Choose copper wire by starting with the load and installation—not by matching an amp rating to a gauge chart. The right conductor must satisfy the applicable ampacity rules after installation-specific adjustments, fit the wiring method and equipment terminals, and keep voltage drop acceptable over the actual run. Without those details, no single gauge is a safe universal answer.
What determines the right copper wire size?
Gauge describes conductor size, but it does not by itself determine how much current a wire may carry. Usable ampacity depends on conductor material, insulation and cable type, installation conditions, ambient temperature, the number of current-carrying conductors, and the temperature ratings of connected equipment. The governing local electrical code and the wiring method also matter.

Insulation temperature ratings are not automatic permission to use the corresponding ampacity. Equipment terminals or a cable type may impose a lower limit. The final selection must respect the most restrictive applicable condition, including any required correction or adjustment factors. Cerrowire’s ampacity calculator guidance explains these interacting limits and says its calculator is based on 2020 NEC requirements; that does not establish compliance with a later edition or local amendments.
Use ampacity figures as conditional table values
The following copper conductor values appear in NFPA 2026 report material. They illustrate how the listed ampacity changes with the temperature column; they are not stand-alone permissions for a particular circuit. Actual allowed ampacity can be lower because of terminal ratings, cable limitations, correction and adjustment factors, or other applicable code requirements.

- Exact Gauge And Length You Can Plan Around: This copper wire spool holds 100ft / 30.48 m of 24 AWG copper wire measuring 0.02inch/ 0.5mm in diameter. Remember the higher the gauge number, the thinner the wire — if this thickness is not the one your project needs, the size menu above covers 16 gauges from heavy 4 AWG to fine 34 AWG so you can pick by load instead of guessing
- Made For Wire Wrapping And Jewelry Making: A practical length of copper wire for jewelry making, this gauge threads through most beads and bends into tight coils by hand Use it for wire wrapping, jump rings, ear wires, beaded bracelets, pendant frames and chain links. Fine enough to loop repeatedly without fighting the wire, so it suits both first projects and detailed copper jewelry wire designs
- 99.9% Pure Bare Copper, No Coating To Strip: Made of 99.9% pure copper wire with no insulation, so you can cut and shape it straight off the spool with regular pliers instead of stripping a jacket first. As uncoated bare copper wire it conducts well and gradually darkens into a natural patina with air exposure — a normal property of raw copper rather than a defect, and a tone many makers keep on finished pieces
- One Spool For Craft, Garden And Hobby Projects: Beyond copper jewelry making supplies, this soft copper wire works for electroculture garden antennas, plant and bonsai shaping, floral arranging, model and sculpture armatures, holiday DIY decor, weaving and low-voltage hobby circuit connections. Pair it with a thicker or thinner gauge from the same size menu when a project needs both a frame wire and a detail wire
- Easy To Bend, Store And Handle: The wire bends readily and holds the shape you set, and it ships on its own spool so the wire stays untangled on a bench and travels easily in a craft bag. Spool style may vary, wire length is the same either way. Safety note: this is uninsulated bare wire and cut ends can be sharp — wear gloves or handle cut pieces carefully

A practical selection sequence
- Define the circuit. Establish the load and expected current, circuit voltage and configuration, whether the load is continuous, and the application. A gauge chart without these inputs cannot settle the choice.
- Identify the permitted wiring method. Determine conductor material, insulation or cable type, and environment. Individual THHN/THWN-2 conductors, nonmetallic-sheathed cable, and flexible cord can be subject to different requirements and assumptions.
- Use the governing code and table. Find the ampacity rule for the locally adopted code edition and wiring method. Base table values apply only under their stated conditions.
- Apply installation corrections and adjustments. Account for ambient temperature, the number of current-carrying conductors, and other applicable conditions using the relevant code provisions. Do not assume a published chart already reflects the installation.
- Check all temperature limits. Verify actual equipment terminal ratings and the applicable limit for the wire or cable type. Do not infer a usable circuit rating from the insulation marking alone.
- Check voltage drop. Use the actual current, circuit configuration, and one-way run length. A longer run can require a larger conductor even when the ampacity check alone appears adequate.
- Confirm the complete design. Check the result against the adopted code, local amendments, and equipment instructions. For fixed wiring or uncertain conditions, have a qualified electrician or electrical designer determine the requirements.
Why distance and voltage drop can change the choice
Voltage drop increases with current and conductor length. That means a conductor can meet an ampacity requirement and still be a poor choice for a long run. Check the actual circuit with a voltage-drop method or table, rather than assuming that the ampacity chart addresses distance. Cerrowire provides voltage-drop tables alongside its guidance that long runs warrant consideration.

Voltage-drop guidance is jurisdiction-specific. The Institution of Engineering and Technology’s 2020 discussion describes 3% for lighting and 5% for other uses in the UK BS 7671 18th edition context. Those figures should not be treated as universal limits or as current US NEC wording; apply the rules and design guidance relevant to the installation’s location and code edition.

A product phrase such as “12 AWG THHN copper wire” identifies some characteristics, not whether it is right for a particular circuit. Match the product to the specified wiring method and verify its markings and listing before use.

Why a gauge chart cannot give a universal answer
A chart may show a nominal ampacity under defined conditions, but it cannot determine whether those conditions match a real installation. A particular sizing decision also needs the load, voltage and circuit configuration, conductor length, wiring method, insulation type, ambient conditions, current-carrying conductor count, terminal ratings, jurisdiction, and adopted code edition. If those are unknown, treat any gauge suggestion as a starting point—not a final design.
