Two more suspects were released under judicial-control conditions. The orders are pretrial measures, not convictions.
Who was detained, and what is the current status?
The seven suspects appeared before a judge at the Istanbul courthouse in Çağlayan on Friday, 2 October, after being detained on Tuesday, 29 September. TRT Haber identified the five ordered detained as Gündoğdu, Emre Kosif, Ferdi Karadoruk, Yunus Yıldırım and Alican Sağlar. Sebahattin Şahin and Ahmet Şahin were released subject to travel bans and reporting requirements, according to TRT Haber.

What is the investigation about?
Justice Minister Akın Gürlek said prosecutors were examining alleged interference in referee administration. In an AFP report published by Al Jazeera, he described the inquiry as involving “interference in the processes of referee classification, assignments, scoring and appointments as well as the exams on rules”. That is the minister’s description of what prosecutors are examining, not a finding that manipulation occurred.

Reports also list alleged offenses including forgery of official documents, breach of trust and unlawful acquisition of personal data. TRT Haber additionally reports an allegation described in Turkish as “eziyet,” commonly translated as torture or torment. The available reporting does not include a charging document, and its summaries of the alleged offenses differ; precise legal characterization should therefore be treated with care.
What happened at the TFF’s VAR room?
Police inspected the video assistant referee (VAR) room at the TFF’s Hasan Doğan National Teams Camp and Training Facilities on 29 September. The TFF confirmed the inspection in a statement published on 30 September, and Turkish Minute reported that the probe involved current and former refereeing officials.

The federation said the inspection took place with the knowledge and participation of officials from relevant TFF departments, and that it was cooperating with judicial and law-enforcement authorities. It also rejected claims circulated on social media and elsewhere that digital materials in the Referee Affairs Department had been deleted before the inspection and recovered by police technical staff. The TFF said the claims were false and that the inspection’s purpose and scope would be assessed in line with the investigation. That is the federation’s account, not an independently established finding about the digital materials. Its statement is available in Turkish from the TFF.
Is this connected to the earlier referee betting case?
The current investigation follows a separate 2025 TFF action against 149 referees over alleged illegal betting. Al Jazeera’s AFP report and Turkish Minute describe the earlier suspensions as context, but reporting says it was unclear whether the betting probes were connected to the present investigation. The betting allegations should not be conflated with the current claims concerning referee classification, appointments, scoring, exams and other reported offenses.
