AI tools can generate 3D assets from text, images, or—in some workflows—a combination of both. The useful result is a starting model, not a promise of exact reconstruction or a finished asset. Choose an input, inspect the geometry separately from its surface appearance, refine it for its destination, and validate it in the application or slicer where you intend to use it.

What AI-generated 3D models can—and cannot—do

Text-to-3D lets you describe an object; image-to-3D uses a reference image to guide its appearance. Some tools also accept text and an image together, allowing the text to call out features the image does not show. Meshy documents these workflows in its 3D generation documentation, while Spline describes its text-and-image workflow in its AI 3D generation documentation.

These inputs communicate what you want; they do not guarantee an exact reconstruction. A single image also cannot show every side of an object. Treat the generated asset as a candidate to assess and, if needed, edit—not as proof that the intended shape, topology, or dimensions are correct.

How to create an AI-generated 3D model

1. Decide where the model will be used

Start with the destination: a visual concept, game or real-time scene, AR/VR experience, design reference, or physical print. That decision determines what matters most: silhouette, surface detail, texture, editability, optimization, or dimensional accuracy. Meshy lists uses across games, AR/VR, design, and 3D printing, but the target application still determines whether a particular output is suitable.

2. Choose text, image, or both

Use text to describe the subject, its essential features, and its visual style. Use a reference image when appearance is easier to show than describe. A combined input can be useful when the image leaves out a detail you need to specify in words.

Keep the brief focused: name one main object, describe its silhouette and important features, and provide a close-up reference if fine details matter. Spline recommends focusing on one object rather than a composition, and says organic forms tend to work better than forms with very sharp edges. These are prompt considerations, not guarantees of a particular result.

3. Generate candidates and inspect more than the preview

Generate a few candidates if the tool allows it, then rotate each model and inspect it from multiple sides. Check the outline, proportions, and visible defects under different lighting. A polished texture can make a lumpy or uneven shape look more convincing than it is.

In Spline, use Wireframe and Clay modes to inspect structure and shape without relying on the finished surface. Its documentation specifically warns that texture can hide an uneven shape and recommends checking the asset in another environment because preview lighting may differ from the final scene. The documentation also notes that the technology is developing and bugs or issues may occur.

4. Refine the asset for its job

Decide whether the model needs mesh edits, remeshing, material changes, texture work, or optimization in a downstream 3D application. Meshy documents texturing and remeshing functions, but having access to those tools does not mean every generated model will need the same edits—or that a generated mesh will already suit your pipeline.

Editability deserves its own check. An Autodesk Research-authored 2023 paper described generated representations that could be unfamiliar or difficult for designers to edit. That is historical research context, not a verified assessment of every current tool; test whether the particular asset can be refined in the software you use.

5. Export and open the file in its destination

Meshy documents the following format guidance. These are vendor-described use cases, not a guarantee that a file will behave identically in every receiving application.

Format Documented use What to verify
GLB Web, AR, and universal exchange Confirm that the receiving app reads the geometry and any included materials or textures.
FBX Unity, Unreal, and DCC tools Check import settings, materials, and scale in the target application.
OBJ Legacy and DCC workflows Check how the application handles associated surface and texture information.
STL 3D printing Meshy describes STL as geometry-only; do not expect it to carry surface color.
USDZ Apple AR Quick Look Open it in the intended Apple AR workflow and confirm the appearance.
3MF Color 3D printing Verify that the slicer and printer workflow support the color or material information you need.

Format recommendations and export options are documented by Meshy. Always check the exported asset in the actual destination application; a successful export alone does not establish compatibility.

Can you 3D-print an AI-generated model?

Potentially, but choosing STL or 3MF is only the beginning of print validation. A file that exports successfully may still need repair or adjustment before it can be printed. Meshy describes STL as geometry-only and 3MF as a color-printing option; the cited documentation does not certify generated meshes as printable.

  • Check scale and dimensions in the slicer.
  • Inspect the mesh for geometry problems and confirm that walls are thick enough for the intended printer and material.
  • Review support requirements and the slicer’s preview layer by layer.
  • For color printing, confirm that the format, slicer, and printer support the color or material data in the file.

Use the slicer preview to catch problems before committing to a physical print. A file extension is not a printability check.

How to evaluate a model or compare tools

There is no single score that captures whether a generated model is good for every job. A 2023 survey of 3D-generation research discusses fidelity, efficiency, consistency, controllability, diversity, and applicability as evaluation dimensions. Use those dimensions as prompts for a task-specific review, not as a current commercial-product benchmark.

  • Input fit: Does the tool accept the prompt, reference image, or combination you need?
  • Shape and fidelity: Does the silhouette match the intended object? Are proportions and important features present, and are there visible defects?
  • Surface appearance: Do texture and materials look right when assessed separately from the underlying geometry?
  • Consistency and control: Can you guide the output toward the required features and get results that are usable for your task?
  • Workflow compatibility: Does the export open correctly in the destination application, with the geometry and surface information you require?
  • Editability and effort: Can you make the needed changes in your existing 3D workflow, and is the work saved worth the effort?
  • Efficiency and applicability: Does the overall process meet the job’s needs? Speed alone is not quality.

The survey is available at arXiv:2305.06131. An Autodesk Research-authored paper published in 2023 discusses limitations of text-to-3D methods at that time, including challenges involving inference time and compute demands, diversity, fidelity, stylistic range, variable binding, and editability. Those observations describe research of that period, not a current ranking or blanket verdict on commercial tools; see the Autodesk Research paper.

The cited material does not establish a current independent head-to-head winner. Compare candidate tools and outputs against your own input needs, destination, and tolerance for editing rather than relying on a universal “best” label.

A short pre-use checklist

  • Is the model’s shape acceptable when texture and color are hidden?
  • Have you checked the full rotation, wireframe or structure, and appearance under relevant lighting?
  • Can you edit the asset as needed in your chosen 3D application?
  • Is the export format appropriate, and have you opened it in the target application?
  • If printing, have you checked scale, mesh integrity, wall thickness, supports, and slicer output?
