A 1,800-Kilometer Cloud Forms and Vanishes on Mars Each Day—What the New Study Found

The Arsia Mons Elongated Cloud is a seasonal water-ice formation that grows for hours and disappears before afternoon. A 2026 study suggests an unusual ice-forming process may explain it.

A seasonal water-ice cloud near Mars’s Arsia Mons volcano can stretch as far as 1,800 kilometers (about 1,118 miles) westward, then disappear before afternoon. A new study published in Nature Geoscience on October 7, 2026, argues that an unusual process called homogeneous ice nucleation may help explain it: the researchers’ model reproduces key features of the cloud when ice forms directly from water vapor, without a pre-existing particle. That is a strong model-based inference, not a direct measurement of cloud particles.

What is the Arsia Mons cloud?

The Arsia Mons Elongated Cloud (AMEC) is a water-ice cloud associated with Arsia Mons, a large Martian volcano. It is not a volcanic plume. Airflow shaped by the volcano can lift moist air; as that air rises and cools, water vapor condenses into ice. The cloud forms on the volcano’s western side and extends downwind. The European Space Agency describes its growth and daily cycle.

Its reported maximum length is about 1,800 km (1,118 miles), the measurement behind the rounded “1,000-mile” description. ESA reports a maximum width of 150 km. These are observed maxima, not a promise that the cloud reaches that size every day.

How can a cloud form and vanish every day?

A morning burst

During its active season, the cloud can begin forming before sunrise on Arsia Mons’s western slope. It grows westward for roughly 2.5 hours, then detaches from the region where it formed. In the studied Martian Year 34 case, the 2020 observational analysis measured expansion at about 170 meters per second—roughly 600 km/h—and estimated an altitude of 40–50 km. ESA summarizes the cloud’s altitude as about 45 km. The peer-reviewed observational study reports the measurements and their context.

Disappearance before afternoon

After detaching, the cloud dissipates before afternoon. Its dramatic size is therefore a short-lived daily event, not a permanent formation. The cycle recurs during the Martian southern spring and summer, around the season of southern solstice; individual appearances vary between years. ESA reported appearances recurring for 80 days or more in a season, while the longer observational analysis describes activity over several months.

What does “exotic physics” mean here?

Two routes to making ice

In the more familiar route, heterogeneous nucleation, water vapor freezes onto a pre-existing particle. The proposed alternative is homogeneous ice nucleation: ice forms directly from water vapor without such a seed particle. The new paper says this route requires very high supersaturation and had not previously been observed in nature. Its authors tested the mechanism in a Mars meteorological model; adding it reproduced distinctive AMEC characteristics that were difficult to reproduce with conventional cloud microphysics. They conclude that this result “strongly suggests” homogeneous nucleation occurs on Mars. The October 7, 2026, Nature Geoscience paper presents the study.

What the model result does—and does not—show

The finding is an inference from how well the model reproduces observed cloud features. It is not a spacecraft sampling the cloud and directly detecting ice nucleation. The authors say the result challenges assumptions about cloud formation for certain clouds on Earth and potentially other planets. That is narrower than claiming the process is impossible on Earth or that ordinary terrestrial orographic clouds behave like AMEC. The phrase “never seen on Earth” refers to the study’s claim that homogeneous nucleation had not previously been observed in nature, not proof that it cannot occur there.

Why did it take so long to understand the cloud?

The timing made AMEC difficult to observe. Many Mars orbiters follow sun-synchronous orbits that favor afternoon views of a given area, but the cloud grows in the morning and disappears before afternoon. Mars Express can observe at different local times, and its Visual Monitoring Camera (VMC) has a wide field of view suited to following a large feature through repeated life cycles.

The long-term observational study used 63 VMC observations alongside data from other Mars Express instruments and observations from MAVEN, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, Viking 2 and India’s Mars Orbiter Mission. ESA’s account of the observations explains the role of the VMC.

How the new explanation fits earlier modeling

A 2024 mesoscale-modeling preprint proposed a downslope windstorm followed by a hydraulic-like jump and a strong upward flow, with cooling of up to 30 K at 40–50 km. That model captured some behavior of the cloud head but did not reproduce the expanding tail or its observed optical depth. It is useful context for why the cloud has been challenging to explain, but it is not the new paper’s proposed nucleation mechanism or a complete, independently validated account. The 2024 preprint is available on arXiv.
