For fast USB file transfers, choose a cable that explicitly states a data rate supported by both your computer or other host and the device you are connecting. Check that the connector ends fit, too. A USB-C plug alone does not tell you how fast the cable transfers data, and a faster cable cannot make slower equipment transfer faster.
USB-C tells you the connector shape, not the data speed
USB Type-C is a connector type, not a speed rating. USB-IF says the terms are not interchangeable: a USB-C cable may support USB 2.0 data, USB 3.2 rates, or USB4, depending on its design and specification. USB-IF’s Type-C guidance says a USB 2.0 Type-C implementation supports up to 480Mbps; the connector by itself does not establish a higher rate. USB-IF’s Type-C language guidance explains the distinction.
Look for an explicit data-rate marking or specification rather than relying on terms such as “USB-C,” “fast charging,” or the cable’s appearance. USB-IF’s consumer guidance uses these performance labels: 5Gbps, 10Gbps, 20Gbps, 40Gbps, and 80Gbps. USB-IF’s data-performance guide recommends these consumer-facing rate names instead of specification terms such as USB 3.2, USB4 Version 2.0, SuperSpeed Plus, or SuperSpeed+.
Choose a speed your devices can both use
A USB connection depends on the host, cable, and device. The connected equipment must support the desired mode, and the connection uses the best capability they share—not simply the highest number printed on the cable. USB-IF describes USB4 as scaling to the best mutual capability of the connected devices, with compatibility for USB 3.2, USB 2.0, and Thunderbolt 3 hosts and devices. Its overview describes up to 80Gbps operation with 80Gbps-certified cables. USB-IF’s USB4 overview has the compatibility details.

For example, pairing a 40Gbps cable with a device whose documentation specifies only USB 2.0 will not make that device transfer at 40Gbps. Check the documentation for both ends before paying for a higher-rated cable. USB-IF’s current USB 3.2 overview lists 5Gbps, 10Gbps, and 20Gbps capabilities; the consumer-facing comparison also includes 40Gbps and 80Gbps USB4 rates.
Compare cable options by the job
| Stated cable data rate | When it makes sense | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 5Gbps | Choose it when both connected devices support this tier and it meets your transfer needs. | Confirm both device specifications and the connector ends. |
| 10Gbps | A practical middle choice when both devices support 10Gbps and you want a clearly specified data cable. | Confirm the 10Gbps data rate is stated separately from any charging claim. |
| 20Gbps | Useful only when both devices and the cable support this rate. | Check that the host and device documentation specify a compatible mode. |
| 40Gbps or 80Gbps | Consider for compatible USB4 equipment that supports the corresponding rate. | Verify the exact rate supported by the host, cable, and device; higher cable capability alone does not raise the others. |
These are signaling-rate labels, not promised file-copy speeds. Actual throughput depends on the complete connection and workload. The USB-IF rate guidance does not establish a specific transfer time for a particular computer, drive, or file set, so do not convert a cable’s Gbps label into a guaranteed copy-time estimate.

Keep data rate separate from charging power
Power and data are different specifications. A 60W or 240W marking describes a cable’s power capability, not its file-transfer rate. USB-IF’s cable guidance calls for power markings on compliant USB-C-to-USB-C cables and, except for USB 2.0 High-Speed cables, data-rate markings as well. Look for the data rate separately when shopping for file transfers. USB-IF’s cable and connector guidance covers cable capabilities and markings.

A quick checklist before buying
- Check both devices. Find the supported USB data rate and connector type in the host and device specifications.
- Pick a sufficient rate. Choose the lowest cable tier that meets the job and is supported by both ends; a higher advertised rate is useful only if the rest of the connection supports it.
- Match both plugs. Confirm the connector at each end rather than assuming “USB-C” describes the whole cable’s capabilities.
- Read the data claim. Make sure the listing states a data rate explicitly, separately from charging wattage.
- Check certification if useful. Search USB-IF’s certified product list when you want to verify a product’s certification status. The public list defaults to products certified within the last two years, so inspect the current listing details. Certification does not add speed that your devices do not support. Why a fast-rated cable may still transfer slowly
- One connected device is the limit. The connection cannot exceed the capabilities shared by the host, cable, and device.
- The cable’s data rate is unclear. A USB-C connector or high-wattage charging label does not establish fast data support.
- The rate is being mistaken for file-copy speed. Gbps labels describe signaling capability; they do not guarantee real-world throughput or a particular transfer time.
