Track batting, bowling and fielding figures over time, but compare them only with players in a similar role, format and level of competition. Batting average and scoring rate show different things; for bowlers, wickets and economy belong together. These numbers can help make a selection case, but no universal statistical cutoff guarantees selection: role fit, team balance and observed skills matter too.
Which batting statistics should you record?
For every innings, log runs, batting position, balls faced where available, and whether you were dismissed. Keep innings played, not-outs, highest score, and counts of fifties and hundreds. From these, track batting average and, in limited-overs cricket, strike rate.

Average describes runs per dismissal; strike rate describes scoring pace. Neither is a substitute for the other. Include the role and match situation with each entry so an opener, middle-order batter and finisher are not compared as if they had the same job. Which bowling statistics matter?
Record overs or balls bowled, runs conceded and wickets, then track bowling average, economy rate and strike rate. Include best figures as a reference, not as a replacement for the full season record. Wickets show how often you take a batter out; economy shows how many runs you concede per over; strike rate shows how many balls it takes, on average, to take a wicket.

Read these figures in the context of the format and role. Economy can be especially important in limited-overs cricket: the ICC says its limited-overs ratings give it significant weight, particularly in T20s. A wicket tally alone therefore gives an incomplete account of a bowler’s contribution. See the ICC explanation of ranking methodology.
How should you record fielding and wicketkeeping?
Keep scorecard-attributed catches, stumpings and run-outs, but pair them with coach observations or video review notes about reliability, positioning and missed chances. Raw dismissal totals depend on the opportunities a player receives, so they cannot fully represent fielding or keeping skill.

The ICC says it does not rate wicketkeepers from catches and stumpings because those chances partly depend on bowlers, and it notes that historical missed-chance data are not accurate. Its Player Rankings FAQ explains the limitation: “No accurate details are kept historically on missed chances, and in any case what is a missed chance?”

What context belongs beside every performance?
Label records with date, format, competition level, role, opponent and venue or conditions when known. Keep recent form, season figures and career totals available together. A recent run can be encouraging, but a short sample is volatile; longer records show whether it is part of a sustained pattern.

Opposition strength and scoring conditions also affect interpretation. The ICC’s international ranking methodology weights recent performances while retaining career evidence, and adjusts how performances are valued for factors including match scoring and opponent strength. It uses slightly different factors across formats, so do not treat a T20 rate as directly comparable to a multi-day figure.
How do you compare your record with another player?
- Match format and role. Compare like with like: for example, a top-order batter with another top-order batter in the same format.
- Match the competition level and workload. Averages and rates can mislead when one player has had far fewer opportunities. Show totals alongside rates.
- Use the same time window. Compare recent form with recent form, and season with season; retain career figures as wider context.
- Account for opposition and conditions. Runs scored in an easy-scoring match are not automatically equivalent to runs scored when batting was difficult.
- Separate primary and secondary roles. Present batting and bowling records independently before describing all-round value or another useful skill.
Do these statistics guarantee selection?
No universal domestic selection threshold is established by the available sources. Statistics help show performance and consistency, but selectors also judge role fit, team balance and skills that a scorecard may not capture. Follow the criteria published by your own competition or association where available.

No. In a 2016 explanation of its international ranking scale, the ICC described ratings above 900 points as a “supreme achievement,” 750-plus as normally sufficient for the world top ten, and 500-plus as a “good, solid rating.” Those figures describe the ICC’s international ratings, not domestic selection cutoffs.
