An injectable ID chip is a small radio-frequency identification (RFID) transponder implanted under an animal’s skin. A compatible scanner reads the chip’s identification number; a separate registry can link that number to the animal and its contact details. The chip itself is not a GPS tracker.
How an injectable ID chip works
- Implantation: An appropriate veterinary professional implants the transponder. The correct chip and placement depend on the animal species and applicable requirements.
- Scanning: A compatible RFID scanner is passed over the animal to read the identifier. The scanner is a separate device, not part of the implanted chip.
- Registration: The identifier can be associated with animal and owner contact information in a registry. The manufacturer of the equine system described here recommends registering its chips; the number alone does not confirm current ownership or provide contact details. University of Wisconsin–Madison’s animal-identification guidance lists RFID transponders among identification options, while Microchip ID Systems’ equine FAQ describes its chip-and-scanner system and registration.
What the chip does—and does not do
An injectable ID chip provides an identification number that can be read with a compatible scanner. The cited descriptions do not establish that a basic ID transponder continuously broadcasts location, offers GPS tracking, or senses an animal’s health. Those are different functions and should not be inferred from the word “chip.”
Why the species and standard matter
“Injectable ID chip” is a broad description, not a specification for one universal product. The University of Wisconsin–Madison’s species table lists RFID transponders for animals including dogs, cats, livestock, horses, reptiles, amphibians, and fish, alongside other methods such as tags, tattoos, collars, and photo identification. Its notes also identify USDA qualifications for some methods. Requirements and suitable devices can vary by species, setting, jurisdiction, and event. See the university’s animal-identification guidance and confirm current local rules with a veterinarian or relevant regulator.
Product details should not be generalized across species. For example, the equine manufacturer describes a particular placement and specifications for its own horse products; those details do not establish a universal implantation site or chip standard. Its product-specific standards and approval statements should likewise be treated as claims about those equine products, not every injectable animal chip. Microchip ID Systems provides its equine product information.

Choosing an identification approach
No single method is established as best for every animal. When comparing an implanted transponder with visual identification such as a tag or tattoo, consider:
- The animal’s species and the setting where identification will be used.
- Whether permanent internal identification is needed.
- Whether a compatible scanner is available where the animal may be examined or recovered.
- Whether the identifier can be registered in a database that can provide useful, current contact information.
- Applicable regulatory, welfare, and event rules.
If a chip is appropriate, discuss product selection and implantation with a veterinary professional, and ask which scanners can read that specific chip. A retailer listing for a SafeMyPet product claims ICAR certification and ISO 11784/11785 compliance, but a listing is not independent confirmation of those claims. See the retailer’s product listing; do not treat it as a substitute for veterinary advice or verification of compatibility.
