LangChain Alternatives: Choose a RAG Framework by Workload, Not Hype

Choose a RAG framework by the work it must do—not a universal ranking. See where LangChain, LlamaIndex, Haystack, and Microsoft Agent Framework fit, and how to test a shortlist.

There is no evidence-based universal winner among LangChain, LlamaIndex, Haystack, and Microsoft Agent Framework. Start with the job your application must do: document ingestion and retrieval, a composable search pipeline, a provider-flexible agent harness, or agent workflows in a Microsoft-oriented stack. Then test a shortlist on your data. A feature list can help identify candidates; it cannot predict which one will retrieve the right passages, produce better grounded answers, or cost less for your system.

How should you choose a RAG framework?

Choose for the dominant workload and your team’s operating constraints, not for popularity. RAG is a pipeline: documents must be parsed, divided into useful passages, indexed, retrieved for a question, and used to generate an answer. The framework matters, but so do the data, model, stores, deployment, evaluation, and monitoring around it.

Separate three decisions that are often bundled together: which framework controls the application pipeline, which models and data stores it connects to, and which products or services handle hosting, deployment, tracing, and evaluation. One framework may not cover every layer, and replacing one layer does not automatically replace the others.

Use the shortlist below as a way to decide what to evaluate. These are descriptions of documented product scope, not measured rankings of accuracy, speed, cost, or reliability.

Which framework fits each workload?

Workload or constraint Framework to evaluate What its documentation emphasizes What that does not establish
Document ingestion, indexing, retrieval, and question answering are central. LlamaIndex Its developer documentation covers RAG, ingestion, data connectors, indexes, querying, retrievers, evaluation, observability, agents, and deployment. Documentation coverage does not prove better answers, lower cost, or less implementation work on your corpus.
You want an explicit, composable search or RAG pipeline with reusable stages. Haystack Haystack describes an open-source framework built from components and pipelines for production-oriented agents, RAG, and multimodal search. Its documentation labels the project version 3.3. Haystack presents enterprise tracing, deployment, autoscaling, testing, and analytics as enterprise-platform capabilities; do not assume those are all part of the open-source framework.
You need a provider-flexible LLM application or agent harness, including LangGraph-backed capabilities. LangChain Its official documentation describes a standard model interface and configurable harness. Its agents are built on LangGraph, with durable execution, persistence, and human-in-the-loop support. LangSmith is its tracing, debugging, and evaluation product. The documented capabilities do not establish that LangChain is the best retrieval choice for a particular data set or that every layer is included in one product.
You need agents and graph-based workflows that fit a Microsoft-oriented environment. Microsoft Agent Framework Microsoft Learn describes agents, workflows, integrations, state management, context and memory, middleware, and MCP clients, and lists support for multiple model providers. Capabilities are not equally mature across languages: Microsoft identifies Go as public preview and says RAG is not yet available in its Go framework.

When is LlamaIndex preferable to LangChain?

For a document-centered application, put LlamaIndex on the shortlist when ingestion, indexing, retrievers, and querying are the core engineering work. Put LangChain on it when the wider LLM application or agent harness and its provider-flexible interface are central. The distinction is a useful starting hypothesis, not a hard boundary: LlamaIndex’s documentation also covers agents and deployment, while LangChain can be used in applications that retrieve documents.

If your use case is roughly 100 PDFs, that document count alone does not determine the framework. The relevant questions are how the PDFs are structured, whether tables or scans require special parsing, what metadata and filters matter, how questions map to source passages, and whether you need an agent or only retrieval followed by an answer. A small corpus can still expose difficult parsing or grounding problems.

When should you evaluate Haystack?

Evaluate Haystack when you want to assemble and inspect a pipeline from distinct, reusable components, especially for search or RAG. Check which capabilities belong to the open-source framework and which require the separate enterprise platform if you need tracing, deployment, scaling, testing, or analytics.

When should you evaluate Microsoft Agent Framework?

Consider it when its agents, workflow building blocks, integrations, and state-management features fit your environment. Verify the exact language implementation your team intends to use rather than assuming feature parity: Microsoft’s Go implementation is in public preview, and its RAG support is not yet available according to Microsoft Learn.

Are you comparing frameworks or platforms?

A framework comparison asks how you build and control the application: which components are available, how the pipeline or workflow is composed, and how models and stores are integrated. A platform comparison asks who operates capabilities such as hosted parsing or indexing, agent runtime, deployment, tracing, evaluation, and monitoring. Those capabilities may come from the framework vendor, a separate product, another provider, or software your team runs itself.

LangChain’s alternatives article, dated June 6, 2026, makes this framework-versus-platform distinction. It is a vendor-authored taxonomy, not an independent comparison; treat its judgments about where competitors stop as LangChain’s characterization. It names products and services such as Temporal, Langfuse, Braintrust, Arize, and Datadog among the wider platform landscape, but that does not make them drop-in framework replacements or establish that one is superior.

A hybrid stack can make sense if one tool better fits retrieval and another better fits orchestration. It also creates integration work: you must connect the stages, preserve useful traces and evaluation data, manage deployment boundaries, and account for upgrades and failures across products. Compare the whole operating arrangement, not only the framework names.

What should you compare before choosing?

Write down the requirements that can change the decision, then evaluate each shortlisted option against the same application and test cases.

  • Retrieval and grounding: Check parsing, chunking, metadata, sparse and dense or hybrid retrieval, reranking, filters, and whether answers are supported by the passages returned. Build representative questions with known relevant source passages.
  • Pipeline control: Determine whether you can inspect, replace, and customize each stage, including retrievers and post-processors. For agentic systems, assess control over graphs, workflows, state, and approval points.
  • Stack fit: Verify supported languages, model providers, vector and document stores, identity requirements, cloud environment, deployment approach, and compatibility with existing observability tools.
  • Need for agents: Decide whether the application truly needs tools, multi-step workflows, state, persistence, streaming, or human approval. If the job is retrieval followed by an answer, do not let agent features obscure the simpler pipeline you need.
  • Evaluation and operations: Check how you will create evaluation data, run regression tests, inspect traces, debug failures, monitor behavior, and route consequential answers for human review.
  • Total ownership: Include hosted versus self-managed services, integration and deployment effort, scaling, migrations, upgrades, and the number of separate products your team must operate.

How do you benchmark a shortlist on your own data?

Do a small, repeatable evaluation before switching frameworks or committing to a production design. The measurements below are recommended checks, not results from a controlled comparison of these frameworks.

  1. Build a representative test set. Include ordinary questions, questions about difficult or ambiguous passages, cases involving tables or scanned pages if relevant, and questions whose answers are absent from the corpus. Record the expected answer and the source passages that should support it.
  2. Hold the application conditions steady. Use the same documents, model, prompt, retrieval scope, and evaluation questions wherever the frameworks permit. Record meaningful configuration differences rather than quietly treating different setups as equivalent.
  3. Measure retrieval separately from answer generation. Check whether relevant passages appear in retrieved results, then assess answer correctness and whether the answer is grounded in those passages. This helps distinguish a retrieval failure from a generation failure.
  4. Exercise failure handling. Test missing or conflicting information, parser errors, empty retrieval results, tool failures if applicable, and any human approval or escalation route the application requires.
  5. Measure the complete operating path. Record latency and cost under your own workload, along with debugging effort, deployment complexity, maintenance, and integration burden. No general performance winner follows from the frameworks’ feature descriptions.
  6. Repeat after meaningful changes. Keep the evaluation set as a regression check when changing parsers, chunking, indexes, models, prompts, or framework versions.

What can the available documentation establish?

Official product documentation is useful for checking a framework’s stated scope, integrations, and feature boundaries. It cannot by itself demonstrate which tool will perform best on your workload. The reviewed material establishes no independent, controlled head-to-head winner for latency, token use, answer accuracy, cost, or reliability. Framework documentation changes, so verify version status and hosted-versus-self-managed feature boundaries when making a current implementation decision.
