V-Sync vs. G-Sync vs. FreeSync: What’s the Difference?

V-Sync synchronizes frame presentation; G-SYNC and FreeSync use variable refresh rate. The right option depends on your monitor, GPU, ports, and supported range.

V-Sync synchronizes frame presentation with a display’s refresh behavior; G-SYNC and FreeSync use variable refresh rate (VRR) to let a compatible display follow the GPU’s frame rate within a supported range. Which works best depends on the exact monitor, graphics card, connection, settings, and VRR range—not just the name on the box.

How the three technologies differ

Technology What it synchronizes What to know
V-Sync Frame presentation to the display’s refresh behavior Can prevent tearing, but conventional V-Sync may produce stutter when frame rate drops below the refresh cap. Turning it off can expose tearing when frame rate exceeds refresh. NVIDIA explains the tradeoff.
G-SYNC Monitor refresh rate to GPU frame rate NVIDIA offers processor-equipped G-SYNC displays and separately validates some VRR displays as G-SYNC Compatible. Requirements and settings vary by category. NVIDIA’s G-SYNC documentation.
FreeSync Display refresh rate to compatible GPU frame rate AMD’s technology uses standards including DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync and HDMI Variable Refresh Rate. Features depend on certification tier and model. AMD’s FreeSync overview.

V-Sync and VRR are not simply three names for the same switch. Conventional V-Sync works around a display’s refresh behavior; VRR changes the display’s refresh rate to track frame delivery within the monitor’s operating range. NVIDIA’s Adaptive VSync changes V-Sync behavior around the refresh cap, but it is a separate feature from G-SYNC.

What happens when frame rate changes?

With conventional V-Sync

When V-Sync is enabled, the game’s frames are presented in sync with display refresh, reducing tearing. NVIDIA says that if frame rate falls below the V-Sync cap, performance drops can produce stutter. With V-Sync disabled, a frame can be displayed while the monitor is refreshing, making a tear visible when frame rate is above refresh. These are NVIDIA’s described behaviors, not a guarantee that every game or setup will look identical.

With G-SYNC or FreeSync

Within a monitor’s supported VRR range, refresh rate can track the GPU’s changing frame rate rather than staying fixed. The range matters: check the exact model’s minimum and maximum supported rates and how it handles frame rates near those limits.

AMD’s Low Framerate Compensation (LFC), required for FreeSync Premium and Premium Pro according to AMD’s overview, addresses frame rates below a display’s minimum refresh rate by duplicating frames. For example, AMD says a 60–144 Hz display can show a 40 FPS game by doubling frames so the display synchronizes at 80 Hz. Check the specifications and notes for the specific display category and model.

G-SYNC, G-SYNC Compatible, and FreeSync are not identical labels

G-SYNC categories

NVIDIA describes G-SYNC displays as incorporating G-SYNC processors. G-SYNC Compatible displays use VRR and have been validated by NVIDIA; they do not thereby become processor-equipped G-SYNC displays. System requirements and setup vary by category, and the feature may need to be enabled in NVIDIA Control Panel. Consult NVIDIA’s G-SYNC information and the individual display’s specifications.

FreeSync tiers and standards

AMD lists FreeSync, FreeSync Premium, and FreeSync Premium Pro, with features that vary by tier. AMD says FreeSync can be delivered over DisplayPort and HDMI on certified displays, but support depends on the product and connection. VESA Adaptive-Sync certification is not the same as AMD FreeSync certification: a monitor carrying one label should not be assumed to have every feature associated with the other. See AMD’s certification and feature details and VESA’s Adaptive-Sync Display CTS r1.1a specification, dated May 19, 2023.

How to choose and set up the right mode

  1. Check the exact monitor model. Look up whether it supports the sync mode you want, its VRR minimum and maximum refresh rates, and any explicitly listed LFC or tier-dependent features.
  2. Confirm GPU compatibility. Check the graphics card’s support for the monitor’s mode; a label on the monitor alone does not establish compatibility with every GPU.
  3. Verify the connection and port. Support can differ by connection, port, and mode. Confirm the specific combination in the monitor and GPU documentation.
  4. Enable the monitor setting. Turn on the relevant option in the display’s on-screen menu. AMD’s setup guidance says to enable FreeSync on the monitor and check its status in AMD Software.
  5. Enable the GPU-side setting. NVIDIA documents enabling G-SYNC in NVIDIA Control Panel. Confirm the active display and selected mode there where applicable.
  6. Decide how to handle frame rates above refresh. AMD recommends V-Sync or a frame-rate cap for tear-free visuals if frame rate regularly exceeds display refresh. That is vendor setup guidance, not a universal best choice for every player or latency preference.

What the published counts do—and do not—tell you

AMD reported approximately 4,000 FreeSync-enabled displays as of November 2023; this is a dated figure, not a current market count. NVIDIA reported that 28 of 503 monitors tested passed G-SYNC Compatible validation in its first testing phase, published May 27, 2019. That is a historical result for that phase, not a current pass rate. The figures measure different things and should not be compared as if they describe the same population or period.
