You can make 3D platformers easier to control on Nintendo Switch without buying anything: remap a troublesome button, adjust the camera deliberately, check the game’s own options, and calibrate a stick or motion input that behaves unexpectedly. The right setup depends on the game and the specific difficulty you want to address; there is no single layout that suits every player.
Remap buttons to reduce awkward reaches or repeated presses
Switch button mapping lets you move supported button inputs to other buttons or disable inputs. It can help when a particular button is hard to reach or a repeated action feels awkward. Change only the input that causes a concrete problem, keep the new layout easy to remember, and try it in a low-stakes part of a game before relying on it during a difficult section.
- Open System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Change Button Mapping.
- Select the controller you want to adjust, then choose Change.
- Choose a button and assign its input to another supported button, or disable it.
- Confirm the layout. You can save custom mappings as presets and restore the standard mapping from the same menu.
Nintendo says custom configurations are saved on the Switch system, not on the controller. The system supports up to five custom configurations per supported controller. Mapping works with Joy-Con and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller; Switch Lite buttons can also be remapped. These changes apply in nearly all console scenarios, including games, so remember that a changed layout may affect more than one title. Nintendo’s button-mapping instructions explain the options and limits.
Can you swap the control sticks?
The stick-input option can swap which side receives left- and right-stick input. It does not let you turn stick directions into button inputs. If a game’s camera or movement controls are confusing after a change, check its control display and your saved mapping before continuing.

Use the camera to make jumps easier to read
When a jump or route is hard to judge, use the right stick to inspect the landing area before moving. Practice camera movement and character movement separately, then combine them once each feels manageable. Nintendo offers this kind of control-guide and camera advice for Super Mario 3D All-Stars; treat it as a useful approach, not a universal camera setting for every platformer. Nintendo’s tips for Super Mario 3D All-Stars do not establish an ideal camera sensitivity, so start with the game’s defaults and adjust only if it offers an option that addresses your difficulty.
Calibrate a stick or motion input that seems inaccurate
If a character moves when you are not directing it, or a stick or motion input seems off, first check the game’s control settings. You can also follow the on-screen calibration process under System Settings > Controllers and Sensors. Calibration is a troubleshooting step: Nintendo’s instructions do not establish what caused a problem or guarantee calibration will fix it. If the behavior continues, the calibration result alone cannot identify the cause. Nintendo’s controller calibration instructions cover the on-screen steps.

Check a game’s motion-control alternatives and assistance options
Motion controls and accessibility options vary by game. Before changing your overall controller layout, look at the game’s control guide or options menu for a button alternative to the action that is difficult. In Super Mario Odyssey, motion actions coexist with button alternatives for most moves. The game also has Assist Mode: a 2022 Nintendo Life accessibility feature describes extra health, health recovery while standing still, recovery on safe ground after falling into a deadly hazard, protection from drowning, and story-guidance arrows. Those details apply to Odyssey, not automatically to other Switch platformers. Nintendo Life’s Super Mario Odyssey accessibility feature describes the game’s options.

|---|---|
