A sewage-like smell from a washing machine can come from a drain hose that is positioned in a way that allows siphoning, or from a problem in the home’s drain plumbing. Washer residue can also cause unpleasant odors, but a true sewage or sulfur smell should not automatically be treated as a cleaning issue.
First, identify where and when the odor is strongest
Notice whether the smell seems to come from inside the drum, the drain-hose connection, or the standpipe where the washer drains. Also note whether it gets stronger while the machine is pumping out water. These clues can help distinguish a washer-residue odor from a possible plumbing source, but they cannot diagnose the cause remotely.

Check the drain hose before cleaning the washer
A hose pushed too far into the standpipe can contribute to siphoning and odor. Samsung describes a sulfur or sewage smell as a possible result of a drain hose inserted too far, and GE also warns that excessive insertion can allow siphoning. If the smell started after the washer was installed or the hose was moved, this is a useful first check.

Follow the installation instructions for your exact washer model to confirm how far the hose should enter and how it should be supported or secured. Do not rely on a single insertion-depth measurement found online: manufacturer guidance varies by model. When the smell points to the home’s plumbing
If a sewage odor persists, is strongest around the standpipe, or occurs alongside drainage trouble, the cause may be in the plumbing rather than the washer. Whirlpool identifies a clogged P-trap, vent pipe, drain, or another plumbing issue as possibilities and recommends professional assessment when a front-load washer smells like sewage after routine troubleshooting. Whirlpool’s guidance on sewage odors discusses these plumbing possibilities.
An empty drain trap can also allow odor to escape; Toshiba’s Japanese-language support advice describes restoring water to the trap as a remedy in that situation. Toshiba’s washer FAQ covers that case. Because the relevant cause and local plumbing requirements can vary, do not install a trap, vent valve, odor adapter, or other plumbing component based only on a washer-smell symptom. Have a plumbing professional inspect the system.

When washer residue or damp laundry is more likely
A musty or general stale odor from the drum can come from detergent or fabric-softener residue, laundry left sitting while damp, or debris in a cleanable pump filter. GE recommends regular tub cleaning to manage soap and fabric-softener residue; Whirlpool also identifies wet laundry and a cleanable pump filter as possible odor contributors.
Use only the cleaning cycle and products authorized in your washer’s manual. A washer cleaner may help with residue-related smells, but it will not fix a faulty trap, vent, or drain. Keep cleaning efforts focused on a washer-residue odor rather than assuming they will resolve a persistent sewage smell.
