An email verification API can include that check, but may also assess syntax, DNS, mailbox-existence confidence, role addresses, and other signals. A negative disposable result does not prove that an address exists, will accept mail, or belongs to a trustworthy user.
What each API is designed to answer
Disposable email detection
A detector asks whether an email address—or, for some services, its domain—is associated with a known disposable or temporary-mail provider. Depending on the service, the response may be a simple yes/no result or may include confidence, relay or alias signals, and bulk-processing options.
Email verification
Verification is a broader category of address-quality checks. Implementations may examine syntax, DNS configuration, mailbox-existence confidence, role-account status, disposable domains, or patterns associated with random input. The exact scope varies by provider, and a verification result is not a guarantee that a message will be delivered.
Where they overlap
Disposable detection can be one component of verification. The distinction is therefore not simply “basic” versus “accurate”: it is whether the service returns the signals your workflow actually needs. A detector returning “not disposable” has not thereby established that the mailbox exists, accepts mail, or is safe to trust.

How the documented API examples differ
These examples illustrate documented capabilities, not independently measured accuracy. A provider’s feature list should not be treated as a comparative benchmark.
| Service | Documented scope or workflow | What to note |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon SES Email Validation API | AWS documents syntax, DNS, mailbox-existence, role-address, disposable-domain, and random-input evaluations. Its SES API v2 guide describes the GetEmailAddressInsights operation and HIGH, MEDIUM, and LOW confidence verdicts. |
AWS describes these as validation and risk signals; the verdicts are not an independent accuracy assessment or a delivery guarantee. |
| DISIFY | Documentation describes syntax, mail-DNS, and disposable-address indicators, with entry points for domain checks, privacy-relay detection, bulk validation, public blacklists, plus-alias detection, and scoring. | Check current plan requirements for paid capabilities. |
| TempMailChecker | A focused disposable check that returns a temp boolean. |
Its documentation explicitly says a false result does not prove mailbox existence, mail acceptance, or trustworthiness. It advises separating disposable checks from free-provider, relay, alias, role-account, IP-reputation, and SMTP-mailbox checks. |
| API Layer | An authenticated REST endpoint for checking whether an address is disposable. | The documentation requires HTTPS and an API key and describes subscription rate limits; verify current limits and terms. |
| Disposable Armor | Documentation describes full-email and domain checks, allowlisting, and optional paid email-quality analysis. | Published risk-score thresholds are that vendor’s guidance, not a cross-provider standard. The provider also disclaims guaranteed 100% accuracy. |
Which type fits your workflow?
Signup screening
Start by deciding what you want to detect: disposable-provider use, malformed addresses, undeliverable domains, role accounts, automated patterns, or a combination. Select only the checks that support that policy. If disposable use is the sole concern, a focused detector may be sufficient; if you need several address-quality signals, consider a broader verifier whose documented checks match those needs.

List cleaning and sending
For list-cleaning or sending workflows, do not treat a disposable-domain result as full verification. Confirm that the service performs the additional checks you need and understand how it defines any confidence categories or scores. A provider-specific threshold should not be read as a probability unless the provider explicitly defines it that way.
What to compare before choosing
- Input: Does the API accept a full email address, a domain, or both?
- Checks: Does it return only disposable status, or also the syntax, DNS, mailbox-existence confidence, role-account, alias, relay, or other signals your policy requires?
- Output: Is the result a boolean, separate component checks, an explanation, a confidence verdict, or a score? Ask how the provider defines scores and thresholds.
- Workflow: Does it support synchronous signup-time checks, bulk processing, or both?
- False positives: Can you allowlist addresses or domains, handle relays separately, or route uncertain cases to manual review? Consider the impact of blocking legitimate users.
- Operations: Check current quotas, rate limits, latency commitments, error behavior, and total service cost directly with the provider.
- Data handling: Before sending personal data, confirm current retention and geographic-processing terms with the provider.
Implement the check without turning it into a trust verdict
- Set the policy first. Define which outcome you want to prevent and what evidence is sufficient to take action. A disposable match can be one risk signal rather than an automatic account-trust decision.
- Call the service from your backend. Keep API credentials server-side; do not expose them in browser or mobile-client code.
- Handle errors deliberately. Decide what the signup flow does on timeout or provider error. A timeout must not silently become a verified result, but an outage also need not automatically block every legitimate signup. Fail-open and fail-closed are policy choices, not universal rules.
- Choose proportionate outcomes. Depending on product risk, consider allowlisting, additional address confirmation, or review rather than blanket rejection. Test the policy against your own abuse risks and user experience requirements.
What an API result can and cannot establish
The Amazon SES Developer Guide says: “API validation allows you to validate individual email addresses through API calls, providing immediate feedback about address validity, deliverability, and risk factors.” Read this as a description of the validation signals AWS documents, not as a promise that every address will receive mail. More generally, vendor documentation explains product capabilities; it does not establish comparative accuracy across providers. No general market-wide accuracy or bounce-reduction figure is established by the cited vendor material.
