The roughly $1,000 figure refers to 0.36 ETH in diverted block tips—not to the 565,056 ETH that blockchain analytics firm Bitquery estimated was held by MetaMask-operated validators exiting or queued to exit. The roughly $5.04 billion figure is a hypothetical valuation of a much larger queue workload if that entire estimated cohort later sought fresh activation on top of Ethereum’s Oct. 7, 2026 entry backlog. It is not a confirmed theft, a realized loss, or a forecast that all the stake will return.
What happened in the MetaMask staking incident?
On Oct. 1, 2026, MetaMask said it was responding to an incident affecting part of its infrastructure and had taken the precaution of exiting affected validators with its partners. The company said that, based on its investigation to that point, there was “no indication that MetaMask wallets or customer funds have been affected.” That was a dated update while containment and verification were continuing; MetaMask did not state a root cause in the update covered here.

MetaMask also said its staking operation is non-custodial and that it does not manage clients’ withdrawal keys. Bitquery’s on-chain analysis identified 16,965 MetaMask-operated validators holding 565,056 ETH as exited or queued to exit in its early Oct. 1 snapshot. That is Bitquery’s estimate, not a total MetaMask confirmed in the reviewed reporting.

Bitquery measured 0.36 ETH in diverted block tips across 18 blocks and said those funds remained in the receiving wallet when it checked. Its analysis could not establish how the intruder entered or whether signing keys, rather than settings around them, were compromised. The available reporting does not establish that keys were stolen or that validators were slashed.

What does the “$1,000” figure represent?
CryptoSlate valued Bitquery’s 0.36 ETH tip measurement at about $923 using its Oct. 7 ETH price of $2,564.19. That is the basis for the headline’s rounded “$1,000” figure. It describes the measured tips, not the value of the estimated validator cohort or all funds involved in the incident.
How does the $5.04 billion queue scenario work?
CryptoSlate’s Oct. 7 snapshot showed 1,398,922 ETH waiting to enter staking. CryptoSlate then modeled a scenario in which the full 565,056 ETH Bitquery estimated as exited or queued to exit returns as additional demand for fresh activation:

| Quantity | What it represents |
|---|---|
| 1,398,922 ETH | ETH awaiting entry in CryptoSlate’s Oct. 7, 2026 snapshot. |
| 565,056 ETH | Bitquery’s estimate of MetaMask-operated stake exited or queued to exit in its early Oct. 1, 2026 snapshot. |
| 1,963,978 ETH | The sum if the entire estimated cohort is added to the observed entry backlog as new demand. |
| About $5.04 billion | The sum valued at CryptoSlate’s cited Oct. 7 price of $2,564.19 per ETH. |
This is a conditional calculation, not a measure of stolen principal, actual investor losses, or a protocol forecast. It assumes the full cohort seeks new activation, treats the observed entry backlog as fixed, and uses a one-day price snapshot. The reporting did not establish how much of the cohort would return, how much might already be represented in the entry queue, or how the backlog would change while withdrawals and deposits proceeded.

Ethereum’s validator exit queue and activation queue are separate. A validator leaving reduces active stake; it does not use entry capacity. Stake can add to entry demand only after it has exited, become withdrawable, and is deposited for activation again. Even then, it may return to Ethereum through a different operator.

CryptoSlate’s Oct. 7 calculation used entry capacity of 256 ETH per 6.4-minute epoch, or 57,600 ETH per day. At that rate, 565,056 ETH would occupy about 9.8 days of entry capacity if every ETH in the estimated cohort sought fresh activation. That capacity calculation is separate from the existing estimated entry wait of 24 days and seven hours; it is not a prediction of a specific depositor’s total wait.

Exiting is not the same as withdrawing
MetaMask’s staking help guide describes distinct stages: a validator submits an exit message, waits in the exit queue, and later has its balance swept so it becomes claimable. The sweep occurs through protocol state updates rather than a conventional user transaction. The guide’s approximate rates—3,375 validator exits per day and 1,800 activations per day—are labeled “at the time of writing,” so they should not be treated as permanent protocol constants.

The full cycle can outlast the exit queue
Lido expected its last affected validators to stop staking by Oct. 7, 2026. That date concerns validator exits, not the completion of withdrawals or any later restaking. CoinDesk reported Lido’s estimate that the full exit, withdrawal, and re-entry cycle could take up to about 45 days; it is an estimate, not a guaranteed wait for every depositor. Lido also said, as quoted by CoinDesk, “No action is required from stETH holders.”

| Oct. 7, 2026 — CryptoSlate | 1,398,922 ETH. | 822,405 ETH. | Entry wait estimated at 24 days and seven hours. |
CryptoSlate’s same Oct. 7 snapshot put total staked ETH at roughly 43.7 million, or 35.78% of supply. Both queue balances and estimated waits can move as validators enter and leave.
Quick Recap
What the figures do—and do not—show
- The measured 0.36 ETH in diverted tips is distinct from the 565,056 ETH cohort Bitquery estimated as exited or queued to exit.
- The cohort count is an on-chain estimate; MetaMask had not confirmed it in the reporting covered here.
- The $5.04 billion value is hypothetical queue demand priced at one snapshot, not a loss estimate.
- Only stake that is withdrawn and then deposited again adds new demand to the entry queue; the amount and timing of any return were not established.
