Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Port color and connector shape are only clues. If you want to know how fast a device is connected right now, use an operating-system diagnostic; that current link speed is not the same as the port’s maximum capability.
Start with the exact computer model
- Identify the model. Check your system information, the label on the computer, or the manufacturer’s account page.
- Open the manufacturer’s specifications or manual for that model. Compare the listed USB standards and maximum data rates for its ports. Note any distinctions among USB-A, USB-C, USB4, and Thunderbolt ports.
- Check markings on the computer. A symbol or speed marking may help identify a port, but confirm what it means in the model’s manual or specifications.
For Macs, Apple’s guide to identifying Mac ports directs users to the specifications for the exact model. Owners of other computers should consult their own manufacturer’s documentation.

Why USB-C and port color are not enough
USB-C describes the connector’s shape, not a guaranteed data speed. USB Type-C ports can support different USB speeds and alternate modes, so the connector alone does not tell you whether a port supports a particular speed, USB4, or Thunderbolt. Check the computer’s model-specific specifications; Microsoft explains the range of Type-C capabilities in its USB Type-C connector FAQ.
Port colors are also unreliable as a universal guide. The reviewed official documentation does not establish a color convention that applies across computer makers. Treat color as a hint only when your computer’s manufacturer documents its meaning.

Maximum port rating versus current connection speed
The specification tells you the port’s rated capability. A system diagnostic tells you how a device is connected at that moment. The current connection depends on the whole chain: the port and host controller, device, cable, any hub or adapter, firmware, and the workload. A lower reported speed does not by itself prove that the port lacks a faster mode.
For example, Microsoft lists a USB 2.0 hub or cable, firmware, and host-controller routing among possible reasons a SuperSpeed device may operate at a lower speed. Its USB in Windows FAQ explains these fallback causes. Microsoft’s USB device descriptor documentation also describes how devices can report different descriptor information at different connection speeds.

Check the speed of a connected device
Windows
Microsoft identifies USBView, available with the Windows Driver Kit, as a diagnostic for checking whether a connected device is operating at SuperSpeed. Use it to inspect the current connection, not to infer the port’s maximum rating. The Microsoft FAQ includes some Windows 8-era interface instructions; those should not be treated as current Windows 11 click-path guidance.
macOS
For a Mac’s maximum port capability, use the exact model’s specifications, as Apple recommends. The cited Apple guide does not provide a general current-link-speed procedure comparable to USBView or Linux’s USB utilities.

Linux
The lsusb(8) manual documents two useful views of devices connected now:
lsusb -tprints the physical USB device hierarchy as a tree, helping show how devices are connected through buses and hubs.lsusb -vdisplays verbose device descriptors, including information about the device’s current speed.
These commands describe the devices and connections present at the time you run them; they are not a complete inventory of every port’s maximum rated capability.

If a fast device is connecting slowly
- Connect the device directly to the computer, bypassing hubs and adapters.
- Check that the device itself supports the speed you expect and that the cable is suitable for that connection.
- Use the operating-system diagnostic available for your platform to check the current connection.
- Compare candidate ports using the same device and cable. If you compare file transfers, repeat the same transfer under the same conditions; the result reflects the device and full connection chain, not just the port.
- If the connection remains slower than expected, consult the computer maker’s support guidance. Firmware or host-controller routing may also affect operation.
A fast USB 3.2 Gen 2 flash drive can serve as a comparison device, but its result is still limited by the drive and every other part of the connection. A transfer test cannot establish the port’s maximum capability on its own.

- Rated data rate: Compare the maximum rate listed by the manufacturer for each port.
- Standard and features: Note the supported USB standard and any separately listed USB4 or Thunderbolt capability.
- Connection path: Check whether a hub or adapter is involved; controller routing can matter.
- Current link: If you are troubleshooting a particular device, check the negotiated connection speed with that device and cable.
Check charging, display output, and alternate-mode support separately. A port’s data speed does not establish those capabilities. For terminology and specifications, USB-IF’s document library lists USB and Type-C specifications; for a particular computer, its model-specific documentation is the practical source for what its ports support.
