You can run Windows on a Mac, but the right method depends first on its processor. Eligible Intel Macs can install Windows with Boot Camp and switch between Windows and macOS by restarting. Macs with Apple silicon—M1, M2, or M3—can run Windows 11 Arm in a virtual machine such as Parallels Desktop, or access a Windows 365 Cloud PC over the internet. Each route has different compatibility, licensing, and connectivity requirements.
Choose a method based on your Mac and how you need to use Windows
Check whether your Mac has an Intel processor or Apple silicon before choosing an installation method. Boot Camp is for eligible Intel Macs; Microsoft’s documented options for M1, M2, and M3 Macs are a Windows 11 Arm virtual machine or Windows 365 cloud access.

| Option | Mac and setup | Best suited to | Important checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boot Camp | Eligible Intel Mac; Windows occupies a separate partition, and you restart to change operating systems. | Using Windows directly on the Mac when restarting to switch is acceptable. | Confirm the exact Mac model, Windows support, available storage, installation-media requirements, and partition size. | Parallels Desktop | Apple silicon M1, M2, or M3 Mac; Windows 11 Arm runs in a virtual machine alongside macOS. | Switching between Mac and Windows applications without restarting. | Check whether your apps and peripherals work with Windows Arm, current Parallels authorization and version, Windows licensing, and any Windows features you need. | Windows 365 | A Mac streams a cloud-hosted Windows 11 Cloud PC; Windows is not installed as a local partition or virtual machine. | Organizational or remote access to a Windows desktop over a network. | Check organizational eligibility, current plan and pricing, availability, and network requirements. As Microsoft notes, “Windows 11 runs best on a PC designed for Windows.” A Mac can still be a practical way to use Windows, but the target app, its drivers, and the chosen setup matter as much as the Mac’s processor.

How Boot Camp works on an Intel Mac
Boot Camp Assistant prepares a Windows partition, downloads Windows support software for the Mac hardware, and guides installation. Windows and macOS do not run side by side in this arrangement: you choose which operating system to start when the Mac boots. Apple describes Boot Camp as a way to “install and use Windows on your Intel-based Mac.”

Check storage and model requirements first
- Apple’s Boot Camp guidance sets 64 GB of free storage as the minimum and recommends 128 GB or more for a better experience and room for automatic updates.
- Some older Mac models need an external USB flash drive of at least 16 GB for installation; many newer models do not. Whether you need one depends on the exact model and installation path.
- Choose the Windows partition size carefully. Apple’s setup instructions say it cannot later be resized through Boot Camp Assistant.
Apple’s cited installation article is specifically for Windows 10. It does not establish that every Intel Mac supports every current Windows release. Before installing, check Apple’s current instructions for your exact model and confirm that the Windows version you intend to use supports it.
How Windows 11 Arm works on Apple silicon
On M1, M2, and M3 Macs, the documented local route is to run Windows 11 Arm in a virtual machine. Microsoft identifies Parallels Desktop versions 18, 19, and 20 as authorized solutions for virtualizing Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise Arm on those Macs. That version list is specific to Microsoft’s cited authorization page; check the current page and Parallels version before installing.

A virtual machine lets Windows run in a window or alongside Mac apps without a restart, but it does not make Windows Arm identical to Windows running on a Windows PC. Microsoft says Windows 11 Pro requires its own license if you do not already have one, and each instance needs a unique license. Verify current licensing terms for your edition and situation.

Windows Arm apps may run natively or through emulation, but emulation does not solve every compatibility problem. Microsoft’s compatibility guidance identifies these limitations for the described Parallels environment on M1, M2, and M3 Macs:

Windows 365 streams a Cloud PC to a Mac rather than installing Windows locally. Microsoft presents it as an organizational service billed per user per month. It can suit someone who needs access to a managed Windows desktop without configuring a local Windows partition or virtual machine, but it depends on network access and the organization’s chosen service and plan. Check current availability, pricing, and eligibility with Microsoft or your organization; those details can change.
Quick Recap
Decide before installing
- Identify the processor. Use Apple menu > About This Mac. An Intel processor points to Boot Camp if the model and Windows version are supported; an M-series chip points to Windows 11 Arm virtualization or cloud access.
- Check the software you need. Ask the app maker or IT team about Windows Arm support, drivers, anti-cheat requirements, and required Windows features.
- Choose local or cloud access. Boot Camp and a virtual machine run Windows locally; Windows 365 streams a cloud-hosted desktop and needs a suitable network connection.
- Verify costs and requirements. Confirm Windows licensing, current virtualization software authorization, Boot Camp storage and model requirements, or your organization’s Windows 365 plan before proceeding.
