Opened whiskey does not have a single, scientifically established expiration date. It can remain drinkable while its aroma, flavor and sometimes color gradually change. Brand and specialist guidance ranges from a few months to several years, so treat those figures as quality recommendations—not a universal deadline.
How long do different sources recommend?
Recommendations vary because they describe expected quality rather than a measured shelf-life cutoff. The figures below apply to the sources’ own guidance; they are not guarantees that every bottle will taste the same for that long.
| Source | Opened-bottle guidance | What the guidance means |
|---|---|---|
| The Glenlivet, US FAQ | Enjoy within three to six months. | The Glenlivet says subtle flavor changes may appear after that period because of oxidation. This is its recommendation, not a universal whisky standard. |
| The Glenlivet, general FAQ | Best enjoyed within six months. | The FAQ says the whisky can still be drunk afterward, though oxidation may cause subtle changes in color and flavor. |
| Whisky.com, “Whisky: Stability and Storage” | About six months to one year. | The guide says oxygen can change the taste over time. It describes a possible loss of flavor, not whiskey becoming bad at a set date. |
| Dewar’s FAQ | Quality can last several years. | Dewar’s says flavor may gradually change through oxidation. |
| Suntory customer FAQ | No fixed period stated. | Suntory says the duration depends on storage and handling, so it cannot be stated uniformly. |
These recommendations cannot be reconciled into one exact number: none establishes a universal experimental limit for opened whiskey. Use the range as context, and judge an individual bottle by how it has been stored and whether its aroma and flavor remain appealing.
What changes after opening?
Each time a bottle is opened, its contents are exposed to air. The sources describe gradual changes to aroma and flavor, and sometimes color. Suntory also notes that alcohol can evaporate and the flavor balance can shift. These are quality changes, not evidence of a guaranteed safety deadline.

The available guidance does not establish a precise timetable by whiskey style, alcohol strength or how full the bottle is. It is therefore not possible to say that a particular style or proof will reliably last longer based on these sources.
How to store an opened bottle
- Close it securely after pouring. Limiting the bottle’s exposure to air is a practical way to reduce ongoing changes.
- Keep it upright. Jameson advises upright storage because prolonged contact with whiskey’s high alcohol content can damage the cork and affect flavor.
- Choose a cool, stable location away from sunlight and excessive heat. The Glenlivet recommends a cool, odor-free, ventilated place; Whisky.com also advises dark storage.
- Avoid damp conditions. Damp storage may damage the label or closure.
What to do with a nearly empty bottle
A nearly empty bottle contains more air space relative to the whiskey than a fuller one. Whisky.com suggests carefully transferring the remaining whiskey into a smaller bottle to reduce that space. Use a clean glass bottle with a tight-fitting cap, and transfer slowly to avoid bubbling the whiskey. This can reduce air space, but it does not guarantee that flavor will remain unchanged or add a specific amount of storage time.

There is no single date at which every opened bottle must be discarded. If the whiskey’s aroma or flavor has changed in a way you do not enjoy, its quality has declined for your purposes; the cited recommendations do not define an exact point at which that happens. Keep the bottle sealed and stored appropriately, and use brand-specific timing as guidance rather than a pass-or-fail expiration rule.
