To choose an AI shopping assistant that can buy things for you, check what it is allowed to do after finding a product: recommend it, prepare checkout for your review, place an order after you approve it, or buy under a standing permission and spending limit. Then compare the stores it supports, the information it uses, the payment controls, and who handles the order if something goes wrong. “Can buy” does not mean the same thing across services, accounts, or markets.
Start by defining what “buy” means
A shopping assistant can be useful without having permission to pay. Before comparing products, decide how much control you want to delegate:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Research and recommendations: It helps find or compare products, but you complete checkout yourself.
- Checkout preparation: It fills or prepares a cart or checkout, then waits for you to review and approve the purchase.
- Purchase after approval: It can submit an order after you confirm the transaction.
- Standing permission: It can make eligible purchases without a separate approval each time, sometimes subject to a spending limit.
Confirm which mode is actually enabled for your account. A feature description may cover more than one mode, and the available controls can depend on the service, account, and market.
Compare assistants on the same criteria
Use the same questions for each candidate rather than judging it only by the quality of its recommendations.
#1 Best Overall
| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Purchase authority | Does it only recommend products, prepare checkout, ask for approval for each order, or allow purchases under a standing permission? Can you set a budget and revoke permission? |
| Retailer and catalog coverage | Are your preferred shops, product categories, and region supported? Is the product listing current, and does the assistant send you to a retailer or complete checkout in the assistant? |
| Product and order accuracy | Can you inspect the exact product and variant, seller, price, tax, shipping, availability, delivery details, and return or cancellation terms before payment? |
| Privacy and account permissions | Which profile, address, payment, and order details can the assistant access or share? Does it use personalization or memory? How do you disconnect it, and what happens to information already shared? |
| Payment safeguards | Does the service describe limited-use payment credentials, merchant or amount restrictions, approval prompts, or spending limits? Who handles a disputed charge? |
| After-sale help | Who accepts the order, takes payment, fulfills it, and handles returns, refunds, and customer support? Can the assistant show tracking or return-policy information? |
A protocol or security feature can describe how checkout information or credentials are passed; it does not establish that a product listing or order will be error-free. Read the seller’s terms and verify the transaction yourself.
What documented services illustrate
These examples show why it is important to compare actual capabilities rather than assume that every AI shopping assistant works the same way. Feature names, supported retailers, and eligibility can change; check the current app and account for your market.

| Service or example | What its cited documentation describes | What to verify before relying on it |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Instant Checkout | OpenAI announced Instant Checkout on September 29, 2025. For items that support it, the announcement says shoppers can confirm order, shipping, and payment details and complete a purchase in chat. OpenAI says merchants handle orders, payments, fulfillment, returns, and customer support through their existing systems; the announcement describes user confirmation at each step and payment tokens limited to specific amounts and merchants. | Whether Instant Checkout is available for your account, market, and chosen item; which merchant is selling it; and the final seller-provided order terms. These are OpenAI’s descriptions of its system, not a guarantee for other assistants. |
| Shop-connected agents | Shop’s Help Center describes product search, checkout preparation, order approval, reordering, tracking, and return-policy checks, depending on connected features. By default, the agent prepares checkout for approval. Shop also describes optional permission for purchases without manual approval, with weekly, monthly, or total budgets that can be revoked. | Which features are connected, what the agent can access or share, and the actual approval and budget settings in your account. Shop says the third-party agent’s own terms and privacy policy govern information it receives; disconnecting stops access but does not delete information already shared. |
| Amazon Alexa for Shopping | About Amazon says Rufus was renamed Alexa for Shopping on May 13, 2026, and describes recommendations, price tracking, comparisons, reorders, and agentic purchasing. Amazon also describes “Buy for Me” for select products on brand websites when those products are not sold in Amazon’s store. | The current name, eligible products, purchasing steps, and feature availability in your Amazon app and account. The documented description does not establish a country-by-country availability list. |
| Claude for commerce example | Anthropic documents an open-source reference implementation, not a supported hosted consumer shopping service. Its example can search a catalog, compare items, fill a cart, and hand off to checkout, which is staged for confirmation in the merchant app. | Do not treat this implementation example as a consumer service you can simply sign up for; distinguish a build-your-own blueprint from a supported shopping assistant. |

Check the order before it is placed
Do not approve a purchase based only on a conversational summary. Shop’s Help Center warns: “Agents and agentic platforms might make mistakes, misunderstand your instructions, or display inaccurate product, price, tax, shipping, availability, or return information.” Treat the checkout screen and the seller’s policy as the final checkpoints.

Understand what happens to your information
Before connecting an agent, inspect the permission screen and the service’s privacy terms. Depending on the integration, information may include contact and shipping or billing details, limited payment-method details, purchase approval details, order information, or information used to personalize results. Shop’s Help Center says that once information is sent to a third-party agent, that party’s own terms and privacy policy govern its use. It also says disconnecting stops access but does not delete information already shared.
- Grant only the account access needed for the tasks you want.
- Find out whether order history or personalization is involved, not just what is shared at checkout.
- Check how to disconnect the agent and separately ask how to request deletion of information already received.
- For payment, look for a clear explanation of credential handling and any merchant, amount, approval, or budget limits. Do not assume another service offers the controls described by OpenAI or Shop.
Choose settings for the way you shop
If you want product research but no automated checkout
Choose a recommendation or comparison workflow and leave purchasing to the retailer’s normal checkout. Avoid enabling standing purchase permission. If an assistant can prepare checkout, confirm that it still waits for your approval.

If you want help with occasional purchases
A checkout that pauses for your review gives you a chance to verify the item, seller, total, delivery, and return terms before payment. Check that the assistant’s supported stores include the retailers you actually use.
If you want to delegate repeat, low-cost orders
Use standing permission only if the service provides limits that fit your needs and makes revocation clear. Set the narrowest practical budget and review the order and account activity afterward. A spending limit is a control, not a substitute for confirming that the right product and seller are eligible.
What survey figures can—and cannot—tell you
Visa’s 2025 page attributes three figures to its report, Earning Consumer Trust in the Age of Agentic Commerce: Understanding how AI assistants are reshaping the buyer journey: 73% of U.S. consumers use AI instead of search engines and other traditional methods to discover products; 55% of U.S. consumers are familiar with AI shopping assistants; and 50% of consumers worry about data security with AI shopping agents. These are Visa-attributed figures, not a measure of the quality or safety of any individual assistant; the cited page does not establish the underlying report methodology here.
