They are not equivalent, turnkey multi-agent orchestration suites: the controller manages devices and automations, while an agent is an additional interface that may interpret requests and call the controller. Home Assistant has the clearest documented AI-agent path; openHAB offers a modular voice stack; Domoticz documents an MCP interface for AI clients.
What counts as an open-source multi-agent smart-home alternative?
Think in two layers. A controller connects devices, exposes their state and runs automations. One or more conversational or autonomous agents sit above it and request information or actions through an integration or API. That distinction matters: an open-source controller can support agent access without supplying an agent supervisor, coordinated planning, or a complete multi-agent system.
The practical choice depends on the devices and radio protocols already in the home, whether control must work without internet access, which model or voice services are acceptable, and how much configuration and maintenance the owner wants to handle. The official documentation reviewed here does not provide like-for-like testing, so it cannot establish a universal winner for performance, privacy, reliability or ease of use.
How do the three platforms differ?
| Platform | Documented route for voice or agents | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Home Assistant | Assist supports local voice and can use LLM integrations. Configurable AI-agent integrations can interact with the home through an API based on Assist intents. Home Assistant Assist documentation; Home Assistant AI-agents announcement. | The clearest documented agent path among these options. Keep exposed devices and permissions narrow; language-model output can be wrong or slow. |
| openHAB | A modular voice assistant combines audio input, keyword detection, speech recognition, interpreter(s), speech synthesis and audio output. LLM-based interpreters can send natural-language requests to external models. openHAB documentation. | Its component-based approach suits people who value composability and technology neutrality. Voice behavior depends on chosen components; the documentation does not establish a built-in multi-agent supervisor. |
| Domoticz | Its documented MCP endpoint lets AI clients discover and control devices and inspect sensor history. Domoticz MCP documentation. | Worth evaluating for an existing Domoticz installation or a direct agent-to-controller connection. The cited documentation does not establish the same conversational voice depth described for Home Assistant or openHAB, nor a full multi-agent framework. |
Can an AI agent control devices?
Home Assistant: agent access through Assist intents
Home Assistant describes Assist as an open voice foundation that can work locally or use large language models for more conversational requests. Its June 7, 2024 announcement for Home Assistant 2024.6 described integrations for Google Gemini, OpenAI ChatGPT and Ollama, among other possibilities, and said custom integrations could provide their own APIs. Those provider references describe that 2024 announcement, not a current model, price or availability comparison.

The announced API was based on Assist intents and intended for device control and information queries, rather than broad administrative actions. Home Assistant cautioned that models can hallucinate and may be slow. Accordingly, expose only the entities an agent needs, require confirmation for consequential actions, and keep safety-critical behavior in deterministic automations rather than relying on generated responses.
openHAB: assemble the voice path you need
openHAB’s voice assistant is a pipeline: audio source, optional keyword spotter, speech-to-text service, interpreter or interpreters, text-to-speech service and audio sink. An LLM-based Human Language Interpreter can send natural-language instructions to an external model and support multi-turn conversation. The result depends on the selected components; an openHAB server can run multiple voice assistants, but only one for a given audio source. See the openHAB documentation for component details.

Domoticz: connect through MCP
Domoticz’s wiki documents an MCP endpoint at /mcp for AI assistants and LLM clients. The described operations include discovering and controlling devices and retrieving sensor history. This is evidence of an agent-access interface, not proof that Domoticz provides autonomous planning or coordinates multiple agents. Check the current MCP documentation for API behavior before building around it.
Can the system run locally?
Home Assistant says Assist can operate locally, while also allowing integrations with LLM services. Whether a particular conversation stays on the home network depends on the selected voice and model components; a local controller alone does not make an external model local. Its 2024 announcement discussed cloud and local model options, but those historical descriptions should not be treated as current provider pricing or a present-day quality comparison.

openHAB states that it runs on user hardware, does not require a cloud service to work, keeps data at home and talks directly to local devices when possible. It also supports cloud-platform integrations. Those are project-stated design characteristics of the platform, not a guarantee that every binding, voice component or LLM provider is local. Review each chosen integration’s network and data requirements in the official documentation.
For any of these controllers, cloud-dependent devices remain dependent on their vendor’s service: Home Assistant’s FAQ warns that an integration relying on a vendor cloud cannot reach the device during an internet outage. An open-source controller cannot make a cloud-only device fully local by itself. Compare device compatibility and offline behavior for the equipment actually installed in the home, not just the controller’s general capabilities.

What hardware do you need?
Home Assistant host options
Home Assistant’s hardware FAQ recommends Home Assistant Green for most people and describes it as a plug-and-play hub with Home Assistant installed. A Raspberry Pi, mini PC, NUC or virtual machine can also be suitable, depending on available equipment and willingness to manage the host. You do not necessarily need to buy a new computer if an appropriate one is already available.
Radio support is a separate consideration from the host. Home Assistant lists Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 for Zigbee, Thread and Matter, and Voice Preview Edition for local voice control. Check the protocols used by existing devices before deciding whether a separate radio adapter is needed.

Home Assistant’s Assist documentation describes ESPHome-based voice satellites using ESP32 microcontrollers and an experimental Linux Voice Assistant project for x64 or ARM64 hardware capable of local audio processing. These are alternatives to a ready-made voice device, but involve different setup and hardware requirements. The same documentation mentions a tutorial price of $13 in its publication or crawl context; that is not a guaranteed current total for parts. See the Assist documentation for the project details.
Quick Recap
How should you choose?
- Start with device compatibility. Verify that the controller supports the devices, integrations and radio protocols in your home.
- Decide what “local” means for your setup. Separate local device control from cloud-backed bindings, speech services and LLM requests; each can have different internet and data requirements.
- Choose the agent boundary. Determine which entities an agent may read or control, and keep consequential or safety-critical actions behind confirmation or ordinary rules.
- Match the voice design to your needs. Home Assistant documents Assist and agent integrations; openHAB requires selecting and configuring pipeline components; Domoticz documents MCP access, not a complete voice stack.
- Account for upkeep. A configurable stack can offer flexibility, but its components, integrations and model connections may need separate setup and maintenance.
- Check the host you already own. For Home Assistant, Green is the project’s recommended ready-to-run option for most people, but a suitable computer, Pi or virtual machine may avoid a new purchase.
